Dial lfnnesinyez, fditot :Verma Woeffliny, fusineda lffanayez We, the '49ers, through our four years of high school have been both impressed and inspired by the sparkling personality and capability of one Who has been a friend as Well as a leader. His spirit of teamwork, evident both on the play- ing field and in the class room, his unselfish par- ticipation in curricular and extra-curricular activi- ties, his friendliness in the halls-these are but a few of the qualities which make us proud to dedicate this yearbook to .Paul L. Sherck and wish him still brighter prospects for the future. F ore word To each of us who have spent many years seek- ing our gold, this book is an accumulation of ideas, ambitions, and accomplishments. lust as the 49'ers sought their gold a hundred years ago, Ashland High's 49'ers have also been searching for that intangible something. Graduation, their gold, is but a single Word and yet a twelve-year task. For many, their accom- plishments end with their school career While others will engrave their accomplishments across the log of life. When years have passed, personal goals will have changed but as memories never change, We present a past view and a pre-view of the 49'ers search for their gold. gon ten ta Reaching our goal through- 52601124692 Administration Faculty Our Goal .geniou-'49'ers Iuniors Sophomores Freshmen 8th Graders 7th Graders Reaching our goal through- ,feadezdhy Organizations Reaching our goal through- 72am work Boy's Sports Girl's Sports Reaching our goal through- good times Highlights 10-12 13-20 22-39 40-44 45-48 49-52 53-55 56-58 60-94 96-109 110-115 117-135 M X X ,XM j The Q x X. They discovered gold! ow just one hundred years later a group of students have discovered gold, too. Although it has taken them four years to do this, they have panned many lumps along the Way. ' In our freshman year We chose our sites and settled down to mining. We got oft to a good start with algebra and Latin. The second year We du i t b g n o iology and geometry. We began to enter into more activities and near the end of this e y ar We chose a cabinet to rep- resent us 1n our 1un1or year. That year We were bound to strike gold! We held class meetings, selected our rings, and studied hard, but still no gold. Still searching, We presented our junior class play, Dear Ruth On Ma 28 194 h . y , 8, we discovered GOLD W en We planned and presented Opus in Pastels for the Seniors In the fall oi '48 We continued th G e old Rush hoping to make it in '49, We began to process our little lumps which we had discovered. We polished these lumps of knowledge, leadership, and character. They became shiny nuggets which shined their brightest in athletics, dramatics, organizations, music, and in the classrooms. Success has come the hard way for many of us and the easy Way for others, but We have all made it. In Iune We Will receive our reward and our last nugget of gold-the most brilliant of all-our diploma at graduation. The processing has been a hard task, but Ashland High School is proud to present its latest discovery of gold-the 49'ers. 23 james Abram I. V. ' me G After five years of prospecting for their gold, the class of 1950 has made some truly noteworthy claims. To these oldtimers striving toward graduating might seem unending work. Yet only a bare three hundred and sixty-four days remain until this one ultimate goal is reached. Through the years these claims to dreams and hopes of success of gold, have become those of over two hundred people. Once, they were in the seventh grade scurrying through the halls as fright- ened mice, learning traditions and formulating these same dreams. On they went into the haven of the eighth grade: into the mysteries of Latin, then-oh, to be a sophomore! As juniors, they worked hard and successfully presented the class play, The Thirteenth Chair , they found places for some of their classmates in the class poll, while others achieved positions on the Panorama Staff, the Honor Roll, the Scholarship Team, and in clubs. The Iunior-Senior Prom, one of the most beautiful and most looked-forward-to events of the year, was their ac- complishment. Now they stand ready to take up their prospecting implements for another year-their last year to complete their claims as graduates of Ashland High School. 40 m Wzvxcke tc . go! s 9 X wall. Rep! School assemblies, open house in 216, and the hit of the year in the auditorium are the stages for these shows. On April l, Torchbearers, a hilarious comedy, was presented by Thespian Troupe 29. Miss Betty Bartlett, who directed the production, was assisted by Patricia Boeh and Ruth Spies. The play revolved around Mrs. Ritter, who against her husband's better judgment attempted to be- come an actress. She was highly encouraged by Mrs. Pampinelli, a amateur director, and her as- sistants Nelly Fell and Mr. Spindler. Mrs. Ritter took Clara Sheppard's place in the amateur production when Mr. Sheppard suddenly died after learning that his Wife was to have the leading role opposite Mr. Hossefrosse. Entanglements and troubles unwound themselves into a successful and interesting play-one where everything comes out right in the end. 69 Senior Will the meeting please come to order? Promptly at 7:30 the first and third Monday of every month the Senior Girl Reserves hold their meetings. At the beginning of each meeting devotions are read by various members of the club, then the secretary calls a roll of over sixty girls. Committee reports are given and it is through these committees that the years program is carried out. Creating a friendly spirit among the younger girls in the school was the job of the service committee. Through the efforts of the social com- mittee the girls again held a formal dance W-hich for many years had been discon- tinued. During the Christmas holiday season a potluck Was enjoyed by every- one. The last social function and last meet- ing of the year was a farewell picnic at Brookside Park. The program committee planned an ex- cellent calendar for the year concerning life after graduation. Through such speak- ers as Mr. Ballou, Mr. Gorsuch, Mr. Dallas, Miss