In the past years there have been quite a few changes centered around the school building, faculty, curriculum, busses, and equipment. In the 1981 school year the school received funds to build a new swimming pool. Also a new rac-quetball court was built by the tennis courts. During 1983 the school received a new wind generator. The photography class was combined with the Yearbook class. Mrs. Linda Wilson joined the faculty. She instructed 8th and 10th grade English, and Vocational English. In 1985 Mrs. Wilson instructed art in grades K-12 and sponsored the cheerleaders. In 1984 a construction crew enclosed the open square and built a new art room. The library and science labs were enlarged. Mrs. Sally McQuade started a drama club which took the place of Speech II. Mr. Steve Lenz joined the staff. He taught Chemistry, Physics, 8th grade Science, and General Science. He also coached Cross Country and Junior High boys basketball. Janet Fast instructed the grade school choir after Brad Meredith joined the faculty as Junior-Senior High Music Director. The school purchased new busses and more computers. There were five new correcting typewriters purchased for the typing classes. In the 1985-86 school year study halls were added, and activity period and pep club were dropped. Mr. Bob Smyth joined the staff to teach Senior Government and 7th grade Kansas History. He also coached boys basketball and girls and boys tennis. Mrs. Diana Hass taught the 6th grade class replacing Jack Riley. Gayle Randles was employed full time as cook and grade school custodian. This year the school was reclassified from a 2A to a 1A school. These changes along with the cover and division page design brought about the idea of adopting Change as the theme for the 1986 Bluejay. This year two women were elected to the School Board, Leanne Pike and Linda Harden. The School Board met the second Monday of every month to approve programs, athletic dates, and make moneymaking and spending decisions. The Administration enforces the guidelines set by the Board and Mr. Dale Moody, Superintendent for three years, makes sure everything runs smoothly in USD 220. Mr. Garlon Jarnagin accepted a cookie monster cake from the cheerleaders who thanked him for being a friend, not a monster. The presentation was made at a football pep rally. Mr. Jarnagin is Junior and Senior High Principal replacing Mr. Moody three years ago. help to make their job easier. The School Board also decides what teachers to hire, what rules the Administration has to enforce, and many other rules and regulations. Members were Aaron Bates, Doug Inderlied, Billy J. Rich, Charles McKinney, president; Leanne Pike, vice president; and Linda Harden. Not pictured, Harry O. Walker. 2 Administration ALBUM Seniors Participate In Academics, Seniors made many decisions. They had to select classes they should take, choose senior announcements, plan the senior trip; and last but not least, decide on money-making projects. These decisions didn't stop them from having fun, like trying out The Beast and advertising motor oil. Trying to get her homework done, Sharlet Butler cracks a smile as she thinks how nice it will be to finally get her Government done. I promise I'm studying is what Teresa Solorio (left) says from the back of the Government room. % With his innocent look, Joe Smyth (below) acts as if he is trying to hide something from someone. Carri Culver says I can't believe you took my picture! as Mark Tuttle says, Wow! That flash was bright! Clint Chase and Dallas McMurphy show off their new Hot Rod called 'The Beast. 4 Seniors Organizations, Athletics, And School Life Even though seniors have subjects that are required, they can take other subjects that will help them later in life. Brett Bates (below) works on his pickup. Here he is practicing for when he makes it big, advertising Pennzoil Motor Oil. Caught in the line of duty, Mr. Robin Mollhagen uses the bandsaw to cut a piece of wood. Hey, it wasn't me digging in the mud, Dallas McMurphy says with the evidence on his hands. The only senior in Typing I, Shawn Mosshart tries to keep caught up with his work. 8 §eniors Skipping out after classes, Rafe Messer runs for his pickup before anyone catches him. Seniors do what is asked of them most of the time! Some pose, as Sandra Young; some run, as Rafe does; and some, even though most people don't know about it, talk about sneaking around rigging it to get together on Saturday night as Mark Tuttle and Teri Walker are doing. The seniors always had something to keep them busy. Shy Sandra models for the “famed AHS Yearbook photographer. Teri and Mark get caught in one of their “deep discussions between classes. A • « ■ As seniors we finally realize, or more honestly, respect the patience, understanding, and wisdom of our faculty. Most of them have been doing the same job for the Bluejays for many years. Perhaps 'Thank you seems too simplistic for the untold hours they devote to us for extracurricular activities, and most of all for their sincere caring about us as individuals. We are indeed fortunate! Mrs. Beverly York (right) gives a small but noticable smile for the camera. She teaches Home Economics and sponsors Y-Teens, and the junior high pep club. All right, where did my grade book go!” says art teacher Linda Wilson (below). ■ Faculty Mr. Smyth (left) teaches American Government, Seventh