FOREWORD This is Ashland High School. Each person who attends our school has a diffet concept of what it means. These concepts come from the ideas we have exchangee the friendships we have made. This year has been filled with unforgettable experiences. The joys, the sorrows, and the hard work are part of the memories we have. Preserved in the 1966 BLUEJAY, in word and pictures, are these memories. The BLUEJAY records 1965-1966 so that future AHS students may know their heritage.; It also records this year so that today's students may remember their high school foundations. Wendell A. McMinimy DEDICATION It is a privilege to dedicate this page to Mr. Wendell McMinimy, who was a member of the Sitka and Ashland school boards for seventeen years. Mr. McMinimy served as treasurer on the Ashland school board and he was a man who was always willing to do whatever he could to better community life. In addition to being an outstanding farmer-stockman, Mr. McMinimy was an active participant in community and church affairs. Mr McMinimy passed away September 21, 1965, but we in Ashland High School realize that we are indebted to him for the fine services he performed for our schools. His worthwhile efforts will be felt for many years in our school system, as students pursue goals of excellence which Mr. McMinimy always upheld. It is with a deep feeling of gratitude and respect that we dedicate this page to Mr. Wendell McMinimy who did so much to further the excellence of education in our school system. 2 A D MINI SIR A TION 1965-1966 Board of Education members meet in the school. Members of this Class of 1966 leave a trail of accomplishments any graduating class would be envious of and any underclass would view as a challenge. Seniors took an active part in all school organizations as well as providing leadership in the various clubs and sports . This senior year was filled with a multitude of activities and responsibilities, which included a Senior Play, Talent Show and Sneak Day in Oklahoma City. The foundation for future years has been laid in the four years of high school life. The future holds different plans for each senior, but each has his dreams and hopes to build on. This year the Seniors have matured to accept a new and challenging role as they build for tomorrow's world. Graduation opens a door for each senior. We hope this door will lead to a bright and successful future for the graduating seniors. GRAHAM CHEV. AND OLDS. the NU-WAY CLEANERS PROFESSIONAL DRV SALES AND SERVICE CLEANING FULLERS ASHLAND. Dinny's dream is to conquer the world, but he himself is foolish, greedy, and lustful. Only after learning that he cannot make a perfect world and still enjoy it, does Dinny give up his dream and learn to live with his own faults. Dawn . . . -Chloe . . . Bubbles . . Benny . . . STUCO LEADS SCHOOL Would you believe Batman? Would you believe Charles Atlas? Would you believe Don Harden, Stuco Pres. ? As the nucleus of AHS, the Student Council aims for better relationships throughout the school. This year, led by President Don Harden, the Stuco ably served the AHS student body. During the year, the active members wrote the Constitution which was accepted by the Student Body. They took care of the concession stand during basketball games. Other activities sponsored by Stuco were a Hootenanny, Gym Party, Homecoming decorations and mum sale. A new annual event which they sponsored was the classes Tug-O-War, which was won by the strong Seniors of 1966. Pres. Harden was helped by Vice-Pres. Kirby Pike and Sec. Iras Humphreys. Principal Bert Hitchcock was Sponsor. FISHERS IGA STORE C.E. STROUSE LOW PRICES EVERYDAY JE WE LER J A ITS Y-TEENS This year the Y-Teens worked hard to complete their projects. One project was the sale of candy. The candy was so good, that even the ants invaded the candy boxes! The busy girls also collected stamps to provide milk for needy children overseas. Y-Teen girls helped members of the YWCA with UN Weekend. Mothers of Y-Teen girls were honored with a Mother-Daughter Brunch in May. This lovely occasion was a fitting climax to an active year in Y-Teens. Miss Myrna O'Neil is the sponsor of this organization . HI-Y OFFICERS: FRONT ROW: 1-r. V. Pres. Virginia Mull, Pres. Jane York, Sec. Kathy Baker; 2ND ROW: Treas. Mary Ann Urban. HI-Y AND Y-TEENS The industrious members of Hi-Y sold popcorn at various athletic events this year. The money from the sale was the source of income for the Hi-Y club. At the meetings, members enjoyed participating in intramural sports, such as volleyball and soccer. These games followed the devotional reading. The annual picnic-softball game was held early in the spring. The highlight of this picnic was the softball game between the Hi-Y boys and the faculty. The sponsors of Hi-Y are Mr. Headrick and Mr. Gilmore. OFFICERS: F. R. 4TH FROM LEFT. Vice P. Don Harden, Pres. Bill Wilson, Treas. Mark Kraft. PEP CLUB The school spirit was boosted by the loyal Jayettes. Led by Louise Redger, President, the Pep Club committees presented pep skits, decorated goal posts, made pep posters and arranged transportation for away games. For money-raising projects, the Jayettes sold Bluejay car stickers and pennants. Hats off to those loyal fans for the good work they have done to boost the spirit of AHS. DEBATE Ten debaters battled their way around the proposition that a program of compulsory arbitration should be adopted in labor management relations. Ashland hosted its first Invitational Tournament. The intellectual debaters also attended tourneys at Medicine Lodge, Meade, and Liberal. Ashland placed third in the Kingman meet. Representing AHS in the District Tournament at Greensburg were Bill Seidel, Don Harden, Jan Washburn, and Iras Humphreys. Loraine Barricklow, Karen Booth, Carol Redger, Teri Swanson. The 50-piece band of AHS had a very successful year under the direction of Mr. Steve Millis. The highlights of the year were the Christmas program, the fall marching season, and the Music Reception in the spring. Of course, contest is the event all musicians look forward to each year. The band received I ratings at League and State Contests. The four ensembles also received high ratings. The band is a very rewarding extracurricular activity and we in AHS are fortunate to have a band department which strives to excel. Leland Van-deveer, Scott Shattuck, Monica McMillion, and Laurel Klinger were the vocal soloists who brought home superior ratings for AHS. Besides the hard work in preparation for contests, the vocal groups participated in the Christmas Program. The Spring Concert was a lovely ending to an active year in the vocal music department. 1966 was an outstanding year for the vocalists in AHS. Coach Jerry Headrick had only two returning lettermen in Mark Kraft and Kirb Pike. Our team and coach are to be congratulated for their fine sportsmanship and effort. They gave every team a battle and in many games the winner was not assured of victory until the last few minutes of the game. Seniors who saw action for AHS this season were Mark Kraft, Melvin Watson, Bill Seidel, Kirb Pike, Bill Wilson. The football team played a schedule of four games with one win against Protection. These young gridsters acquired much valuable experience. Eight games were played during basketball season, in addition to three tournament games. Twenty-three boys came out for basketball with nine going on to high school. These young athletes show promise of contributing to the high school athletic program in the years to come. Football was coached by Mr. Earl Blevins and Mr. Don Crosby. Mr. Paul Fairbank was basketball coach. CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS 1966 YOU HAVE BIG RESPONSIBILITIES AND BIG CAPABILITIES. WE ARE COUNTING ON YOU! MR. AND MRS. RAY L.
