Through her sincere effort and dedication both in the classroom and on the sidelines, she has shown that teaching does not merely end with the bell. Thus, it is with deep appreciation that we, the Class of 1963, dedicate our Guide to Mrs. PHYLLIS SANDERS. fwffaf afffzflafw flaaam page 10 page 20 page 44 page 64 page 114 .J 522 S' Q E 2 Q 1. AMSTUTZ Biology A new building is constructed upon a founda- tion laid early in the life of the edifice. Through- out the completion of the building program the structure is heightened, using this foundation as a base. The strength of the structure depends to a very great extent upon the strength of the founda- tion. If the foundation is cracked and faulty in workmanship, the entire building suffers and is in danger of collapsing. So it is with an education. The foundation of an education is laid early in the life of a student-through his high school years- so that his later life and higher education may be built upon a firm support. Just as the foundation of a building must be strong and complete, so must an educational foundation be complete and free from fault-capable of supporting the build- ing blocks of the future. We entrust the laying of our educational foundation to the hands of these able workmen .... the E l KAY WM. DICKERSON W. G. DALLAS Distributive Education 15 Speech V . - 9-7 L.. The exceptional acting talents of the high school performers were well blended with the superb orchestrations, un- der the leadership of Dr. Louis E. Pete. South Pacific was well suited to the diverse and varied talents of the students and portrayed every conceivable mood and atmosphere. This mood changed often from the humorous, as exempli- fied by the rousing Bloody Mary, to the sad and sentimental strains of Some Enchanted Eve- ning. The social highlight of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom, was again a smashing success. Much work was done by the present Senior Class to make the theme, Spanish Sercnadaf' very interesting and beautiful. The use of a Spanish hacienda, with a lily pond and moun- tain stream, produced the desired effect in an intriguing manner. Acting as emcees were Jim Oblinger and Rob Kopp. The music for this gala affair was ably provided by Strine's Orchestra, which was capable of both the nec- essary Spanish music and the traditional dance music. As has often been the case, the Spring Follies provided the most extravagant and extensive showcase for the talents of the band's mem- bers. The stage band also participated in such varied events as the Ashland County Safety Council Awards Ban- quet, the Balloon Festival Pageant, the annual Parent Teacher Association's Open House, the Republican political rally, and the Spring Concert. VARSITY FUUTBALL Led by the inspiration of Coach Lloyd Dunne, the ball handling of senior quarterback Mike Humrich- ouser, and the hard running of senior fullback Bruce Cooper and junior halfback Jim Minnich, the 1962 Arrow varsity compiled a 4-5 record. This is an indi- cation of bigger and better things to come. Highlight of the varsity season was a tie for the Championship of the Cardinal Conference. The Ar- rows finished conference competition with a 2-l record, posting wins over Madison and Dover, but dropping a decision to Wooster. The play this year was dominated by the tremendous spirit and drive of both the offensive and defensive teams. There was no sign of quitting or lack of desire on the part of any team member. Those receiving All-Conference recognition were: Bruce Cooper, fullback, Bob Slack, end, Dan Miller, tackle, Jim Minnich, halfbackg Jim Long, tackle, Ray Leonard, defensive halfbackg and Rod Moore, safety. ,Wr- :lf F ffl:lf'w We ! -:ee-L, r 'l ff'-15ui i'l Q Miller, V. CROSS COUNTRY Winning doesn't come by chance. You have to work for it. These boys did! With this statement Coach Doug Diercks summed up the 1962 Arrow Cross Coun- try team. It was a team which showed steady improve- ment throughout the season and came up with the abil- ity to win the big ones. The harriers finished the season with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses in dual competition. They also placed first in the Marion District meet. Highlight of the cam- paign was a 9th place finish in the state meet