His curricular and extra-curricular activities have won him the place of favorite friend and favorite teacher in the hearts of A. H. S. students. ' Because of his vibrant personality, diligence in work, understanding, and warm humor we dedi- cate this yearbook to Dwain Murray and wish with all sincerity that his future will be filled with the utmost happiness. 143555- Foreword As we round the bend into the latter half of the twentieth cen- tury, our lights focus upon the crossroads of the future. Our past journey has led us through wars, racial discrimination, and many disasters, but out of these have come social improvements, scientific advancement, and the hope for a brighter, more suc- cessful future. Now that our task is done, the Senior Class pre- sents you with the 1950 Guide and leaves you with a clear track ahead. TIME TABLE OF CONTENTS STATION DISTANCE FACULTY CITY . . . . SENIORVILLE ..,. Senior Council From way back in the days when the little Tom Thumb first chugged along its beaten track until today when the streamlined Twentieth Century Limited roars through our buzzing metropolis, the name Senior has been honored. For many cherished years trains have, at the end of each annual journey, taken on a, crop of new and inexperienced passengers and left behind their familiar Seniors. At the next stop we, the 1950 class of Ashland High School, will be left behind. We are much like our ancestors, who were long ago crowded off the old Tom Thumb into our same prob- lem. What next? We find ourselves stranded in the middle of the twentieth century. Behind us lies a half century of the attempts of our ancestors to make a more perfect civilization and ahead-well, that's up to us. As has been the thought of all Seniors before us, our first thought is if only we could buy a new ticket and start our journey all over again. We would start in the seventh grade, a bit green behind the ears, but filled to the brim with school spirit. We would be proud to take our places in the halls of A. H. S., scarcely breathing when a Senior would pass us in the corridor. With this beginning we would each year add new information and more activities to busy lives until we once more be- came Seniors. What fun it would be to re-elect our last Student Council, join our classmates in the mid-winter party, go once more to the Junior-Senior Prom, and again sponsor our class play, A Date With Iudy. We would like to attend another picnic at Chippewa Lake and receive our diplomas for a second time, but this is impossible. We are stranded at the same depot where the Tom Thumb first left off its Seniors. We cannot turn back into the first half of the twen- tieth century, for we have reached our first goal-graduation. Though we will never forget our carefree school days. we must follow the example of our forefathers and strive for our second goal-a more nearly perfect civilization to- morrow. In order that the spirit of our class may never leave nor be forgotten we do hereby bequeath the following, hoping that the memory of our class, be it glad or sad, may always remain as a fragment of this, our alma mater, so long as a fragment of it doth stand. ARTICLE I To our teachers-ever strong, brave and true, Item l: Item 2: Item 3: Item 4: Item 5: Item 6: The following items we do bequeath to you: To Mr. Hartzler-We leave twelve volumes of Milton Berle specialties and the key to the city of Massil- lon. To Miss Campbell-We leave a fresh crop of Romeos, Cyranos, and don't knows. To Mr. Gnagey-We leave a large economy size bottle of Air Wick and the text entitled How To In- sure Your Experiments or You Can't Get To Heaven in a Test Tube. To Miss Foust-We leave a case of Scotch so she may demonstrate to her next year's Problems classes that Drink Does Not Pay. To Mr. Valentine-We leave a Mrs. Valentine. Lim Plank-We leave a bottle of hair restorer and a copy of the popular hit It's Later Than You ARTICLE II To all the eager students who shall walk in our paths. Item l: Item 2: Item 3: Item 4: Item 5: Item 6: Item 7: We leave you the following purely for laughs: May you find a powder room as convenient and widely used as that of Shirley Sidle's locker. We leave the back seat of Tom Siler's hearse to all those who are dead set on shoveling off to Mansfield next year. We leave the hope that you will spend as many enioyable lunch periods in the reverent sanctuary of Room 212 as we did. We leave our secret formula for finagling double