The Sophomore Class entered into the activities at the beginning ot the school year and really had that ole school spirit' all the way through. They are proud ot their unusually large number ot students who place themselves on the honor roll each term. Many times the sophomores led the juniors and seniors in honor roll members. Claire Church, a member ot this class, served as Editor ot the 'lGazette the second semester. Eddie Holmes, Rives Jones, Leonard Blanton and Willard Bayes played on the football team. This class also boasted ot a regular torward on the basketball team, Jeep Clark. Other basketball participants were Kenneth McClanahan, Jack Wilburn, Jim Highley, and Bob Smith. Many of the clubs actively supported this worthwhile project and many gift boxes were prepared in this manner. The Girls Service Club helped by lcnitting 35 pairs of bed socks and the Home Economics Club made 25 pairs of slippers. Virginia Clarke and Hester Lambert were in charge of arranging these boxes. Miss Dorothy Hamilton exchange teacher from Kings Lynn England was guest spealcer on this club s first meeting of the year. She talked on Girls Clubs in England' and it was greatly enjoyed particularly by the girls. An outstanding meeting of the year was the Christmas program given in assembly. Frank Gillum was very jolly in the role of Santa Claus and gifts were presented to many of the students at that time. Christmas carols led by Mrs. Ruth Justice, were sung by the student body. At Thanksgiving and Christmas baslcets were filled for the poor and distributed by the Junior Red Cross members. This organization has the largest membership of any in the Ashland High School. Its projects are all worthwhile and helpful ones. Under the capable direction of Miss Dorothy Womack who succeeded Miss Margaret Roser this ciub has enjoyed a successful year. The members paid dues when they became members of the Junior Red Cross and from this the club contributed 534.40 to the Boyd County Chapter of the Red Cross. Urban. M. Urban. Pond, Harper, Covington, Mosscr. Last year's majorettes ot Ashland Senior l-ligh School were one ot the most outstanding groups we have ever had. After much practice they entertained the many spectators who attended the Tomcat tootball games and they really surpassed most ot the visiting majorettes. The girls performed many original teats such as the Indian Dance given on Thanksgiving Day. They termed a circle which represented a tepee and they danced out giving the traditional Indian cry while they encircled a bontire The majorettes also took part in many ot the parades down town, marching in tront ot the A. H. S. Band and twirling their batons. During last year these eight girls received new white unitorms trimmed in gold. This added very much to their appearance and also to our band's On Band Day they helped sell band tags in the downtown district. They worked hard to help the band reach their goal. The maiorettes were: Seniors: Lucy Covington: Juniors: Tudy Harper. Suzie Perry, June Conn, Jerry Pond. and Marianne Urban: Sophomores: Delores Urban and Wilma Mosser. These girls were chosen atter they had tried out and had been approved by a group ot band students and the band director. Now, more than ever. competition in bands, drum majors and majorettes is exhibited on the ball tield as well as on the athletic teams. The Ashland Senior High students and patrons were proud ot their representatives in the past and are assured ot recognition in the future. 81 , H pm ., ' . if 6 TALENT AND FUN FDR OUR ENJOYME Y Cuffs Chews 5.1, -it 'Z 'g't: Z, 5' Sv,-, ALL-- a Pzssvas Muay Page' Lit-fe Va- ci If ss L, ce': D, Ee Vixs Es- f. ff G.
