KLLOYD Mll.l.liR In an organization where teachers predominate it is not unusual to select one as a dedicatee. The students are in close contact with them, their courses and activities are clearly defined, and they are associated with their respective subjects. This year we have deviated from the norm and have selected a person who is more or less in the background of the school picture. But without the efforts of Mr. Gloyd Miller, the school could not possibly function. His activities are varied, and in many instances the students are unaware of the duties of a school engineer, Aside from his primary duties of keeping the school heated, clean, and in repair, there are so many small tasks he performs that we can't begin to enumerate them here. During our past six years in this building, Mr. Miller has been of great service to us. We remember him chiefly for his help and consideration during our musi- cals, plays, concerts, games, and club meetings. His is truly a never-ending job. 'I'he Senior Class of I959 will long remember Mr. Miller, school engineer, doer ol' countless little deeds, and friend to all students. 2 FACULTY SEN IORS CLASSES ACTIVITIES SPORTS Page 9 P g 17 P g 43 Page 67 Page 111 L,-',...f L- 'sr' I ,iff Ce, -5 fi! :1 A A X 98 Tx if Dv J V I gf? It has earned the position of a fore- most leader for community good. This has resulted from the work of fine teachers, administrators, staff members, and students sup- ported by an actively interested school community. Ashland High School has been carried forward along its many curricular and co-curricular avenues in its role of community ben- efactor by the efforts and achievements of the class of l959. For these constructive works our thanks are due and given in full measure. Understanding man's position and potentialities in the world today, and looking ahead to new horizons, are intrinsic in the educational program at Ashland High School. The learning experiences are aimed at helping students to develop ability to go forward with assurance to meet the new challenges, to solve the new problems, and to enjoy the rewards of living in an enlightened social order which evolves from the constructive elforts of its members. This in essence is the American Way in education, which permeates the educational climate of Ashland High School. James R. To Mr. Bingham, a S C with a dedica- tion for their job to match his own. To Mr. Espenschied, the balcony of the auditorium in which to hold his future refresher math courses in the hope that this will alleviate crowded conditions in his present room. To Mr. Nagy, congratulations on the '59 Guide, and consolations for the next. To Mr. Tallman, mink-trimmed crying towels and a gift certificate for washing them weekly at Welch's Do-It-Yourself Laundry. To Doc, we leave two familiar words- Hail Columbial We leave to Miss Campbell a conveyor belt running from her desk to the pen- cil sharpener and a year's supply of un- sharpened pencils so she will have something to do when she gets there. To Mr. McDowell we leave the per- fumed atomizer in the Ladies Room at the Dairy in the hopes that it will re- move some of the pungent odors caused by chemicals in his room. To Miss Faust, we leave the junior class hoping that she may teach them the ability to think as she has tried to teach the '59ers. To Mr. Tilton, we leave a life-size air- plane to be placed in his room as a tremendous teaching aid. To Mrs. Plank, we leave many more years of promoting school spirit and activities throughout the student body. To Miss Smith and Mr. Paxton, we leave a long-needed blood-hound to help them track down their wandering children. TO INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS: We leave Gary Stoufer's legs to Dick Dauch in hope that he will make fre- quent trips over the gridiron goal line. We leave our best wishes to anyone who can surpass Frankie Campbell's lines. We leave Sue Ogle's sparkling smile and warm personality to all those wish- ing the secret of popularity. We leave Ace Moffett's trusty camera to jack Topper in hope that he will use it as well as Ace did. We leave Carol Reaser's toothbrush, which gave its life for a worthy cause one cold early morning. We leave Judy Roberts' good looks and Item 7. Item 8. Item 9. Item 10 Item ll Item 12 Item 13 Item 14 Item 15. Item l6 Item 17 Item 18. talent, to anyone who can use them as well as she has. Howard Smith and Dan Deever leave two of the most important oflices in the school to two very ambitious and con- scientious people. We leave Diana I-Iancock's vitality to the whole school, knowing that if every- one were like Diana, AHS would be a pretty great place. We leave Ed Fulton's flaming red hair to Leroy Barber. We leave the terrific acting and singing ability of Debbie, R. H., and Marilyn to future musical productions. To Rick Swartz a word of encourage- ment from Ronnie Ackerman, you'll outgrow it, I did! We leave Connie Hamilton's