Krill l I D' It is appropriate that the 1954 Guide be dedicated to a gentleman who in his 32 years of loyal service has guided hundreds of students through Ashland High School. Because he has taught his students to think, to reason, and to understand, because he has helped his students to develop their talents and strengthen their weaknesses, be- cause he has stressed the principles of good citizenship and has set an example by his active interest and participation in affairs relating to his church, his community, and his profession., we, the class of 1954, deem it a privilege to dedi- cate our Guide to Mr. George H. Krill, with the hope that he will lind happiness and satisfaction in continued service to Ashland High School and to the community. 4 -.- . - , ..- i YV.. .,,,, , ,Wm , x Q 4 W, i ' in . Varsity A youngster compared to the other organiza- tions in school, the Varsity AN Cluh has already made definite moves to raise the general level of student support at athletic contests. By such prac- tices as wearing their A sweaters on chosen days. and attending in a body all home games. as well as many away games., the members of this group served as a foeal point for team hacking by the school. Shortly after its beginning., the group clccted officers and set up a four-provision constitution. This constitution. besides mentioning lhc wearing of AN sweaters, dealt with dues and membership, meetings, and oflieials and their duties. ' il-Y Y ' . k-. One of the big projects of the Girl, Reserves is their little sisters. Each member this year had at least two. The little sisters are seventh graders who still feel like strangers in the high school. The older girls do their best to solve any problems these new students might have. A wiener roast, Christmas party, and Valentine party were held for them. This Christmas, for the second year in succession, the girls visited the county home and delighted the aged by caroling for them. Another traditional activity, the Easter assembly, was sponsored by the Senior Girl Reserves. Something new was added this year in the form of a Junior-Senior Girl Reserve formal which had as its theme, Winter W'onderland. This dance was held January 1. Almost every meeting this year stressed self-im- provementf' One meeting featured a panel composed of adult authorities who advised the girls on their prob- lems and answered their questions. Other speakers were Arthur Gorsueh, who emphasized citizenship, Mr. Flora, of Ashland College, who spoke on his recent trip Girl Reserves Row l-L. Leistcr, B. Johnson, A. Harwood, TW. Green, C. Talent night, when special abilities were displayed, and fashion night, when dress and behavior for special occasions were discussed, were two more popular meet- ings. But probably, the most popular and in some ways the saddest meeting was Remember When. The girls reminisced about their elementary and high school experiences. Ruth Kantzer, the capable faculty adviser, aided the Girl Reserves in living up to their codes: Face life squarely and Find and give the best. 97 67 Row 1-M. Shafer, G. Gault, B. Harned, N. These girls also were re- sponsible for the traditional Christmas assembly which included the traditional music, scripture. and play, The Gift of the Lamb. The adviser, Miss Martha Bowman, directed the project. The Junior Girl Reserves united with the senior group to sponsor a formal dance which was held January 1. This dance. with the theme Winter Wonderlandfi D was the first affair of its kind in a number of years. One of the most interesting meetings of the year was held in February when there was a panel discussion of boy-girl relations. Another valuable meeting was held in April in connection with the Senior Girl Reserves, when Jeannette Findley. President of the senior group, told of her participation in the activities of Girls, State and the valuable experience she gained there. ln May, a mother-daughter tea and a farewell picnic in honor of the graduating seniors were given. ,A N, fx Student Row 1-A. Wayne Strine hands out prizes at Sadie Hawkins Dance. 