PAXTON It is an honor for the Senior Class to dedicate the 1955 edition of the Guide to a person who has truly served Ashland High School and the community during the past twenty- Eve years as teacher, counselor, and friend. To his work he has brought wisdom and un- derstanding of human frailty, common sense and justice, friendliness and a sympathetic sense of humor which have served the youth of Ashland well and have helped to make them better boys and men. Literally thousands of boys have sought his help in solving their personal problems and in selecting their subjects of study, and they have always found him a trustworthy colmselor. We salute our Dean of Boys, Mr. Roger M. Paxton, with the hope that this dedication will in some measure express our sincere thanks and warm appreciation of his efforts in behalf of all who have attended Ashland High School. 7 4,, uv ei 'fif 1 ,ggi -if 'a V , ' 1' 'I M Ji ..: 6117? 167: 'Y' - fu n.- ' , YL f 'I I 45'U'r'9!f ,. . To promote homemaking, leadership, and fair play are the primary aims of the Future Homemakers of America, and with the aid of their advisers, Miss Carpenter and Miss Wiley, this large club follows these ideals. In the fall, a traditional candlelight ceremony installed new members. Initiates were presented with a rose, symbol of the national organization. Throughout the year, members attended the County rally at Hayesville, the state convention at Columbus, and the FHA Camp at Muskingum. The club's activities were financed by selling Christmas cards, by holding a bake sale, and by selling at a basketball game. Row 1: E. Swineford, R. Titschinger, D. Moose, M. Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve is the motto of the Future Farmers of America, one of Ashland Iligh School's most worthwhile organiza- tions. Une of the reasons that this club is so worthwhile is that every member must have a crop and livestock project be- fore he can apply for membership. These projects must be maintained in order to retain membership ill the organiza- tion. l'ntil a new member has completed one year's proj- ect, he is a Green Hand. After the first year he gets the F11- ture Farmer degree. Those who have outstanding projects and who exhibit outstanding characteristics of leadership may be eligible for the State Farmer degree. Of the state membership, only 2 per cent are eligible for this degree. During the past years, the Ashland FFA has had 66 State Farmers. The degree of American Farmer is the organiza- tion's highest honor, only Q per cent. ofthe national mem- bership being chosen. Ashland has had 5 American Farm- ers. During the year the club participates in judging con- tests. Competing members judge such things as general livestock, poultry, and farm soils. In the chapter contest, which includes judging these classifications and several more, Ashland's chapter has never placed less than first. In conjunction with the state's soils and forestry con- servation project, members of the club once again this year purchased and planted seedling trees in Ashland County. The adviser is AIr. Krill.
