The Guide has been completely rearranged this year. Feeling that an activity belongs with the class that participates in it, we have created class sections. Each of these sections contains one class and its sports, clubs, and all other activities pertaining to that year. Activities having more than one class involved are placed in the section having the majority of students participating. Extra sections include the junior-Senior featurette, in which the activities largely composed of juniors and seniors are placed, the Service section, and the Faculty and Administration section. Since life itself moves always forward, we have begun the Guide with our freshmen and brought it class by class to our seniors. We hope you will like this new arrangement. Now we invite you to - Meet Ashland High School. 4 - - im.u-'-'--f- -hm--tw '--'---- 1' TABLE OF CGNTENTS Faculty Freshmen Sophomore Iunior Ir. Since coming to Ashland High School he has made friends with many teachers and students because ol his thoughtlulness to others. As a result ol his interest in students he has devoted countless hours to the supervision ol' several activities. Through his discreet selection, he has diligently headed the planning ol many educational and entertaining assemblies. During the past year, he has served as adviser to the College Club. ln this capacity he has carelully guided and advised students concerning their future plans. 'l'llCI'Cli0l'C, we take extreme pleasure in dedicating this years GUIDE to a gentleman, a line teacher, and a friend to all, Mr. Austin R. Keiser. 6 These are the people who shi .pe our lives and greatly help in our climb to niaturity. Great patience and an understanding of our intense rush to be inde- pendent znre needed t ' o cope with our teenage exuber- ance. They worry about us, pray for us, and are often znnused by our inexperience in life. XVe are indeed proud to have ou n y leet the Admin- istration and Faculty of Ashland High School. li' f ' ' ,5 if TP - . n- -3 N-.'.y, ' 4 kfffg5T21ti'.i ' I , -3-N 'Y .aid X . br' ' 0 O xx N ' 6 Qtunv L , is K Q 1 J. I am sure that halls never look so long, seniors so tall, teachers so stern, and books so thick as they appear on this day. However our freshmen are no longer strangers. They have been with us a year and we hope they now love Ashland High as we do. This Fall they will help welcome a new class of wide eyed youngsters, but now they are still our Freshmen. The play tells the humorous story of the scatter-brained Vanderhof family. Included in the household is Mr. DePenna, the ice man who came several years ago and just stayed. Alice is the most normal of the group, and though she admits her family is different, she loves them just the same. Alice, a secretary for a large company, dates her boss's son and they fall in loveg however, she fears the day when his parents, members of New York's social set will meet her eccentric family. But he has to get married sometime. Lash C lhcuci Assistant Coach Benton. FOOTBALL The past football season was one of great frustration due to several factors, mainly injuries and the flu epidemic which forced us into many changes at key positions, quarterback and fullback. During the season we changed quarterback three times and fullback five times. At the beginning of the year we knew we would be exceptionally green which showed very prominently in our first few games due to the number of fumbles and mistakes in general. At the time when we should have jelled we lost our quarterback to the flu. The next quarterback played two games, looked excep- tionally good in the last half, completing six out of eight passes, but he was in- jured in this game. Our next quarterback played only two games and the season was over. At the fullback position we had a similar situation. I felt at the beginning of the year that we would have a team that would win over half of their games and still believe they were more than capable of it. No one but the players and the coaches will ever know how hard this year's team worked and how hard they tried during our games. Never did we ask a boy to do something that he didn't do his best. NVe had some exceptional performances during the year by both linemen and backfield men that we were very proud of. This year when we put our team on the field we knew they would do their best to win. They never quit trying even though in many games we were just plainly outmanned. Even though our record is not as good as I had hoped, I am more proud of this team than any other because of the attitude of the boys, the cooperation, physical and mental development, and the over-all satisfaction of working with a great bunch of boys. To the seniors leaving us we will always look forward to your support and wish you the best of luck. To the ones returning we look forward to a great team. jack Powell 69 .. ,-. ,Y v fb' -. 35. Shortly after returning home from the Ashland-XVooster football game on Oc- tober l9, -joe Heckman complained of a pain in his back, then blacked-out. He was rushed to Samaritan Hospital where he underwent surgery for a ruptured liver. joe had taken over the quarterback slot for ailing -lim Kopp and gave an aggressive performance in a hard fought game. lt is believed that Joe suffered the injury that aggravated a previous condition as he made a last-second tackle to prevent a XVooster touchdown. Since the expenses for the operations which joe underwent depleted the high school athletic fund the XfN'ooster and Ashland faculty colaborated on the idea of a .loc Heckmau Benefit Night. At- tractions of the night were Dave Sheller, Bud Anderson, Tony Hitchcock, Joe XVagenhals, the Sweet Sixteen, and a basketball game between the Ashland and Hlooster faculties. -W-Q-gg 't Ubi-W II.. Tame The Tiger Day Outstanding among this year's rallies was the night rally held early in the football season. A parade formed of the band, Arrowettes, and a caravan of student filled cars proceeded from the High School to Redwood Stadium. There the students succeeded in raising school spirit from the grave with their resounding cheers. Other rallies featured mock cheerleaders by five senior boys and a Tame the Tigers Day when the fiftieth person greeting one of four predesignated people by saying Tame the Tigers won prizes. Our only majorette this year was Jeannette Mowry who did a commendable job both in commanding the band and twirling. Due to bad weather and a flu epidemic, the band marched at only a few home games. However the shows were presented by band members from the stands when they were unable to march. Among the community functions the Band participated in were marching in the Halloween Parade and providing music for the Community Breakfast during Old Fashioned Days.