70 Few organizations in sehool have had as ambitious a program during the past year as the Student Senate. Ranging from the sponsorship of a country-style Sadie Hawkins dance to participation in the Foster Parents Plan, the Senate's accomplishments are felt in many ways. Advised for the past eight years by Paul Sherek, the Senate was most noticed this year for three danees which it presented-the Rhythm Rendezvous, the annual Christmas Danee, and, of course, the Sadie llawkins. Rhythm Rendezvous, something of a neweomer, was emeeed this year by VVATG announeer Wayne Byers, and aired over that same station as part of tl1e anti-van- dalism eampaign. Senate M 1 .. Spanish Club, advised by Fiora Giunta, offers its mem- bers a chance to become better acquainted with the Span- ish-speaking peoples of the world at a time when interna- tional understanding is extremely important. Because the best way to deal with anything strange is to become familiar with it, thc members of Spanish Club make learning about Latin America the main objective of their organization. Although the members met only once a month, social activities were not neglected during the past year. The annual Spanish Club dance, which was lu-Id in thc girls' gym, was one of the organizatioifs principal contributions 'to the school calendar. ln addition to its more specialized benefits. After completing two consecutive undefeated seasons the Arrows finally had an off-season which eventually catches up with any team in any sport. Harry Miller, the Arrows' new grid coach, pulled his team through the year with a not-too-impressive record of two wins, five setbacks, and two ties. Despite the mediocre campaign Coach Miller worked hard with the boys, and they improved steadily throughout the season. Losing their first contest in twenty-two games, the Arrows were defeated in the season's opener by a strong Shelby team. Showing improvement, but not enough, they remained in the loseris column for the next two games, bowing to Berea and Garfield lleights. The Arrow eleven then fought Mansfield Madison to a tie and the following week pulled a stunning upset over Wooster for their first victory. Traveling to Wooster, the Arrows again came out on the short cnd of the scoring. They then upset a heavily favored Marion team, only to drop the next game to Canton Lehman. Finishing the season in fine style, the Arrows beat Galion in the annual homecoming game to cap- ture win number two for the year. Injuries plagued the Millcrmen throughout the season and made it doubly hard on the players. Several line- men were forced to shift from one position to another. For the biggest part of the campaign junior Phil Krause and senior John Ilarpster worked at the offensive ends while seniors ,lack Ebert and Stan Rickel handled the tackle positions. Senior co-captain Dan McBride and Dave Sharrock were the guards witl1 junior Duane Saekett finishing out the Arrow line. 102 Tackles-Jack Ebert, Lowell Bender, Dan McMillen, Jerry Korsmeyer, Duane Thompson. Two year letterman Dave Crindle quarterbaeked the team with Joe Sharr and co-captain Dave Lf-rseh running from the halfbaek positions. After Sharr re- ceived a broken eollarhone, junior Fred llitelieoek shifted from his end position and filled in nieely for the remainder of the year. Junior fullback Roger Wissler turned in a fine season leading the Arrows' ground-gaining attack. Terry Stone, Wissleris understudy, also helped out the offensive cause, turning in several timely gains. The defensive team had few ehanges. At the end posi- tions juniors Duane Thompson and Dennis Finley did most of the work. Later on in the season both boys were injured but were ably replaeed by Saekett and senior Leroy Stauffer. In the defensive backfield junior Joe Bolin played a linebacker with senior John llartney and junior Harold Simmons at the halfbaeks. All in all, the Arrows' football squad and eoaeliing staff, made up of Harry Miller, Diek Wolfe, and George Valentine, did a very commendable job. Although the Arrows of 1953 did not go undefeated., they learned that there is satisfaction in knowing that they did their best, and that is all any good sport can do. 103 i . Harry Miller, Head Coach Head line coach Dick Wolfe had his work cut out for him this ear because of the shifting of formations and the many injuries suffired by the s nad. Overcoming these obstacles, Coach Wolfe worked his linemencliard and on several occasions the line play was exce tional. George Valentine, the Arrows' new athletic director, handled the backfield coaching. Besides the time he spent coaching, he also worked many extra hours to make the season the financial success that it was. J. u. xnyut --NW Y J Junior Varsity Coaches Football Coaches With the retirement of C. E. Taylor, Harry Miller was moved up to head football coach. For the past three years he had coached the junior varsity team. In his first year as the varsity grid mentor he did much experimenting with his team, using both the T and single wing formations. With the beginning of practice this coming fall, Miller will have thirteen returning lettermen around whom he will build his 1954 squad. .Ji x i George Valentine, Backfield Coach, Dick Wolfe, Line Coach Junior varsity coach Oliver Payne moved into his new position with the promotion