lunch periods attached to a ten dollar bill with the old proverb It's funny what money can do. We leave Dean Oak1ey's cackle to anyone who is chicken. ' - We leave George Peter's crutches to the school museum with an unbroken record for service. glVe leave Dick Tarr's powers of hypnotism to anyone who feels that he has spiritual contact with the wanues. ARTICLE III To the many organizations of which we uphold. Item l: Item Item 3: Item 4: Item 5: Item 6: May your futures be successful-may they never grow cold. To the stage crew-We leave a pamphlet containing ten easy lessons on how to make love to an usher. To the Panorama Staff-We leave some subscribers and a pot to put the money in. ' To the Cafeteria-We leave a complete staff of Chef Boyardies, newly graduated from the boy's Home Ec. Dept. To Hi-Y and Koda Klub-We leave a buried treasure detector and sixty more seconds to put toward the deadline in order that they may put over another successful formal. To the Girl Reserves-We leave an excess of pot lucks, good lucks, and the hope that they tracked down whatever it was that inspired them to conduct the Search. To the Guide Staff-We leave a permanent charge account at the school store and a thoroughbred bloodhound to assist them with Who's got the key? ARTICLE IV To all the underclassmen we leave here with you Item l: Item 2: Item 3: Item 4: The following list of Don'ts -you'll be sorry if you do. Don't try to compete with Dick Baker in his skill of performing on the trampoline. His nightly practice on the bed springs has the championship tied up. Don't follow in the footsteps of Ron Hostler and try to get fresh with a parking meter: it may hinder your chances of celebrating Smile week. Don't use the Fritz method when parking your car, as your chances for escaping without a ticket will be slim. Don't try to do anything that our class hasn't done for we warn you-there is nothing left to be done. Finally, with this document serving as a last remembrance of the ioys and sorrows of four wonderful years, we ioin the Passing Parade of Seniors, proud of our school and the many hidden memories it conceals. It is with sad but hope- ful hearts that we march into the future with ambition, honor, and service-keynotes to mid-century success. Sandy Iameson Sonia Welsh PROPHECY OF THE CLASS OF 1950 Props trunks, books Scene An Attic Characters Mother, Daughter Time 1980 Mother We should be able to find some old dresses up here in the attic that would just fit your part in the play. Daughter I'll bet we have enough stuff up here to costume the whole cast. Mother Look through those things and see what you want. Daughter You know, Mother, some of those old things the girls in your day wore to school. Look at all these trunks up here! Mother I always liked to save everything from my high school years. Those were the days! Daughter Look at this - yearbooks, scrapbooks, diaries - and this picture, why Mother, it's you! Mother Let me see, oh my word, that's my senior graduation picture. Daughter Oh, Mother, here are your old Guides. Why didn't I ever find these before? The girls will go wild. Mother Yes, here is our Sr. Guide and the pictures of all my classmates. It's interesting to think back about everyone and wonder what became of them tsaid musinglyl. Here's Howard Fackler. He was quite an athletic enthusiast: he broke his ankle during football season in his Ir. year and couldn't play halfback and I remember the time he didn't shave for a couple weeks due to a bet he made. Well, he has gained considerable fame you know. He owns the much raved about I'll Matchya Casino in New York. I believe I read that it was raided a few days ago. Daughter Who is this? He looks rather familiar. Mother Oh, that is Ray Bates. Yes, you've probably seen him dozens of times on the back of magazine covers. He poses for those advertisements which say, In lust Thirty Years, You Too, May Have A Physique Like Mine. And here is Sarah Baxter - a remarkable girl - she does social work out on the Blackfeet Indian reservations teaching the squaws how to walk with a papoose. Daughter This is Portia Benninghoff. Why I've seen her on television, isn't she the one who whistles and imitates bird calls? Mother This is Iohn. Good old Iohn Bahas. We always teased him so about the restaurant business. The funny thing is, that's where he ended up. He runs that little Drive-In spot The Eat It and Beat It or The Bun and Run. Daughter Oh, I've been