Grade History and Geography, senior high P.E., and junior high P.E. Trent Dome Tonya Ediger Clint Daily Shauna Betschart Brad Salyer Shannon Rich Ryan Brunholtz Carrie Stonehouse Danny Heath Elizabeth Fellers Juniors made many decisions throughout the school year from choosing rings to selecting a theme for the junior-senior prom. Moneymaking projects occupied much of the juniors' time: From selling magazines and running the football concession stand (traditional projects) to holding a paper drive and sponsoring family portraits which added a new change to the juniors' funds. Unique changes occurred in the elections of junior class officers this year: Young ladies ruled the class. Shauna Betschart — secretary-treasurer, Elizabeth Fellers — president, Janet Howell — vice president made some important decisions for the class to vote on and carry out. In the spring, students petition the student body for the office of their choice: president, vice president, or secretary-treasurer. They run a campaign, giving preelection speeches at an assembly. An all-school election determines the officers for the following year. For regular members, each club and organization elects one representative, and each class selects two. Stuco members from left front are Rafe Messer (vocal music), Mark Tuttle (senior class), Jana Preisner (senior class), Carrie Travis (freshman class), Brett Bates (A-Club), Kim Mason (elected secretary-treasurer), Joe Smyth (elected president). Dee Reed (vice president and National Honor Society), Karen Isenbart (sophomore class), Frank Long (sponsor), Trent Dome (junior class), Doug Rich (sophomore class), Lance Walker (band), and Chris Gillespie (freshman class). Dee, runnerup in the campaign for Student Council vice president, replaced the winner who did not re-enroll in AHS this year. Stuco officers Kim, Joe, and Dee and Mr. Long went to a League Stuco meeting September 4 to develop better relationships among League members. Out of this meeting came a new League sportsmanship policy. A school is rated and can win a sportsmanship trophy which will be awarded at the League basketball tournament. 28 Student Council Scholars Honored — NHS Membership Members of the National Honor Society are (standing from left) Joe Smyth, Teri Walker, Heather Berryman, Dee Reed, all seniors, and Jane Shreve, sponsor. Newly inducted members (seated) are Shauna Betschart, Dan Heath, Tonya Ediger, Clint Daily, Elizabeth Fellers, and Trent Dome, all juniors. In order for new members to be accepted into NHS, a 3.3 average is required; to stay in, a member must maintain a 3.0 average. President Dee Reed (left) introduced the program by welcoming the guests — friends, family, and faculty members. The November 21 ceremony, held in the library instead of the cafetor-ium as in the past, consisted of the Interpretation of the Four Characteristics of Membership and the presentation of certificates and pins. The officers presented the four characteristics: Vice President Heather, Character ; President Dee, Scholarship ; Secretary Teri, Leadership , and Treasurer Joe, Service. Mr. Garlon Jarnagin, high school principal, assisted sponsor Shreve in presenting the membership certificates and pins to the inductees. After the ceremony, guests and members were served punch and cookies by the officers. Mr. Jarnagin, far left, observed the visiting during refreshment time. M National Honor Society A-Club and Y-Teens did various activities during the year. Money making projects were the main course with the A-Club selling parking places around the football field and selling popcorn during football and basketball games. Their annual service project is to conduct a cystic fibrosis drive. Y-Teens made money by selling cookbooks. They also went to Fountain View Villa to adopt grandparents and during Christmas they went and sang songs and took presents. How much did you change between August 21 — the first day of school — and May 22 — the last day? It's been our joy (and pain) as the staff of the 1986 BLUEJAY to record some of these changes. It's our hope they will become fond memories as the years pass. Staff Completes Record Of Changes Yearbook staff included (upper right) Mark Tuttle, Janet Howell, Rafe Messer, Carrie Stonehouse, Sharlet Butler (second-year member). Shannon Rich, Anna Jean Wilson, Adviser, and Joe Smyth. The Journalism Class joined the Yearbook Class at the beginning of the year to learn film loading and camera techniques. Watching as Mark (center, back to camera) demonstrates how to load 20 frames into a film cassette are Rafe, Shannon, Ms. Wilson, Clint Chase and Ryan Brunholtz — Journalism students — Joe, Janet, and Mr. Leland Neal Hill, Journalism instructor. The task of putting this book together would have been much more difficult without the help of Eldora McMinimy, darkroom; Jostens (Kelly Wright representative) for their advice and patience; Robin Mollhagen and Mrs. Tom Fellers for two pictures on p. 40; Rita Freelove for identifying K-6 panel pictures; and Marquis Studios for some of the large group pictures. Even when working, the yearbook staff loved to play. Shannon and Mark take a lunch break from Yearbook Conference (at Dodge City) September 24. Accompanied by Ms. Wilson (driving), the staff left at 7:30 a.m. and returned at 4 p.m. Cold drinks were consumed on the way home. Right, Joe? 92 Wrap Up
