HAROLD McCREIGHT Superintendent PHYLLIS FELLERS Supt. Secretary I salute the members of the Class of 1976. In this Bi-Centennial year of our Nation's history, our attention is repeatedly directed to our heritage and the mul-ti-vared interrelated, religious, educational, cultural, economic historical components which make up our national heritage. We have a great Nation. We are recipients of it's seemingly endless bounty: We are charged with the responsibility to maintain it's natural resources and productivity for future centuries of National developement. I direct your thoughts to your personal religious heritage, I Cor. 6:19--------Ye are not your own-------and I Cor. 7:23 -----Ye are bought with a price; be not therefore servants of men. Who says linemen are slow? 1975 Football The Ashland Fighting Bluejays football team proved to be a top contender in the always tough Iroquois League football race with a second place finish in 1975. The Bluejays finished the season with 7 wins and 2 losses, the best record an Ashland team has accomplished since 1963. Being rated one of the top ten 1-A football teams in the state most of the season, made each player proud to be a part of the large 44 member squad. The record attendence by the Ashland fans received the opportunity to watch the best offensive season Ashland has had in a number of years. The balanced attack saw the Ashland team rushing 360 times for 1708 yards and completing 42 of 97 passes for 936 yards. It was a great privilege to work with such fine young men who throughout the season showed lots of enthusiasm, determination, dedication, the willingness to work hard, a love for the game of football, and demonstrated the mental attitude of true winners . Cross Country became a team sport rather than an individual sport. With only 1 letterman returning from last year, the Bluejay Cross Country team had a very successful year-topped off by Jim Arnspiger placing 1st in the Regional meet. It takes a lot of self-decipline to run day after day with the only reward being a medal or a high team placing at a meet, but all 7 team members possessed this attribute along with a sense of determination and drive. AHS should be proud of this team which placed well in all meets attended. Two letterman will be returning next year, and hopefully AHS again can compete as a team. Freshman Ashland 38 Protection 33 27 Fowler 25 32 Coldwater 13 The 1975-76 edition of Ashland Basketball brought with it one of the most successful seasons the Bluejays have had in recent years. Finishing 3rd in the tough Iraquois League Conference rack, the Bluejays ended the season with a 12-7 record. Throughout the long basketball season, the 76 bluejay squad brought many thrills and moments of season to the many people who once again found that basketball can be exciting. One point wins, last second shots, and come from behind wins, all attested to the fact that the Ashland Bluejay Basketball team was and will be nothing to take lightly. 1976 was a fine season, an excellent group of young men and a spring board to a brighter basketball future. We had two seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, and nine freshman out for the squad. The squad was young and we had a lot to learn. We learned as much as I thought possible and will improve on that next year. We won two games out of eighteen on the varsity level, and five out of eleven on the junior varsity level. I thought we were very competitive in all but a few gamesâbut we will improve much next year for most schools in the league have had a program much longer than ours. I felt we improved on our fundamentals and basic basketball skills about 300-400% as evidenced by closer scores in the games. I was very satisfied and am looking forward to the future in Ashland girls basketball IF the program continues to improve . Coach Gillaspie 46 A-team: G. Goodnight D. McPhail, T. Morrison, T. Highlights of competition included the Ashland Invitational during which the two-man team earn ed second-place medals, and the Protection Invitational, which introduced a new concept into high school golf: the idea of playing nine holes on two different courses (Protection's and Coldwater's) during the same 18-hole tournament. Swinging for the Blue Jay squad this year were two seniors, Gary Brown and Pam Dielman; two Juniors, Bryan McPhail, and Debbie Osborne; sophmore Mike Gilmore; and freshman Scott Malott. Under the direction of L. N. During the year they wrote and edited news stories, news features, editorials, and sports stories. Patrons of the school districts were highly complimentary in regard to the reporters' efforts. Early in the fall A-Club paid the bulk of the price for each game day jersey that was sported by the football squad on Fridays and Mondays. Again this year A-Club voted to veiw a major col ledge football game seeing Kansas vs Missouri at Lawrence in themiddle of November. In the past a weight machine was purchased and this year to encourage more people to work on it T shirts were bought with the amount of weight a person can bench press written on the front. These T shirts range from 200 to 350 lb. jumping at 50 lb. intervals in the 200's and at 25 lb. intervals in the 300's. On March 16th to cap the year off A-Club had its annual public service drive for Cystic Fibrosis. So as you can see A-Club has been a busy and profitable organisation this year. Basketball brought the leadership ability of Kim to its highest peak. A leadership founded not on verbal commands but positive oriented actions. Rounding out his sporting year with tennis, Kim once again demonstrated that playing with pain can be masked for the benefit of others. Year around on the sports field, in the classroom, in the church, or on the street Kim Hulstine was, and is an individual who the coaches, staff and students were proud to be associated with. 110 The Most Inspirational Girl Athlete Melissa Croskell Melissa Croskell became the first recipient of the Most Inspirational Female Athlete Award in 1976. Her active participation in track, tennis and pep club characterized her willingness to accept responsibility and assume a leadership position that although not always popular was nevertheless necessary. The cheerful attitude Melissa brought to all her endeavors was greatly appreciated by both spectator and participants. Inspiration encompasses many aspects including the willingness to be an active spectator, a loyal supporter, and a leader who by action as well as word sets an example which the students, faculty and community can admire. Melissa Croskell is a derserving recipient of this award, the fine example she has set will hopefully serve as a standard for future athletes. Ill âĄMl HI PLAINS FARM EQUIP. INC.