there - the place is so novel. Instead of a juke box he sits on the refrigerator and plays requests on a trombone. Mother Hmm, who else have I heard about recently? This isn't - why it is! I'd nearly forgotten about little Don Rocky Culp and just think how famous he is. The boys said he hit more home runs at Boy Scout camp than any one on the Cabin Five Team. Daughter This one is nice looking - Sanford Jameson, oh, that isn't the old guy who sits down at the Y all day answering phone calls? Mother Yes, it was rather sad about him, his father was such a respectable man, too. Here is our Sr. Class President, Dudley Riggle. He and Anita Esbenshade were voted the Most Likely to Succeed. Dudley is out preaching in the Ozarks and Anita wrote that book - something about I was a member of the A. A. and look at me now. Bonnie Barr was made president of the organization a short time after the officials received her test score on the Drink Doesn't Pay Examination. Daughter Who is this girl? Mother That is Marcia Korsmeyer: she was our Homecoming Queen. That annual event started her on her road to success and now she is a cover girl for the Police Gazette. There were some kids who just couldn't stand leaving high school so they are still back in old A. H. S. For instance Bill Rush: he became so attached to our refresher math course that he decided to go back and teach it. Daughter Miss Emmons was in your class, wasn't she? Mother Yes, Bonnie Emmons served as secretary to Mr. Hartzler and then she was promoted over to Mr. Gor- such's office. No one ever knew what happened to Gary Averill but I did hear that he spent several years trying to pass the final test in Problems. Daughter You certainly had an outstanding class! Mother There were many more who made names for themselves. Poor Puni Plank had to serve a stretch at Tehachapi for smuggling snacks from Dick Tarr's drawer in the Guide Room, and Bonnie Ryland won the Women's World Championship for weight-lifting. Then, of course, you know that Barry Shank married Betty Grable's daughter. Harry Iames had to keep his trumpet in the family. Daughter Tell me more about these people. Mother Well, Pat Boeh is known as one of America's ten best dressed women and Glorene Leiter poses for the after you use our Mascara ads for the Maybelline Company. Shirley Sidle has a position down at the courthouse: she issues drivers licenses to school children. Chet Shoup is the suave clothes designer who creates fashions for men. He originated all the Chartreuse T-shirts Dean Oakley always wore to school. Daughter This is a nice yearbook. Who was the editor? Mother Dick Tarr-poor boy-suffered a serious relapse after it finally was published and went around portray- ing his part of Oogie Pringle in our Sr. Play for many months. He kept singing some song he said he wrote. Daughter Who else do you remember? f Mother Well, there was Ianet Walz who went to New York to seek fame. They say she is third from the end in the chorus line of that Broadway Hit I'll Be Down to Get You in a Taxi, Honey. Ioe Vogel is still con- nected with the square dancing profession. He originated the dance you know. We had one couple who led a rather strange life-Bob Halliday and Zoe Langlois. They married and went off to start housekeeping on some Island in the Pacific. One tragedy occurred in our Sr. Class and that was when Iulie Weirich got trampled to death trying to be first in line for dessert at the G. R. picnic. Daughter Gosh, things were really different in those days. Mother I remember the time a talent scout spotted Bud Iones during a basketball game and now he's out in Hollywood modeling for Which Twin Has the Toni? Yes-it was thirty long years ago when I walked across the stage to receive my diploma as a graduating member of the class of 1950 and I shall never forget the occasion. Now I have mused long enough about my high school days. Take what you want and bring them downstairs. Daughter Thanks loads, Mother. Gosh, some kids-that class of Fifty! Sonia Welsh Ianet Myers FIRST ROW: Lee Hurd, Treasurer: Mary Enck, Secretaryg Ted Quong, Vice Presidentg George Preston, President. SECOND ROW: Barbara Uncapher, Representative-at-Largeg Joan Cowan, Representative-at-Largeg Bonnie Bender, Representative to the Activities Committeep Rosemary Hutchison, Representative to the Assembly Committee: Miss Stanley, Advisor. JUNIOR COUNCIL lt was in the fall of '47 that we, the well known Iunior class, first