and Sara Leiter's varsity cheering positions to Molly Kopp and Sandy Rule. We leave Mike Pifer's orange pants to Doug Clark to add to his collection. To anyone joining AHS's Class of 1960 next year, we leave the hope that they may make as many friends as quickly as Kathy Boyle did this year. We leave Ned Sale's undisputed co-ordi- nation to Ox. ARTICLE III. TO THE INDIVIDUAL CLASSES: Item l. Item 2. Item 3. Item 4. To the freshman class we leave four years experience in which we have learned that a smile and a Hi and an effort to make good grades are not to be ignored, but liked and admired. To the sophomores, we leave the pep and vitality so necessary to keep their senior class on its toes. This is a big job, and will involve many hours of plotting and scheming-good luckl To the junior class, we leave a year in which to face the trials and ordeals with which every senior class must cope, and which ours struggled to meet compe- tently and efficiently. To the school, its students, and faculty, we leave the memory of the Class of 1959, humble in the realization of its present inadequacies but proud of the goals it is capable of attaining. 1959 CLASS PROPHECY On June 9, 1980, the class of 1959 held its 20th reunion last night at the Ashland Sanitary Dairy. Jim Kopp who arranged the reunion fell true to form when he did not put in an appearance. The former Ann Gongwer who married her A.H.S. steady date is now suing for divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty. Denny Lash is pleading the 5th Amendment. Judith Burns can be seen on T.V. almost any night. She now gets paid for gargling. Joanne Speck, Yvonne Jervis, and Gloria Chand- ler, who had gone into the clothing business in high school now operate Helen's Family Shop. Renny Crenshaw returned, a shadow of his former self. He had just been promoted to a half-star general. Bob Enyeart had been working diligently last night, and now proudly announces that he is fin- ally able to repay Larry Ulery for the glass coffee table he broke twenty years ago. Fuzzy Howman is really in the chips-he owns a gambling house in Las Vegas. One moment of entertainment was rendered by Joyce Kissel. She had forgotten her glasses but she was able to read her new book written in Braille, by Kay Mullenix, named My Personal Combat With Posture. Novelist Susie Stahl then offered a rendition of her new book, All That Nature Gives Us. Thanks to Mary Bell McCarter, telephone sys- tems are no longer necessary. People give their messages to Mary, who in turn shouts them to any point on the globe. Do you remember all of the hopes Dennis O'Neil had for himself? Well . . . N O T H I N G I Joe and Al's Place owned and operated by the Heckman's was raided last night for boot-legging by police lieutenant Larry Fisher. Ted McDowell is now with Stan Kenton and Prez Prado playing the harp. Larry Miller is a noted panelist on the program, I've Got a Line. Linda Schondel couldn't make it last night because she couldn't find anyone to buzz her up. Phil Greene was voted our Good Will Ambassador to the U. N. Mary Lee Hout and Larry Daliere announced the birth of their 12th child. Bonnie Johnson and Miriam Abrams are still look- ing for the man on the street. Tom Robottom is now a test pattern for colored T.V. Jack Kehl, in his pharmacy career has contributed greatly in the fight against cancer caused by nico- tine. He quit smoking! Gerald Warner is now a celebrated trapeze artist. Everyone felt that his bright red tights did much more for Gerald than they did 20 years ago for some female '59ers. Bill Swartz, a veterinarian, publicly thanked sev- eral of his classmates for the help they gave him in finding a cure for rabies. Bill admitted he himself was rather tired from biting so many people. Carol Morr, Judy Worst, and Nancy Eshelman have decided to give up on the AC boys. They are really too old now for the college set. Gloria Tinker, a graduate of the University of Michigan, is now latrine orderly at Culver. She just couldn't stay away. Suzanne Waters, internationally-known lawyer, told the group that after 20 years of campaigning for a new high school she had succeeded. Of course, the funniest surprise was that all the girls who had been engaged back in 1959 are now spinsters. Russ Reed, a former FFA boy, now owns a farm, and the cows, to his utter amazement, lay eggs. The group awarded Jeannette Mowry a trophy for the person who had done most for Ashland. When the electrical power failed and lights went out, Jeannette saved the city by twirling her flaming batons for two weeks. Carol Reaser is now in the entertainment world. She is a favorite on the new T.V. show, Keep Laughing. Joyce Beck's jitterbugging ability brought her to the attention of a dancing celebrity, who's job she is now taking over, The Arthur Murray Dance Party. This might be called the Dick Clark Amer- ican Bandstand for middle-aged teen-agers. The '59 class's treasury was increased substantially when an x-ray of the Oyster twins revealed a for- tune in pearls which they generously shared with their old classmates. Jelf Kopp is performing a valuable service to the entire world. He has been leaning against the Leaning Tower of Pisa for the past twenty years keeping it straight. Tracy Topping was the girl who in 1959 was voted Most Likely to Go. Well, she did! Tracy was the first woman winner of the Indianapolis 500. The astounding fact is that she drove the entire race backwards! Knowing Tracy, what else? Joan Rauth is working with Clark Kent on a New York newspaper, The Metropolis. Once in a while she takes her glasses off and moves cars, buildings and oceans. 