Ashland HiqSchool Jhi4. Book Belonqa ® V Dn YYle.mon.iam MRS. GWENDLYN F. BAKER 1895-1959 Mrs. Baker came to Ashland as teacher of the first grade in 1919 and continued in that position until May 1959. She intended to teach one more year but her illness and death intervened. She was outstanding teacher whose skill in training beginning boys and girls was accepted by all who had any knowledge of her work. She moved among her pupils with dignity and ease and possessed the perfect touch in guiding them through the difficult days of their first year's work. She will be long and fondly remembered as a kind and competent first grade teacher and as a gracious lady. WILLIAM W. WILSON 1893-1959 For a quarter of a century Mr. Wilson was the very competent principal of the Ashland elementary school. His pupils, the patrons and all who knew him regarded him highly as a teacher and as a friend. He was firm but fair. He encouraged high scholastic standards, he was much interested in athletics and all the factors which help boys and girls to grow up to be wholesome and civic minded men and women. He made a very definite contribution to the welfare of the Ashland schools and community. MR. J. E. HUMPHREYS Superintendent Admininttiation The board members meet once a month to conduct the business of the school or to discuss plans for the future school activities. The board takes an active interest in the interviewing and employing of the faculty. They are also concerned with the purchase of equipment for the various departments and in determining the need for repairs to buildings. The board member serves a three-year term, one member being elected each year at the annual school meeting. M . Wendell McMinimy, Treasurer; Mr. Dwight D. The juniors entertained the seniors and faculty at a prom and banquet on April 19 using as their theme Oriental Gardens. The punch table also carried out the oriental theme. The punch bowl was decorated to represent a volcano. On the high auditorium stage was a beautiful waterfall with a mountain scene behind it. On the right side of the stage was a large pagoda house with light shining thru the windows. Each guest sat down to this nicely decorated and arranged place settings. (Above.) 31 A tragedy in the small town of Carson Corners is the focal point of the play. A high school boy is killed in what seems to be an accident; then, five months later the town people are called to high school auditorium to witness a dramatic performance. What happens is the story of the play. 7fie RemankaUle incident at Can on Conner Dr. Caldwell . . Spencer Closson Mrs. Caldwell . . Ruth Ann Betschart Mr. Prince . . Marion Markland Mrs. Prince . When their car breaks down on a country road late one night, they seek shelter at Lame Duck Inn. This is a hotel which has been deserted for several years, ever since a series of murders which had been committed there had given it the reputation of being haunted. Bon on this wild night, a group of oddly-assorted characters converge on the Inn, each for purposes of his own which results in the blending of chills and thrills and rich comedy scenes.
