7 7. Photograph Reaches New Heights—This photograph was taken from an altitude of 475 miles during the Gemini 10 space flight of astronauts John W. Young and Michael Collins in July of 1966. Gibraltar appears in the upper right. 8. Surprised Miss America—Pretty 19-year-old Jan Jayroe, Miss Oklahoma, expresses surprise and happiness in the same gesture upon learning that she was Miss America 1967. 9. Pat and Luci— Mr. and Mrs. Patrick J. Nugent walk down steps of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington on August 6th following the wedding of Nugent and the daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson. 10. Strikeout King Retires— Lefthander Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers announced on November 18th that he was retiring from baseball due to an arthritic elbow. Winner of the Cy Young Award three times, Koufax set an all-time record of 382 strikeouts during the 1965 season. 11. Speaks Up For GOP—Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirk-sen answered President Johnson’s accusations that the GOP is a party of fear by declaring that “the President’s statements actually spell out the most damning self-indictment in modern political history”. 12. White House Pickets—In August, these sign-carrying pickets marched up and down in front of the White House in protest to the probe of their anti-Viet Nam war activities by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. 9 FOREWORD This is Ashland High School 1967, a progressive educational institution preparing students for life, responsibilities and the problems of the world. This school year has echoed with many activities: the excitement of athletic events, the grueling task of meeting deadlines, the turbulence of competition and, most important, the academic challenges. All these facts have combined to make the year enjoyable, meaningful, and memorable. In the 1967 Blue jay Annual, the staff has made an attempt to capture the exhilarating spirits of AHS students and, by doing so, preserve the glorious memories of 1967. ADMINISTRA TION BOARD OF EDUCATION, LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Phyllis Shattuck, Mr. Olis Goodnight, Mr. Henry Gardner, President; M. C. Rankin, D.V. REX GRIFFIN, Superintendent Behind every successful school is a dedicated superintendent and a Board of Education composed of interested community citizens. We have such people in Ashland. Our school board, consisting of six members, and our superintendent, Mr. Griffin, work together to formulate school policies, establish the budget and over-see and evergrowing school system. They do not back away from potential crises and are ever-ready to help a student, parent, or teacher. 2 MR. BERT HITCHCOCK High School Principal MR. ARTHUR HOCH Grade School Principal It goes unsaid that a school system could not be operated without the capable leadership of the principals and their staff. Ashland is no exception. Under the direction of Mr. Hitchcock and Mr. Hoch, assisted by Mrs. Rankin and Mrs. Hulstine, the Ashland schools function like well-precisioned machines. We are proud to have men and women of such quality leading our school. COVERDALE BODY SHOP JOHN COVER DALE MRS. BETTY RANKIN MRS. MAXINE HULSTINE MR. HAROLD S. BARB Commerce, B. Due to an unfortunate accident, however, this was impossible. Barney hasn't quit, though. He has put up a tough fight and has shown the determination and spirit for which he has always been known. Our heartiest congratulations go out to Barney for furthering his education and for attempting to find his place in the 8 world. ANDY McNICKLE, Pres. JOHN STEVENS, V. Pres. LORAINE is the beauty, whose voice brings her fame, We're quite sure that it's Scott who will change her name. JUDY's been our Lady Godiva gal, To more than one, she's been a pal. B is for BIS EL, the girl with red hair, When she's around, all the boys just stare. Now here's a real cute gal, BELINDA by name, She's got the stuff to drive any boy insane. CINDY's our sharp and witty brown-eyed lass, She's been a great addition to our Senior class. D is for DAILY, our casanova supreme, To be a Hay's cowboy is his big dream. LOREN's the guy who's not like his name of GRAVE, He is sure to make some special girl rave. MIKE's our guy who to town he often does go, We wonder, does it have anything to do with Jo? MARY is a very intelligent lass, She was valedictorian of the illustrious Senior class. IRAS, Maggie, or Maggot, it's all the same, To us she is the class's sweet little dame. Our girl from down south, that's our NAOMI, To her Mike is anything but bologna, KAREN's our favorite from Wellington, With her you're sure to have some fun. Some call him RON, others know him as Breezy, But whatever he does, it's sure to be easy. RANDY's the boy that Sherlyn calls, honey, We all know that she's his own private bunny. Our guitar pickin' guy answers to the name of TERRY, It's been fun to be with him, 'cause he's so merry. For nigh on six weeks now, a brace STEVE's been wear-in', But for longer than that, HELEN'S been given Good citizen and Betty