of head coach Miller. Although the Darts won only two starts, the boys gained a great deal of experience which will help them when they make the jump to the varsity squad. J. B. Pryor assisted Payne-throughout the year and had the added re- sponsibility of managing the ticket sales for all the games. Pryor a so handled the coaching of the Sth grade football squad. ie 1 04 Arrows In Action 0 Sllvllry 26 0 lit-rva 6 7 Garlivlcl llcigllts I2 7 lwatlison 7 I3 Woostvr 12 0 Wooster 37 7 Marion 7 0 Canton Lehman 61 23 Calion 6 Q ' - . ,. ,wwf fx ' t Dave Lvrsrh scores a touchdown for llw Arrows in tlwir 23-6 min ovvr Galion in llu' ll0lll0f'0llllllg ganw. Taylor, Coach. llaving one of the best seasons in many years the 1953-511 edition of the Ashland Arrows brought their campaign to a close with a record of twenty wins a11d only two set-backs. Coach Cloyce E. Taylor, in his eighth term at the helm of the local eagers. ran his total victories to one hundred and fifty -eight while losing only thirty-two. A well-balanced Arrow team made up of All- Uhio Ken Sidle, Jim Dilgard, Larry Brewer, Jack Miller and Max Messner, along with Jim Runyon and Tom linck, who were used frequently, proved a winning combination for Coach Taylor. Averaging over seventy-live points per game, the Arrows were ranked with the top ten scholastic teams in the state. While enjoying their better- than-average year, the Taylor five set several new records. Lanky Ken Sidle surpassed his own scor- ing record with 510 points in twenty-two contests. As a team the Arrows tied the record of twelve consecutive wins and reached the second highest score for one game, running the scoreboard to ninety-eight. The Arrows, wasting no time in showing their strength, opened the schedule with twelve straight victories, gaining decisions over Cleveland Lincoln, Bellevue, Toledo DeVilbiss, Galion, Massillon, Marion, Columbus Central, Mansfield, Lorain, Toledo Libby, Elyria, and Port Clinton. Thirteen proved to be an unlucky number for the Taylormen. In their thirteenth encounter they suffered their only defeat in the regular season to a smoothly operating East Liverpool five. Coming back strong after a defeat, the Arrows defeated Wooster and Columbus Aquinas. The Arrows then broke Mansfield's ten-game win streak on their home floor. They finished the season with three straight wins over Lima Central, Culver, and New Philadelphia. Looking forward to their second consecutive sectional championship, the Arrows were the top team in the Marion Sectional Tournament. After a slow start against Crestline, the Arrows came back strong to defeat Galion and reach the semi- finals. Here the Shelby Whippets put an end to all the Arrows, tournament hopes by handing them their second loss of the season 68-62. KEN SIDLE ALL-UHIO Kc-n Sifllv. Basketball practice in the gym. The Girls' All-Star game. 122 The Girls' Athletic Club has a year-round program of sports which allows sophomore, junior and senior girls to continue their interest in athletics after they finish phy sieal education classes. Girls are given a minimum of 30 points per semester if they participate in one sport, and these points are applied toward the 600 necessary to receive the coveted A award. Myers, Field and Brookside Park, as well as the local bowling alley, augment the facilities of the high school athletic department in providing the play areas for the various sports. In the fall, soccer teams under the management of Skip Wait played at the park. Volleyball was popular because it provided the opportunity to he chosen for the team which competed against teams from Wooster and Loudon- ville. Olive Smith, manager of this sport, was responsible ATHLETICS for officiating and scoring in these games. During the winter months the girls bowled at the reere- ation bowling alley where they competed in teams and as individuals for high-scoring honors. Frances Hoskins was in charge of this part of the program. Basketball, managed by Nancy Taylor, was highlighted by a tournament among sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students who were proficient in this sport tried out for the All-Star teams. Clara Mae Crumlick managed the recreational sports program which included badminton, shutlleboard, table tennis, and deek tennis. The most popular spring sport, softball, which was managed by Anne Taylor, brought out seven teams which eompeted for places in the softball tournament. Pauline Kruse, advisor of the G. A. C., was responsible for planning and integrating the entire program. ljowlin f- mart of the winter s iorls' ll'0'l'ZlII1 la l I l The girls, volleyball team defeated Loudonville. 193 CHEERLEADERS Ruth Titschinger E.