boarded the Twentieth Century Limited that was to speed forward onto the track of a high school education. We probably deserved to be given the name Freshmen for that first semester, but next year we shall make up for that and more. To start off the last half of the Twentieth century in A. H. S., we shall get our revenge by passing that unmentionable name down to the class of '53 and crown ourselves Seniors. To receive this honorable title we must turn in our worn out Iunior round-trip ticket and exchange it for the last such ticket we may receive. Rounding the bend we can again see the familiar sights of the close of another school year. We think this trip through our Iunior year has been a very successful one and we are proud to scribble down these few reminders of it. The Panorama and School News were well supplied with Iunior names on the honor roll, the scholarship team, and American Legion essay contest. The music organizations, athletic teams, and school clubs were over- flowing with Iunior members. We needn't remind ourselves of our class play, Charlie's Aunt, for all those who saw it will keep the memory of this comedy alive. Of course we must mention our Iunior Council whose careful planning and guidance made all this possible. We shall always be thankful to Iudy Echelberger for her long hours of splendid work on our Ir.-Sr. Prom. Because of her unfailing help and leadership, we found it as much fun planning and decorating for one of the best proms A. H. S. has ever had, as we did serv- ing as hosts for it. That's one of the newest cars I have. This isn't just an ordinary car either: it has cz personality. Would you believe it if I told you they can sing any type of.song from ancient lyrics to modern jazz? They never forget a birthday either, for every time one of their members becomes one year older, this car is famous for its faithful singing of Happy Birthday. Yes sir, this car really makes me proud to clang my bell. Why, some- times when I'm chuggin' along my little ol' track I hum right along with them. This car hasn't been quite broken in yet, for as you can see, it doesn't run along as smoothly as my older experienced ones. An order from headquarters tells me that in Iune I must unhook my Sr. Choir Car and leave it behind. When that time comes, I'm going to pull off onto a side track and switch my brand new Ir. Choir Car right behind my engine to take its place. Junior Music Organizations That next car, the one with the broken window, is still a little green under the wheels. Sometimes when I'm chuggin' along, these beginning musicians let out some mighty pe- culiar sounds that just don't seem to belong to music. Of course that's the way I sounded too when I first started taking lessons on my whistle. Their director Mr. Reeder, however, is polishing them up quite a bit and every year turns out better. musicians. My engine was weak and my boiler temperature was over SOOO . I went to a mechanic who examined me, but he only shook his head and said, Your motor is in bad shape. You'd better drop off your passengers and turn in at the next round-house. I was heartbroken. After all these happy years, a strange train would take over my track while I was away. About this time a group of students. called the D. O. Club asked if they could join my train. I'd been saving my money for one of those new fangled observation cars, but I gave in. This club is proud to be one of only six such clubs in Ohio and of their theme Learn by Doing. After a morning of school they spend their afternoons in a firm where each can learn his trade by first-hand experience. These Seniors representing the trades of carpenters, plumbers, brick layers, radio tech- nicians etc. in this their first year, tinkered with my engine. Because of this club I have never had the embarrassment of being in a round-house and can still puff and chug as well as any engine half my age. 68 The car for the Girl Reserve Ushers is attached right on FIRST ROW Janet Walz Orene Gilliam, Louise Stone, Anita Esbenshade, Bett R la d, B ' E , Wh 1 Head Usher SECOND ROW Mr. McDowell, Advisor: Pat Wait, Ianet Myers, Sondrh M?:N:ry, Lggxir Krclggrixziedoglylvxa 22:55 Leila Shoemaker Marlene Plank. With the return of ten lettermen the football team opened their 1949 campaign at Willard. The initial game resulted with the A's losing a heart breaker 13-12. The following week the Orange and Black returned home and was successful in their home