Longley, who as coach and in- structor has upheld the best traditions of Ash- land High School, probing himself to be a good friend, an inspiring teacher and a wise coun- sellor, we the senior class of 1940 do gratefully dedicate this book. 2 1 INTIQUDIJCTIDN At the last moment seniors find a feeling of regret at leaving their schooldays. Thus it was with the seniors of 1940. So, being unusual people, they did an extraor- dinary thing. The entire graduating class mobbed Father Time, stole his scythe, and chased him up a tree. This made it possible to daydream a bit-to recreate happy memories of school life. Father Time, in despair, thought maybe he could hasten things a bit even if he was helpless otherwise. So he hastily scribbled mem- ories on the leaves of the maple in which he was be- seiged and dropped them to the seniors dreaming be- low. The leaves fell-one by one . . . - A f u v x V, f . rl ii 5 X 2 if? if 3? Lersch-Clerk C W Freer Mrs. J. Allen Miller R R Teeter J. L. Grindle Absent E. Koehl-V. Pres. Congratulations to the Class of 1940 of the Ashland High School for having produced for all concerned an interesting and inspiring record of our school with particular emphasis on senior class activities. You have been learning by doing. You have been taught that there is no Bowery-beds-of-ease way to successful accomplishment. You are aware of the fact that the world is today looking for people who have something to offer besides brawn. Keep your mental windows open so that you may sense the way your abilities should take you and then go that way with all of the resources at your command. Our best wishes go to every one of you. May you be a credit to your school, your par- ents, your friends, and yourselves. J. E. BOHN Superintendent Congratulations Members of the Class of 1940: You have at last reached that long sought goal. You have the distinction not only to be members of the largest class to be graduated from Ashland High School, but also to be graduating at a time when life everywhere is interesting and challenging. Lifels report card is concerned with your success, in whatever your work may be, only insofar in attaining that success you have been of service to your fellow man. In fact, few people ever obtain even marked financial success until they are so interested in a work of service that profits are forgotten and take care of themselves. It is my hope that as a result of your ex- periences in Ashland High School, each of you will be a good citizen and that democ- racy will be a way of life for you. For each of you there is a place and I wish that you find that place in life that is best for you. In the words of Victor Hugo, My idea is this: ever onward. If God had intended that man should go backward, he would have given him an eye in the back of his head. ,ff DUI? DDI CIIDAL- - SIDEAIYS. . . T0 HIS SECIQETAIQY T0 THE FACULTY MISS MCMILLEN... Four years of new experiences, new difliculties, new enjoyments, and new friendships have molded us into more tolerant and understanding people. Our class was rich with varied interests and filled with the desire to succeed. We have had many hopes and goals that have been realizedg others never materialized and were forgotten or replaced. Many who entered four years ago have been unable to weather the hardships and setbacks along the paths they had chosen and conse- quently took a substitute. Others survived defeat with ever mounting endurance and went on to success in what they chose. Laughingly we can now look back to the time when we were freshmen trying so desperately to make ourselves at home, or to our sophomore year, when the shocking revelation was made that high school was no snap. Then came our junior year, which was everything we had anticipated and more. Now the senior year-bigshots in the halls we had timidly trod as freshmen. Of all years this was probably the most pro- ductive and beneficial to ourselves and others. In this year we have crystallized and obtained the polish that only a senior year can give. And so we leave with beautiful memories and the confidence of success as we look to the future equipped with in- dispensable experiences and strength of character. If we finish the Education Sweepstakes, we get first prize, an education. So far we, the junior class, are ahead with a heavy surge of strength still behind us. Whenwe entered the big race, we were just youngsters unknowing of the hardships and joys we should find. Rac- ing through the straightaway, rooms 106, 107, and 108 taught us the lay ofthe track. This year we tried desperately to be like the older runners. Although the effort cost much difiiculty, we ran close behind the leaders. After all these experiences we finished the first lap, knowing more than we had and having more determination to succeed. In the second lap we knew some technique and pushed ahead of the new members. Although we all worked to- gether, some of our runners began to stand out. Scholarship, music, and athletic runners were already developing repu- tation as good sports. We worked hard and strengthened ourselves for what was ahead. Time had dragged for us with the yearning to be three year olds. Now we were genuine runners with two years' experience, but older runners began to give us competition. They initiated us into this race in real style. That didn't bother us. We kept running and began to edge them out for