Amstutz, and Mrs. Mosher, problems of the home, marriage, college, professions, and the World were explained and dis- cussed. In addition to the above, the tra- ditional Easter Assembly was planned by the committee and it was a job Well done. Members of the music committee lead the girls in singing Follow the Gleam at the close of each meeting. The Words of this beautiful hymn express perfectly the purpose behind the Girl Reserve Club. The social activities reached their height in February when the girls joined with the Senior Girl Reserves and held a formal dance. A box social, Christmas party, and a farewell picnic were among the year's festivities. The program begins with the traditional candle light procession of all the members. All these things help the Iunior Girl Re- serves in reaching toward the best. V16 ' Quiz. Organized around the same standards and pur- poses as those of the Senior Club, there are thirty members in the organization. These fortunate freshmen and sophomore boys enjoy game nights, round-table discussions, feature speakers and poi- lucks. Throughout the school year they try to carry' out their ideals of clean living, clean speech, clean scholarship, and clean sportmanship. On February fourth, many of the fellows attend- ed the annual Hi-Y-Koda Klub Formal held in the boys gym. 41 PATROLMAN RIGGLE SPEAKS 78 , Koda Klub Eat, drink, Cmilk, that isD and be merry is the second motto of the Koda Klub. The first and by far the most important is: To create a friendly attitude and a spirit of cooperation among the boys and to train its members to be of service to the school and community. However, aside from guarding and selling at foot- ball games, helping to put up and take down elec- tion booths in the spring, and conducting round tables for personal betterment, the boys find plenty of time to throw numerous potlucks throughout the year. The Koda Klub and Hi-Y formal dance held in the Spring is the most important social event on the program. PROFESSOR GUBITZ SPEAKS The College Club Was started when a group of girls met in their home rooms to discuss the prob- lems encountered when entering college. Soon the club was organized and held two regular meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. This last year the membership, which includes only Iuniors and Seniors, reached a grand total of eighty-one. The club enjoyed and appreciated the guidance given by representatives from the numer- ous colleges and universities throughout the state. These talks were concerned chiefly with the cur- riculum, activities, tuition, and advantages of their respective schools. Each member is interviewed privately by the ad- visor, Miss Franz, in order to help him select the school which best fits his needs: Applications for entrance are then sent to the selected school. 86 l 1 FIRST HOW: Ioan Ogborn, Bonnie Emmons, Bonna Dean Anders, Rita McManaway, Helen Hess. These games include soccer, hikes, volleyball, basketball, recreational sports, and soft- ball. Despite aching muscles, bruised shins, and jam- med fingers this club provides healthful recreation for any girl in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Three times a year A awards are presented to those girls who have succeeded in earning six hun- dred points. To have an A is the ambition of every girl. For the most, this award means five years of hard work, but this is forgotten when at last you walk down the hall with an A on your sweater. They were lowered even more when first string fullback, Howard Fackler, broke his ankle in a pre-season scrimmage. In their first game, with Willard, the A's were edged 7-6. A week later mighty Fremont thumped them 28-7. Canton South followed with a 33-O victory and Sandusky then took the field, winning 34-6. The next game was a bright spot for the A's as they ran over Shelby 26-O for victory number one. The next three games proved to be disastrous as they were downed by Wooster, 34-61 Marion, 19-75 and Oberlin, 7-O. In the latter the A's were hampered greatly by a driving rain. Determined not to end the season with only one victory they edged Galion in the final game 20-19 after trailing 7-19 at the half. Regardless of their record of two wins and five losses for the season, the I. V.'s have produced some promising material for next year's varsity. The squad consisted of nineteen freshmen and fourteen sopho- mores. The sophomores will be used for re- serve strength on the varsity next year and a few of the better players will be used to replace the seniors who graduate this year. Finishing the season with fourteen wins and one loss, the I. V.'s turned in one of the best records in Ashland High School history. During the season they compiled a total of 655 points While holding their opponents to 484 points. This is Coach Rampe1t's second year with the I. V. squad. During these two years his teams have won 25 games while losing only 8-a record which will be difficult to surpass. The Iunior A's only setback this year came, after ten straight victories, at the hands of the Mansfield I. V.'s, 48-28. The little A's had previously beaten Mans- ield, 35-28. The I. With the handicap of Very little experience dogging them most of the season, the team didn't finish with such a good record as far as winning games is con- cerned. However, all the boys had ct very good time playing and learning the fundamentals of baseball, which is what really counts. Whether we shall be on the winning or losing side of the ledger is un- certain. The record books show two wins, two losses, and a second place in a triangular meet. There is one thing, however, which is certain. This edition of the A's will have its share of record holders. Dick Haiiner has already broken the discus record twice, and several others have almost been broken. This year Coach Taylor has been stressing relays considerably, because the A's lack a standout dash man. The distances are fair, but their strong point is field events. As the season progresses the A's will probably grow stronger since several key men reported late, and because nine lettermen are returning from last year's successful team.