opener when they downed the powerless Rams of Mansfield Madi- son, 46-12. Next on the A's schedule were the mighty Blue Streaks from Sandusky. Although the Taylor Tots out played the upstaters, the Streaks out scored the Ash- land eleven 29-19. The Tots then traveled to Fostoria to face Tommy Bender's eleven and brought home their second vic- tory, 18-14. Shelby was the next victim of the A's attack as they fell 46-14 to give Ashland their second straight win. In the next two games the locals faced two of the state's top teams in Wooster and Marion. The Tots showed power and determination as they out fought and out played both foes only to lose to Wooster 13-7 and fall before Marion 14-6. With a few breaks the Orange and Black could have upset either power house. Traveling to Orrville the Tots were a little over con- fident and ended their last away game of the season with a 6-6 tie. Before a capacity, home coming crowd the A's finish- ed their season in a blaze of glory by trouncing Galion 52-0. Ray Bates and Howard Fackler served as co-captains with Fackler winning the Booster Club's Most Valuable Player Award. Along with other post season awards George Glasser was named to the A. P. George Valentine, starting his first year in coaching, has already proven himself an able track coach. Forming this year's team around fourteen lettermen, Coach Valentine has gathered together a group of boys who, with half the season gone, have been undefeated in five starts. So far the A's have won their first five track meets. The scores are as follows: Ashland 67M Oberlin 50h Ashland 60 Mount Vernon 58 Ashland 79M Bellevue 38W Ashland 68 Marion 52 Galion 30 Ashland 65 1X3 Sandusky 52 2! 3 Left to meet are the following: I May 17 Galion-Home , May 20 District Meet at Mansfield COACH GEORGE VALENTINE l 12 Without a doubt the big success of the Ashland High Tracksters is iue to team balance. At every meet points were gathered in all events, and eighteen boys figure in the scoring. At present Bill Hochstettler is leading the scoring with 58 points, Dick Tarr is next in line with 44, Ray Bates has scored 433A, Norm McVicker stacked up 253A, lim Reynolds has 21, Iohn Bahas and Tom Anderson each have 24, Bill Rogers is next Ln line with 23, Bob Wygant and Bob Laird have 15, and Howie Fackler has racked up 11M and Lee Hurd 10. With only five meets put away in nice fashion everyone has a chance to reach the double figure bracket. Before the season started Coach Valentine appointed Ray Bates and E-lowie Fackler as co-captains of the 1950 Track Squad. Both boys have been serving very well in this capacity, and have done a very splendid mb. The team as a whole has shown a fine spirit of co-operation and :t will to win that has kept their record intact. The high spot of the season so far was the winning of a large trophy oy the boys in the Marion Invitational. Besides winning the team :rophy the boys took home twenty-seven ribbons as individual awards. Also three Marion Stadium records were broken by the A's. Dick Tarr vaulted eleven feet, to break the pole vault record, Ray Bates wiped :ut the old 880 mark with a 2.09 performance: and Tom Anderson .eaped 5 ft. 9 inches in the high jump to set a new standard. SHOT PUT L DISCUS Dick Tarr, who hasn't been defeated this year in the pole-vault, has already broken the record of ll feet two inches with a vault of ll feet 5 inches. There is a very good chance that Dick may even break his own mark in the remaining meets. Tom Anderson in the high jump has also been unconquerable. Also noteworthy to mention are the point getters who have come through very nicely in the first five meets: Bill Hochstettler in the 100, 220, 440, and broad jump: Dick Tarr in the high hurdles: lim Reynolds and Bob Wygant in the mile-run: the half-mile twins, Ray Bates and Norm Mc- Vicker, the 880 relay of Laird, Rogers, Schaefer and Fackler: and the mile relay of Bates, McVicker, Schaefer, and Fackler. Iohn Bahas shot- putter deluxe, Bill Rogers our 20 feet broad jumper, and Ray Bates discus round out the list of old stand-by's to come through for the black and orange. A fellow who really helps Coach Valentine in all the detail work is A1 McElwain. Al's chief job is keeping track of all equipment, and making sure everything is in its right place at the right time. The Track Managers do a lot of work no one knows about, and Al has contributed wholeheartedly to the success of the team in the capacity.
