As the game went on the team seemed to play better and threatened to score many times. September 29-Traveling far, the Weikalmen invaded Chippewa Falls only to be defeated by a score of 2O'O. Chippewa ran rough shod over the Ashlanders throughout the game. October 6-Under the broiling sun, the Purgolders played Superior Central on the Centralites' field. The game ended with a scoreless tie. This was one of the warmest days and hottest games of the season. October 12-The Ashlanders finally got the itch for victory and defeated Hurley 14-0. Whee! This made Ashland Highs homecoming complete. October zc-Playing Ironwood there on a sort of cool night, the Purgolders simply couldn't warm up to a victory and were defeated 21-o. October 2711-he Purgolders played their best game against East. Sheik and his left-hand push shots were greatly missed during the tournament. FRANK 'JOZZYH JOCEWICZ-He was the fastest man on the squad. He was noted for his hard, consistent type of ball as well as for his speed. He will be remembered as a hero who exhibited a one-hand push shot to win an almost lost game during the Ashland-Depadua game. BOB 'MINKH SIEREN-Bob's act included dribbling and tantalizing the opposing forwards. He was not only the main cog in the Purgolders' offensive thrust but also a steadying influence at those times when most players tend to excite their teammates. His hard cooperative work and his fine type of ball handling will be remembered by Purgold fans for years to come. JOHN HKELH KELLY-Our star forward was named on the all-tournament team because of his splendid performance. Kel's shoot- ing decided several ball games in the closing minutes. ORRIN RED N1ARX-Captain. The tall red- head could always be counted on for several points, whether it was a nip and tuck affair or otherwise. 'iRed nearlv reached perfection in shooting free throws and it will be a real problem to fill his place next year. S . HARLEY SPORT BASSFORD-ln the opening of the basketball season Sport proved to be a valuable substitute. He ended the season as a member of the A squad, with a stellar performance during the tournament. Sports ability to get pos- session of the ball off the opponents' backboard was a real asset to the team. He has another year and will no doubt reach a peak in athletics. jOHX MOH! JOHNNY Y DROLSQN-johnny probably showed the most improvement of anyone on the team. He displayed exceptional fighting spirit and stood out as a very aggressive player. His greatest contribution to the team was his hard driving toward the basket. Next year he should reach the heights as a mainstay on the Purgold team. LENERTZ RUB ERNST- Playing his Hrst year on the squad, i'Rub performed nobly throughout the season. He was of great as- sistance in winning our first game over Depadua. He continually made baskets at the opportune time. Rub should prove a valuable man on next years team. SATXI HSLINIH ARXISTRONC--Because of his eagerness to play ball and his willing attitude, Sam should be a player who will have to be closely guarded next year. Sam gave us a sample of what he could do in the liau Claire game. Sams achievements in basketball are due to his stellar work under the basket and his ability to tap in difhcult loose balls.