at Colum- bus. Both of these conquests will provide welcome addi- tions to A.S.H.S.'s new trophy case. Pacing the team this year was the fine running of junior Dale Stimpert. Dale was undefeated in dual com- petition and placed a fine 9th at the state. Returning next year along with Dale, will be a fine nucleus upon which to build an even stronger team. Downer, R. Miller, M. Davis, E. Repp, G. Jarrell, T. Gibbons D. Metcalf. Row 3: D. Heter, D. There were, however, dehnite signs of improvement during the course of the year and the team did very well in the last four matches. Easily the high point of the season was the showing of Steve Doerrer. This rugged senior battled through twelve consecutive matches undefeated, placed first in the district, and entered state competition. Stu Ferguson also placed first in the district and com- peted in the state. Bottgmg up! Celler trying for a takedown. 121 Wi F533 p 7 l Q Row 1: D. Stimpert, R. Power, B. Stefan, M. Mr. Sam Marchio Head Couch BASKETBALL L Mr. Hugh Zimmer Assistant Coach The final record of the 1963 edition of Ashland Senior High Basketball Arrows reads a disappointing eight wins and ten losses. Yet, this final standing is not indicative of the team which Ashland produced. Twelve games were decided by a margin of live points or less, showing that this was a team which would hang on and iight to the end. It was a team which was capable of playing an inspired brand of basketball at a given time. This statement is evidenced by the fine showings at Elyria and Marion, both perennial basketball powers. In Sam Marchio's second year as coach, the Arrows finished in a first-place tie in the Cardinal Conference with losses only to Madison and Wooster marring their record. Jim Bear led' the scorers with an average of 13.6 points per game. He hit a high of 29 points against New Philadelphia. He also led the team in rebounding, ably assisted by Larry Seidner and Jim Springer. u lk I 1 n ' 3 1 - Q' . -ff ' ,P 1 L- 5 tx 1 Jim Bear Z , -Y 1, Jim Springer Bruce Stefan ASHLAND OPPONENTS 5 8 Mt. SWIMMING On Ashland Senior High's second year of inter- scholastic swimming competition, the team posted a rather disappointing won-lost record. It did, however, show great improvement toward the end of the season. The year was marked by many fine individual performances. The highlight of these was the performance of Pej Johnson. This Coach Larry Jones l DHHS 7l,1iH.,.i ' 4 senior placed second in district competition and K then placed seventh in the state in the 100 yard butterfly competition. To cap this fine showing the team, com- posed of Rich McConaghy, Bob Miller, Jim Nordstrom, and Dave Deever, then proceeded to the Ohio State University Golf Course where they walked off with the state championship. Jim Nordstrom, who compiled the lowest average of these top four golfers, will be back again this year, along with Dave Deever. BASEBALL Coach Bud Plank's diamond crew is facing the 1963 season with an inexperienced team. There are few re- turning lettermen, thus Coach Plank will be forced to rely heavily on underclassmen. The baseball Arrows will have to fill a lacking pitch- ing rotation and come up with a few consistent hitters. The squad is characterized, however, by hustle and determination, and hopes are high for a successful ,Ro season. X33 4. N Coach Doug Diercks The track squad under the leadership of Coach Doug Diercks, is looking forward to a very successful season. The loss of Paul Wertz will be deeply felt in the dis- tance events, but Dale Stimpert has tremendougy im- proved in the past few years and should till the gap very well. The field events should also be a strong point for the A's with Ray Johnson bearing the brunt. The team this year has a large aggregation of under- classmen which should insure track successes for years to come. 130 Row I: R. Plank, N. Scott, D. Ihrig, D. Hart. Row 2: J. Kroll, ler, M. These statistics are not, however, completely explanatory of the caliber of play exhib- ited by the team members. Jack Hart- man, back again this year, was runner up in district competition. Last year's squad was coached by Bob Espenschied. This year, however, the boys will be coached by Sam Marchio. gre. as ag . ,,,,4 QQ a '?flT'BTEEU' ffl Qi Q V ..