150GOGOGOBOBOQOEOSOGOEOSOBOBOBOBOGOGOBOBOBOBOBOSOQOGOGOBOSOGO SE IOR ACTIVITIES ABRAMS, Miriam Louise ADAMS, Linda Irene-Bows 2: Musical 8: College Club 8, 4: jr. Students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades compose the A Cappella Choir, directed by Dr. Louis Pete. The musical Carousel, by Rodgers and Ham- merstein was presented by the choir, thespians, and orchestra in February. Perhaps the most different and outstanding feature of this year was the partici- pation of the choir members in the 1959 Opera Sing held at Severance Hall on April 8. Again the choir brightened the holidays with such concerts as the Christ- mas performance on December 14, and the Easter concert on March 15. The year ended with their appearance in the Senior Farewell Assembly, Bac- calaureate, and Commencement. 71 l'nxl lfmw: Ia. I.lghlnc-r, S. IM-rkslum-. ll. I'Il'CSIUllC, I. Moore. Sffr- nml lfn1:':C.. STUDENT COUNCIL ADVISOR Mr. Bingham The wheels began turning for the Student Council with the Rhythm Rendez- vous dance in October. This representing body was equally active in planning and sponsoring other social activities such as the Sadie Hawkins dance, Christ- mas dance, and Spring Follies. The Student Council acts as a sounding board for student ideas and views, as an intermediary body between students and faculty, and as a governing body. During the year their meetings dealt primarily with some form of the three above functions. Good relationships with other schools were highly encouraged and given a chance to develop when the members met with the governing bodies of the other schools. Every Tuesday this organization, composed of one representative from each home room, assembled and discussed problems of the school, suggestions made by students, and extra-curricular activities in which they wished to participate. Also in January they contributed to the clothing drive. More problems, more legislature, more work lies in the future-still to be solved are many, many problems. But as usual the Student Council has func- tioned properly and they will continue to do so in the years to come. , I .1 1 .. .. kt is if , , ii, 2 Q .1134 ' s 98 OFFICERS PRESIDENT Dan Deever VICE PRESIDENT Dean Baldwin SECRETARY Mary Lee Hout TREASURER Bill Dudte First Row: P. It was not good in respect to wins and losses, but in the respect that Ashland has started a march towards becoming a football town. Under the direction of head coach john Hogan, the boys started from scratch learning the fundamentals and the right way to do things. They found that this isn't very easy. It takes time, practice, hard work, and desire. The phrase desire is the name of the game will probably not be forgotten by the football boys and many people of Ashland for a long time. Coach Hogan's philosophy of well organ- ized football proved to be successful at the gates, for the home crowds were better than doubled this year. It was no wonder that attendance was good, even though they were losing, because you could see the team improving with every game. Near the end of the season both the offense and defense were clicking like clock- work and seemed as though at any second they might explode and go racing down the field like a roaring freight train. Only once could you have said this team was beaten before the last gun was fired. That was the Marion game. On this outing the Arrows were simply outclassed. VVith men like A. Andrews, R. Bartley, C. The team looked impressive against Dover, and early in the season it looked as if we might have a top sea- son as the squad toppled Galion 76-62. The team's hope was not dimmed despite the fact that three points at games end kept the Arrows out of the win column. The season was culminated with wins over Tiffin Calvert and Culver. Due to the formation of a league the rivalry be- tween Ashland and Culver was terminated. Improvement awards were granted to Bob Sweet and Ken Oxenrider, two of the finest defensive, offen- sive men during the year. Coach Valentine's squad showed terrific spirit throughout the season. With boys like Dick Hunter, Gaylord Meininger, Dave Smalley, and Bud Paxton back next year, the Arrows are sure to have a trium- phant season in '59 - '60, H'z1il rchoumls in the Gallon Game.
