'Dedication In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Ashland High School, we dedicate our “1956 Bluejay” to Mrs. T. T. Smith (Miss Effie P. Walden,) and Mrs. Sibyl Davidson (Miss Sibyl Vanlaningham), who were the two original members of the first class to graduate from Ashland High School 60 years ago. Mrs. Smith is living in Ashland, and at present is the Register of Deeds of Clark County. It is of interest to know that Mrs. Smith’s grandson, Ted Dorsey, will graduate this year, just 60 years after his grandmother graduated and will be the third generation of her family to graduate from Ashland High School. Mrs. Davidson married shortly after her graduation and moved to Oklahoma. She is now living in Wichita with her sister. She had one son that also graduated from this school. The Senior Class elected Yvonne as their representative in the Annual Queen Contest and then won the honor for her by selling the most annuals. The queen contest was a very close one, ending in a tie between the juniors and seniors on the first deadline date. A new deadline date was set and the contest continued between the juniors and seniors. The seniors really went to work and at the end of the contest held a substantial lead to make Yvonne the Queen. The other queen candidates were Karen Klinger, Carol Stranghorner, and Ann Bowling. YVONNE SMITH KAY HURD Kay Hurd received the honor of being the 1956 Bluejay Princess. The Princess contest was held between the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The grade that sold the most annuals won the honor for their representative . Kay was elected by the seventh grade to represent them and on the deadline date they held a lead over the sixth and eighth grades to give Kay the honor of the Bluejay Princess. The other princess candidates were Peggy Wyatt, and Karen Bowling. THE CLARK COUNTY CLIPPER 3 School (Zaiettdan. Sept. 5 First day of School 10 18 19 Hutchinson State Fair II 23 F. B. The setting was the back room of Mom Madigan’s (Linda Underwood) Malt Shop, which was the meeting place for seniors of Central High. Two great events were taking place, the Thanksgiving Prom and a football game with their rival. Western High. This was the story of Lucy Trainor (Joleen Pendergast), who worked after school at Mom's and of her romance with Cal Henry (Jack Swayze), who was new in school. It was the story of Sheila Rollins (Yvonne Smith) and Julie Cartwright (Merlyn McMinimy), who were rivals in the election of Queen of the Prom, and their campaign managers, Winnie Clark (Muriel Moore) and Elsie Hacker (Maxine Fox). Two other girls who added much to the play were Gert Anderson (Phyllis Sneed) and Ada Short (Billie Gillespie). The football captain, Bing Wilson (Bob Simmons), the young man with an appetite. Pudge Burnett (Barry Randall), and the wit, Monk Stacy (Kenny York) all did their part in making it a success. Other personalities that were very well portrayed were Elwood Simpson (Ted Dorsey); Lucy's mother, Mrs. Trainor (Twilla Markland); the college man, Don Leonard (Roger Greene), and the high school principal. Miss Fanshaw (Mary Robbins). Milo Cook played the part of a freshman and was the prompter. LEFT TO RIGHT: Ann Bowling. Mary Theander, Jon Sawyers. This 3-act comedy was the story of Pam Powers (Annette Dakin) and her pal Marge (Reta Ranabarger), who were both infatuated over the movies. Pam and Marge, in their desire to go to Hollywood, tried to further the romance of their Aunt Phoebe (Mary Theander), who wrote detective stories, and Miguel Alvarado (Jon Sawyers), who was an actor with a Hollywood contract. They completely disregarded the fact that she was in love with the young doctor. Doug Kirkland (Kent Sawyers), but all their maneuvering blew up and all ended happily. It was also the story of Pam's sister, Edwina (Ann Bowling), who was so afraid love would pass her by, she surrounded herself with males. Their father, Edwin Powers (Mike Mawhirter), the maid, Pislam (Juanita Dalton), and Nurse Vanniger (Violet Dickey) did a fine job portraying their characters. Sylvia Ashton (Patty Dorsey), and Edwina's boyfriends, Dexter Carlton (Lennie George) and Jock Marriner (Charles Swayze) also did their share in making the play a success. After the fine performance that evening Mrs. Dakin entertained the play cast with refreshments.
