FOREWORD Nations have recently been led to borrow billions for war; no nation has ever borrowed largely for education. Probably no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization. We must make our choice; we cannot have both. Shaw averaged 12 points per game. There were 9 lettermen this year and 6 will be returning next year. These returning lettermen should add much needed experience to the team. Harold Barb-Coach Iroquois League Champs: Doubles team Bill Shaw and Randy Thompson. MOST SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR AHS The boys tennis team finished the most successful season ever for AHS. They played Fowler, Meade, Greensburg, and Cimarron during the season and won over all but Greensburg. They also participated in five tournaments--Dodge City, Liberal, League, Regional, and State. Bill Shaw was number one man for the AHS squad. Shaw won fifth at the Dodge City Invitational as he won four matches and lost one. Marsh Galloway and Randy Thompson also did well as they won over the Alva, Okla., Hays, and Greensburg teams, but lost to Hutch. The highlight of the season was Bill Shaw and Randy Thompson winning first in the doubles at the league meet and they also won second in the regional which qualified Ashland for the State tournament at Lindsborg. The State tennis tournament at Lindsborg was for 1-A, 2-A, and 3-A schools. Ashland was the only 1-A team in the State to qualify for this tournament, but lost in the first round to Ellsworth (5-7) (7-5) (6-2). 46 GOLF The Ashland Golf Team attended dual meets at Minneola and Meade, Coldwater Invitational, S.W. Heights Invitational, Cimarron Invitational, and League at Cimarron. LEFT TO RIGHT: Bert Helmer, George Krier, Alan Schweitzer, Terry Couch, Tom Hoffman, David Dielman. MESSER MOST INSPIRATIONAL ATHLETE John Messer, senior, was named the most inspirational athlete of the year at the athletic banquet, The Year of Super Blue. To receive the award, an athlete had to be recommended by at least one coach, and receive the majority of the votes cast by all of the AHS coaches. Messer was chosen as all-league defensive halfback, was a statistician for the basketball team, and a competitive half-miler, as well as football cocaptain. Messer is the first recipient of the award sponsored by the Coca Cola Bottling Company. The award is to be given annually. Harold Barb, athletic director (RIGHT), presents the Most Inspirational Athlete award to John Messer during ceremonies at the athletic banquet. 47 GIRLS TENNIS This was the first year for Ashland girls to participate in tennis and they competed in seven matches and won more matches than their opponents in each contest. The team played Fowler, Meade, and Coldwater twice and Southwestern Heights once. The highlight of the season was Floyd and Thompson winning second in the league in doubles. Coach Harold Barb anticipates an even better season next year, with nine girls returning. Pride, Dedication, and the will to win were the three dominant aspects of our track team this season. I can remember very few moments that the members of the team thought of even a chance of being beaten. This is certainly showing the will to win. Team unity was strongly evident this year. The girls were 100% for each other. This has been one of my most enjoyable years because I was working with young people that were not afraid to go beyond the threshhold of pain. I challenge the girls track team of 1972 to attain even greater goals next year. As you know, State Championship for girls will be held next year. Go After It! Congratulation to 15 wonderful girls. Coach Estes TRACK 48 ACTIVITIES FLOYD REIGNS OVER HOMECOMING Janet Floyd was crowned 1970 Homecoming queen by football captain Terry Couch during pre-game coronation ceremonies Friday, Oct. 23. Miss Floyd was selected queen, and Terena Henderson and Sandy Berends were chosen attendants by AHS gridsters from among five senior candidates elected by the student body. Co-captains for the evening were Rob Pike and John Messer. Homecoming activities included a spirit week, ugly foot contest, parade, coronation ceremonies, FB game with Protection, and a postgame dance. The junior class won spirit week honors with their tiedyed shirts, decorations, and refreshments for the faculty. John Ellis, freshman, was declared the ugly foot contest winner from representatives of each class. The afternoon parade included colorful class float competition in which seniors took first place honors, Homecoming finalists, football players and coaches, and the Ashland Blue Jay Marching Band. The Homecoming game with Ashland's rival ended scorelessly, but Ashland fans (and a film) will claim a victory for years to come. Janet Floyd, Homecoming Queen, 1970. Attendants Terena Henderson (LEFT) and Sandy Berends (RIGHT) sport broad smiles as they share the spotlight with Queen Janet Floyd during 1970 Homecoming festivities.
