Throughout his ten years at Ashland High School, he has stimulated teamwork not only in his coaching but in his classroom. With discrimination, wise iudgment, and cheerfulness, he has extended a helping hand to many students. Win or lose, he gives mature and timely advice to players and the student body alike in a quiet and unassuming manner. Among his many accomplishments, he has been influential in promoting the long awaited dream, an inter-school league. With gratefulness for having had the opportunity to come under the influ- ence of this teacher, coach, and friend, we hereby dedicate this book to Mr. George Valentine. ,.s.'.f?,, , 5. . il 4 I ' A ' A ..' Our happiest and most memorable times at school revolve around our friends and class- mates, ln classes we share the same hard tests, funny experiences, or boring lectures. Between classes and at noon we each have our own routine pattern of walking or eating with certain friends. We all hold memories of great fun, diligent work, and carefree relaxa- tion. In the future when we will look back upon this school year, we will fondly associate our experiences with the companionship of our friends. Arry's Place is our favorite center for mutual relaxation A remote spot provides relaxing escape from the demanding school day. There is na solitude like an eighth period. Being alone is conducive to concentration and learning. ln our pressing school life there are times when we want to be alone to relax or think. Our minds are laden with our social and per- sonal responsibilitiesg we need, and deserve, o few undemanding moments to sort out our thoughts and maybe dream a little. Pre-game enthusiasm is aroused at cleverly planned pep rallies. EIXITHUSIASM The competitive element is ever present in our lives, and we must be ready and alive to the challenges which compe- tition affords. The vigorous individual or organization is the one who will benefit from the vital training engendered by this enthusiastic spirit. We feel that at Ashland High School one has the opportunity to learn the meaning ot this neces- sary by-product of education. We should take with us the fruits ofa formal education and hold firmly to the values ob- tained through enthusiastic competition. An exciting moment stimulates sheer ecstasy. 'kan , wt. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY The junior class play, Papa Was a Preacher, initiated this year's iuniors into the art of the theater. Presented November 20, the three-oct comedy dealt with the family of a West Texas couple who were being remarried in order to celebrate their 25th anniversary. The play's humor was derived from the contrast between the tolerant preacher, his wife, his very typical boisterous teen-agers, and the community's ideas as to how a preacher's children should conduct themselves. SENIOR CLASS PLAY This year the Seniors of Ashland High School presented C. B. Gilford's Bull in a China Shop. This comic-mystery cen- ters around the lives of several old maids who murder each other in an attempt to gain the attentions of their neighbor, Detective Dennis O'Finn. ln the end O'Finn transfers to Arson Squad and the ladies start to burn down their boarding house. Allegro On February 26 and 27 Ashland High School presented the serious and delightfully pleasing musical comedy, Allegro. This production, with the aid of unique lighting and staging, portrayed the conflict in an individual's mind as whether his aim in lite is to help mankind or simply to have money and high position. This unusual plot, coupled with the use of a Greek chorus and symbolic dancing, made Allegro one ot the most entertaining and memorable events of the past year. Joseph and Jennie are married. LEARNING The Guidance counselors help us to learn about various careers. Long hours are spent at the library in research. Ashland High School . . . a secondary institution of learning. No matter what activity of ours may tempo- rarily put it out ot the limelight, or what responsibility may take precedence over it, education is the ultimate purpose of our School. As Freshmen we enter A.H.S. with fundamental background knowledge. As Seniors we depart from our four years of learning with an ad- vanced degree of intelligence. We have lost many of the cold facts, but we have matured our minds and learned to want to learn. We are prepared for our futures. What more could we want for tree? Four years introduces myriads of books and millions of facts. im' PLANNING Planning of the decorations left us our fondest memories of the 1959 Prom, The Deep South. ln the game of chess more time is put into forethought than in the actual move. Likewise more time is spent in preparation ot our activities than the activity itselt takes. Each of us is constantly spending long hours planning our work, preparing our plans, and anticipating success ot our proiects. Our tin- ished product is always appreciated more by us because, even though others don't know the hard work it has meant, we are well aware of it. The satisfaction and pleasure ot success make our hard work worthwhile. Planning and discussion are required to determine partmental policies. Success is the reward for long and tedious rehearsals. 13 i w L h .-:' Q H Q ,,,ff?e3'Q5:?ef ff, A ,. . Ky' ... For want of an explanation of our continued interest in high school life, most students would name the enjoyable, happy times they have. A good mood, our favorite feeling, is everyone's desire. In addition, several members worked in the concession stand during the varsity foot- ball games. The six girls, whose captain is Millie Strine, assisted the Varsity Cheerleaders in planning pep rallies, showcase displays, and the Kick- Olf Ball. Advisor of the group was Amanda Rankin. Various new cheers, including the Mr. Dillon chant, sparked the routines of the six varsity cheerleaders. The girls traveled to a cheer-leading clinic at Bowling Green State University and there learned many cheers which they introduced throughout the football and basketball seasons. The girls made the trip to cheer at Culver and at the Holiday Basketball Tournament in Defiance. They further promoted school spirit by planning pep rallies and eye-catching show-case displays. A season of progress was Head Coach John Hogan's description of the 1959 football season. Though a 4-5 record is not singularly impressive, three Arrow losses were to teams of top rank in the Buckeye State. In spite of this, Ashland's 189 point output and 2064 total yards gained were the best since 1952. Two-platoon football was played for the first time at Ash- land High School. The offensive unit, or Go-team, and the separate defensive team, dubbed the Terrible Turks, who made their debut against Mansfield Madison, battled their opponents for a most impressive over-all record. The one-two punch ot Dave Wait and Dick Dauch pro- pelled the Arrows' offense, with Wait connecting on 32 out of 67 pass attempts and Dauch carrying the ball 853 yards for a record T14 points. The two defeats, handed by Marion and Attica, did not mar the fact that this years' harriers compiled the best cross-country record in the history of Ashland High School. Coach Douglas Diercks, who handled the squad for his first time this year, attributed the success of the season to the performances of the several veterans and the solid backing of newcomers. In addition to an impressive team record, two members of the squad, Dale Hartney and Gary Drushel, qualified for competition in the state meet. Hartney finished seventeenth and Drushel twenty-eighth. Senior Dave Wait, who finished his third year with the varsity, led the scoring with 448 points and a 22.4 average per game. With a total of 932 points made in his varsity basketball career, Wait was the fourth highest scorer in this high school's history. Leading in rebounding was Ken Oxenrider, who copped 324 rebounds for a l6.2 average. The Big Ox ranks as fourth-place rebounder in the annals of Ashland High School. He was also in second place for scoring this year, with 272 points. Third in scoring was senior Gaylord Meininger, with 264 points and a 13.2 game average. Dick Hunter, the fourth senior on the squad, tallied 2l8 markers for a ll.l average. The only iunior to start on the varsity was Bob Sweet. He was second in rebounding with a l4.6 average, and scored 222 points. Midway in the season, the Arrows' ten-game winning streak was snapped by the Lorain Steelers. Wooster and Elyria then moved in to trounce the Arrow cagers. Mansfield Senior af- forded the attack that knocked the Arrows from the Marion Sectional Tournament. Of these four losses, none were by more than five points. Hunter drives for o Icy up. , fi ': , ' ni' ' ,' ,,,' . .A X 1 XX ' ' . Q I , 'H .vl.-- ' : .
