Who takes care of it? Well, at other schools, decided to give thefstudents the benefit the beginning of the year each advisory group elects of co-operative investment. Before this, the cost of a regular representative and a substitute representa- all activities was two and three times as much, per tive to take care of the Activity money and tickets of student investing, as it is today. The reason is obvious. their particular group. The duty of collecting ten cents On the Activity Ticket basis many more students each week from twenty-five to thirtystudents, and at can afford the small charge of ten cents per week, the same time keeping the records perfectly straight, and, therefore, with larger numbers helping to defray sometimes becomes a very tedious and nerve-wrecking the total expense of activities, the administrators job. Great credit is due the students pictured above and have found it possible to keep the charge down to their adviser, Mr. Ragaz, for the efncient and thorough this small amount which they decided upon two years way in which they handled the Activity Ticket fund ago when they made their estimations. during the past year. I-le proved his ability by turning out a golden avalanche almost overnight. In their first encounter the Ashland greenies were defeated by a fast and hard-hitting Duluth Cathedral team, which was also using the MT formation. However, the Purgolders sprang right back into the win when they over- whelmed Chippewa Falls a week later. On October 4, under a warm and starry autumn sky, the Ashland players see-sawed back and forth with their VVakef1eld opponents until, with only a few minutes to play, Ashland ran over the goal line after intercepting one of Wake- fields trying touchdown passes. The Homecoming' game with Superior Central ended in victory for Superior. The next game was with the Red Devils of Ironwood, who really raised havoc with the Purgolders. Shortly after Ashland travelled to Superior, where it lost by a small margin to the machine-like playing of East. The seniors donned their golden suits for the last time to play a hard-fought game with the Speed Boys of Bessemer. The smoke of battle settled on the only tie game of the season, and on the exit of some of the most Blu?-kfleg dauntless and loyal seniors ever to play football for A.H.S. agam wh GQXDS do xwl W fl. The game was a nip-and-tuck affair, with the Midgets winning 1.3-zo. A week later the Ashlanders enjoyed a 38-15 win over their less ,experienced Park Falls opponents, The rest of the Purgold season was generally poor from the standpoint of scores, but spectators heartily agree that the season was unusually full of thrills and tense moments. The sturdy valiant spirit exhibited by the Ash- landers in the first two games only increased with each additional failure to chalk up a victory, and on Nlarch 5 they were baptized Umiracle team as they extricated themselves from the lowest spot in the conference standings to give the fans the most pre- cedent-shattering incident in local basketball history. At the end of this first round of the tournament the score was 47-23, with the Purgolds holding a 7.4-point edge on their Drummond opponents. The Ashland score represented the greatest offensive regional tournament display since the inception of the classic here in 1937, and the 24-point margin was one of the greatest tournament advantages chalked up during this same time. The new-found spark that worked so effectively against Drum- mond was again in evidence two nights later when the Ashlanders upset Hurley 39-7.8. And so, although Superior East convincing- ly laid claim to the championship title the following night, it may truly be said that the Purgolds wound up in a blaze of glory. 0 you Aghlandy ff II7 C fi..U4l Hume is ' -'Joy 1Q,eVl elk aye '-----uuuuupv-u-nvfv xx? -'1 . , , as :,.
