Secretary To the Class of 1977, Greetings! In year one of century three of these United States of America, it is fitting and proper to reflect on the great heritage bestowed upon us. Reflecting on our heritage. I would like to cite Ecclesiastes 12:1 - Don't let the excitement of being young cause you to forget about your Creator. Honor Him in your youth before the evil years come--when you'll no longer enjoy living. (Living Bible) It is the remembrance of our Creator that has made our country great; it is the remembrance of our Creator that makes individuals great. We are all citizens of the world. The heritage we transmit to posterity will have world wide impact. Plan your wholehearted response to the needs of world society. Now is the time. Are you ready? Yes, I know you are! Go with God. Ashland Is 1A The Fighting Blue Jays football team went all they way to State capturing the 1A State Champions title with an undefeated record 13-0. Ashland's greatest defeats came by defeating the Protection Panthers and the Fowler Goldbugs. The Jays concluded that Fowler and Southwestern Heights were very formable foes. The fighting Jays defeated SWH in a very close and hard fought game. Ashland tangled with Fowler twice during their climb to the top. Ashland's strong defense was the main factor in both contests. The toughest competition the Jays' encountered all year came from within the Iroquois League. District, Regional, Sub-State, and State playoffs was a whole new experience for everyone associated with the team. District playoffs, The Blue Jays tackled the Brewster Bulldogs. Regional playoffs, Ashland tangled with Fowler where the Jays' were scored upon the only time during playoff action. Sub-State action had Ashland up against the Pretty Prairie Bulldogs where the Jays totally dominated the game. Ashland now was on their way to conquer the title of STATE CHAMPS of 1976-77. The big game was held on Saturday against the Olpe Eagles at Olpe in sub-zero degree weather. The Jays' dominated the game with a devestat-ing ground attack. Ashland averaged 3 1 2 yards a play. The only threat to the Jays was an Olpe kick-off return to the ten. Upon the next play, the Eagles threw an intereception. Ashland fans showed lots of spirit and pride for their team during such a horrible day. Ashland fans were appreciated very much by the football team. More fans from Ashland showed up for the state game than from Olpe. Ashland seniors who experienced the capturing of the state title were John Tuttle, John Randall, Greg Gardiner, Phil Messer, Frank Salas, Fred Humphreys, Marc Krier, and Tim Howell. The 100 degree heat during the first practices to the 20 degree below zero on the final game did not keep the young men out for football from their goal of being 1A State Football Champions. Through great team work, dedication, self discipline and a willingness to work hard, for a common cause, the players developed and matured through out the year. Many things were responsible for the best season a Ashland team has ever enjoyed. The players, Coach Hansen, Coach Gilmore, pepclub, cheerleaders, administration, faculty, parents, and all other loyal fans deserve special recognition for a job well done. Keep up the good work throughout your life and you will always be successful. Congratulations Ashland Bluejays. You are number 1. Although we completed our season with a losing record, we didn't come out with a losing attitude as everyone played with winning desire the last two weeks of the season. Many of the year's losses came at key times against good teams with our squad coming out on the short end by a narrow margin. I don't feel bad about the past season because of the way it ended, even though I know we never reached our potential. 1 hope next year's team starts out the season with the same kind of attitude as this year's squad ended theirs with. Coach Hansen 47 Wow, Mark, look at that form! Bottom Row-Tracy Thompson, Melody Stebens, Sara Crane, Susan McPhail, Nacy Krier, Sara Croskell, Top Row Montie Thompson, Debbie Moss, Janet Mull, Crystal Thompson, Becky Sawyer, Kelly Degnan, Becky Dielman, Kim Harmon. After a very slow start-losing their First seven games, the Ashland girls had their first win against Minneola who they had lost earlier in the season in overtime. Finally securing their first win they won their second game in the Meade tournament. The girls showed much improvement in teamwork and shooting skills ending the season with a league standing of 0-7 and an overall standing of 2-13.
