This includes both sewing and cooking as well as a course in homecraft for boys. Last year an agricultural department was introduced into our school. Offering four different courses, crops and soils, animal husbandry, farm shop, and farm economics, it has proved to be very popular with the city, as well as the country students. This department is taught by Mr. Pedersen. Commercial courses in Ashland High are typing, general business, bookkeeping, commercial law, and shorthand. In- structors in these classes are Mr. Cory, Mrs. Berard, and Mr. Pas. The art department is under the direction of Miss Lauson, while Mrs. Durocher is the instructor in eighth grade art. This year students spent much of their time on pottery making. They also made posters, soap-carvings, and other works of art. Cver one-third of the students in Ashland High belong to some branch of the music department, which includes the bands, the choir, orchestra, and the glee clubs. Band was first made a subject two years ago, and this year orchestra and choir were added to the regular curriculum. Nliss Cool directs the vocal music, while Mr. Mesang is the instrumental instructor. The library acts as a center for almost all of the work in our school. Taught by Mrs. Staley, librarian, a library methods course is required of all freshmen. The course is taken one se- mester, and in addition each student must help in actual library work for one week during his freshman year. All the girls of the school are required to take part in our physical education program. Various body-building exercises and games are offered under the direction of Miss Leppla. A course in first aid-was carried on in connection with the gym classes. The boys' gym classes are taught by Mr. Weikal. Active games of all kinds occupy the class periods and every one of the three hundred first-aid. boys taking part has received instruction in 9'--'lv' Is it just before exams, or are they avid book lovers? r Miss Bishoff explains all in the art of culinary perfection. It's called the Service Club. You see, our aim is to have a high school that is kept in order. To achieve this purpose we must have students to enforce certain rules. Gur club was just organized this year. We started out with about forty students, all willing to pitch in and help. Do you think you would like to join our club? It meets every Friday, activity period. I should like very much to join your clubg but first, tell me what was accomplished this year. i'To begin with, we started a monitor system. Monitors were stationed in the basement, and on the first and second floors. Now when a student wishes to go to his locker he signs his name, locker number, and the period. On the first floor, directly opposite the entry, we have a desk, generally referred to as the Information Desk. A large Information sign has been placed on the desk, and whenever a person wishes informa- tion he is given exact directions. At the basketball games we dis- covered a large percentage of people had trouble finding seats. We started an usher system which has worked very well. At the foot- ball games students gave out programs and ushered. Some worked at the concession stand. Others worked in various other ways. They typed for the Red Cross, helped the librarian, sold tickets at the Homecoming dance, made posters, took down old signs and posters, and some were on a committee which helped pick out the assembly programs for next year. All these things proved very interesting and all the students received points for their work. l'm sure you would enjoy it, too, g You can count on me! However. despite the lack of experience and polish, the Ashlanders enjoyed a thrill-packed season, climaxed with victories over fighting Wakeheld and Superior East elevens. During the entire season, the team was characterized by its raw courage and sincere determination to improve as the season pro- gressed. Caining experience from the Hurley and Chippewa set- backs, Ashland blotted a Wakefield Homecoming celebration with a rousing 1.1-o victory for the Wisconsiners. Then, after losing two heartbreakers to the Superior Central Vikings and the Ironwood Red Devils, the Purgolders romped over Superior East in a thrill- ing Dads' Night victory staged on the locals' athletic field. The seniors, donning the colors of AHS for the last time, wound up their football careers in a blaze of glory when they battled the unbeaten Speed Boys of Bessemer to a standstill in the seasons Final. Truly this was a red-blooded team, unquestioned for courage and sportsmanship. November found the cage squad eagerly whipping itself into shape to face one of its most challenging schedules in Purgold history. The appearance of many new faces was witnessed by local fans as eight of last years first ten had been lost via the graduation route. The opener against the highly touted Bessemer Speed Boys keynoted the type of hghting play the Ashlanders were to witness. lt was dehnitely to be a season for which either victory or defeat was unpredictable until the Hnal gun had sounded. Everyone is proud of the band, and why not? What would a foot- ball game be without the high- stepping band presenting its maneuvers, or a basketball game without the pep band to furnish that necessary spark for victory? The band is also doing its part to Keep em Flying. Pro- ceeds from its annual winter concert were donated to the fund for supplying the U. S. Army Air Corps with a Badger Bomber. The feature number of this concert was Liszt's Second Hungarian Rhapsody, a selection seldom at- tempted by a high school band.