Crocker as a name, But we'll remember her as Horrible.. . and it's all the same. ANDY is our runner and president most dear, With Mac at the helm, we were always in fear. CAROL REDGER starred as Mrs. T. Ashington Finch, That she's destined for great things is surely a cinch. DOUG ROBERTS drives a red pick-up and black supersport, We're sure Hays will provide him with lots of girls to court!! FRANK REYNOLDS is that wild and wonderful wooer of Debi, And he has a gas bill to prove his foot is heavy. RITA has failed at her one RINEHART ambition, Which was to enlist Mike as a Senior addition. S is for SMITH, who's so clever in bookkeeping, When he goes to Salina, all the girls will be left weeping. STEVENS is big, brawny, and what a football player, One little secret tho, he's also a girl slayer! That DEN DEN is funny is fact without proof, Cause we all laugh and giggle around old Snaggle-tooth. RICK TREASE has the good looks to be a movie star. Nancy even thinks he's Elvis when he strums the guitar. It wasn't a jail, but a hospital where LONNIE was book-ed, Wedding bells will ring, and it's to Vickie he's hooked. With Bill gone to Hays, JAN gave her spot on the bench, To a blonde Junior, we all call Mike Lynch. W is for WILLIAMS, smiling, friendly, and gay, It looks like he's destined to be always that way! SHARON's one gal we all hate to see leave, Wherever she goes, you may be sure there'll be Steve. JOYCE is our girl whose name will be Ahring, his ring's been on Sharon. 'Cause it's John she'll soon be marrying. FRANK has served faithfully as STUCO president, As a wildcat at KSU he'll be a great resident. 14 “ONE MAD NIGHT” CAST Don Cutter.......... Under the direction of Mrs. Imogene Branch, they presented the comedy, One Mad Night , by James Reach. Don Cutter, an attractive young playwright, and his valet, Wing, are the surprise guests of a doctor, his nurse, and five of the funniest asylum inmates that have ever been portrayed. They were such varied characters as: Mr. Hyde, Lady Macbeth, John Alden, Priscilla, and the crazy but sane Lucille Marcy. The humor is compounded by Don's fiancee, Gertrude Finch of 5th Avenue, New York, her mother, Mrs. T. Ashington Finch, and their colored maid, Depression. While the cats are away, the mice will play. An integral organization in high school, the student council, traditionally strives for school unity. The 1966-67 Council, under the able leadership of President Frank York, exemplified this purpose. Activities sponsored by Stuco ranged from staging all school elections to providing milk for refreshment at the newly established 10-minute morning bjreak. The school enthusiastically received the Yokum-Scragg Play Day. Rivalry prevailed as the Yokums dominated the competition in the nail-pounding, pie-eating, and sack racing events. Two disc jockeys from KEED, Dodge City, entertained at the dance to complete the day. Vice-President Mike Harden and Secretary-Treasurer Mary Ann Urban were kept busy supervising the basketball concessions. Tug of war resulted in the declaration of Sr. 67 as Strongest. The highlight of the varsity basketball team came at the end of the season when they placed third in the District Tourney. THIN The AHS Track Squad was in a rebuilding process this year but was bolstered with the support of a large group of enthusiastic and hard working boys. Increasing hard work was put forth as the team tried to better its records. Under the whistle of coach Tom Gilmore, the squad participated in eight meets. Even though the team did not win any meet trophies, fine individual achievement was seen as two thinclads journeyed to the State Meet in Salina. We wish next year's squad increasing success. Andy McNickle came very close to first £ in the 440 yard dash as he ran the best race of his career in 49. 9. Andy received a well-deserved second place silver medal. Andy deserves a lot of credit for his hard work, sacrifice, spirit in becoming a fine athlete. Andy McNickle and Rick Pike Sophomore Rick Pike did not place in the top six milers at the State Meet, but did a creditable job in the hard mile race. Rick, as he trains next year, will be a tough one to beat. Our congratulations go to these two fine and outstanding track stars of AHS. The AHS Tennis Team, under the coaching of Mr. Harold Barb, competed in five regular matches with league schools this season. In the Iroguois League tourney at Fowler, the double team of Frank York and Dale Coverdale placed fourth. The season was one of rebuilding as it saw only one letterman returning. However much valuable experience was gained by the underclass netmen and next year can be looked upon with much anticipation. The second year for Golf at AHS was eagerly anticipated by Coach Jerry Headrick. The team journeyed to four meets, highlighted by the league tourney at Cimarron. The four man team of Mike Lynch, Frank York, Scott Shattuck, and Greg Pike captured third place for AHS at this League meet. Much experience has been gained and since only one letterman is leaving, the League should beware of these up and coming golfers at AHS.