the honors. Our athletes were taking over, and the musicians and scholars were winning high honors. Now we were build- ing up our reputation. The only difficulty was that the longer we ran, the faster the race went. Enjoyable times as well as troubles raced by. It was evident that we must make a noticeable gain for the final sprint. Some of the older racers were dropping out, and we were becoming leaders. We had reached the halfway mark together and now must set an example for newcomers. Finally, we were the leaders. We met new runners and old ones too. Our acquaintances helped us to move faster. We had set our goal and were striving toward it. We had many enjoyable times, although this was supposed to be the stiffest race of all. We initiated the new runners as we had been initiated. How much fun it was to be a recognized runner in the race. This lap ended sooner than we had expected. Could it be that we were nearing the finish of the race we loved so much? We planned that we might leave our names in the annals of the race track. We entered the fifth and almost the last lap of the race. During this lap we again excelled in our leadership. This lap went the most rapidly of all. Now we finish the fifth lap and look back on all our pleasant experiences as green- horn runners, three year olds, and now leaders. Today we must take time to show our appreciation to the others who may have helped us. We have lived up to the standard which we set when we entered the race and have had a successful trip around the track. Now it's up to us to plan for next year when we must finish the race. Next year look for us in the Educa- tion Sweepstakesf' which we, the present Junior Class of Ashland High School, are destined to win. Tom Bowdle pa... 'P 6, 1' ix 'CN cn. qw 1.-f 'T' 'i? .. In the fifteen years that he has been here, he has become an integral part of the school. During the time he has served, Mr. Grindle has worked under three superintendents: Mr. McDowell, Mr. Bowsher, and Mr. Bohn. When he came, the auditorium and two wings had not yet been added to the building. He has made many friends, and more than one person will miss his familiar face around the school book store. We hope Mr. Grindle will enjoy the free- dom of his retirement after so many years of contining work. GIIQL if Since we must lose there is someone who can till his place so ably as Mr. Lersch. We are all acquainted with Mr. Lersch because he is no stranger to Ashland. He graduated from Ashland High Sqhool in 1925 and then from Ashland College in 1929. Since 1929 Mr. Lersch has been teaching at the high School. He taught general science in the eighth grade, and then was promoted to assistant principal. From that oflice he was transferred to his present ofhce of clerk. Mr. Grindle, we are happy that IQESEIDVI USHEIQS 000' 1. He broke the NCO scoring rec- ord with 163 points and the high school record with 260 points. Vince was captain of this year's basketball team. This year the basketball team won third place in the NCO league. Besides Vincent Barr, there were several other team members who deserve high praise. Bob Howell was a very good guard, excelling in one hand shots. Bob Atterholt astounded onlookers by his accuracy on long shots. Bob Howell made the NCO second team, and Bob Atterholt got honorable mention. The team is losing Vincent Barr, Bob Atterholt, Bob Bedwell, Rex Benton, Marshall Mumaw, and Bob Ward. Three letter men, however, will return to carry the heaviest responsibility. These are Dean Duffy, Bob Howell, and Tom Bear. In the tournament the team won the first game with odds against them. In the second game Ashland surprised everyone by losing by only four points. Until the last few minutes the chances seemed about even, but then Bellevue scored two baskets. Nevertheless, this year the basketball team has seen one of its best years. Jack Spellman, Paul Fortney This year the jun- ior varsity basketball team won 17 games and lost only l. Mr. Buckner, the coach, moulded together a group of players who had excellent team- work. Their strong- est three antagonists were Mansfield, Mar- ion, and Sandusky. They defeated Mans- iield and then lost at Marion. The boys still grieve that Pete Risser could not play at Marion because of an injury. They play- ed an exciting game at Sandusky, triumph- ing in the end. Philip Stentz and Jim Shull were both high-scor- ing forwards. Center, Pete Risser, was cap- tain of the team and provided real back- bone. Ralph Hurst and Bob Semple, guards, played a good defensive game. The coaching of Mr. Buckner and the team -work of these boys explain the splendid record of this year's junior var- sity. 88 The Junior Varsity snapped into form this year to win the N. C. O. championship. The boys won against Marion, Mt. Vernon, and Galiong and pounded Shelby back for 69 yards to win a touch- down and tie the score. The lost by only one point to the Wellington varsity team and scored against Mansfield, although they lost the Mansfield game. Coach Buckner is largely responsible for this year's success. Harold Maxheim- er, captain, excelled with Tom Wiley at making holes for plunges. Dean Duffy, halfback, was good at punting and passing. Francis Smith and Eugene Beymer could catch pass- esg and Don Darr, Bill Wagner, and Pete Berry were the end run stars. These were not the only outstanding players, but the excellent standards of all the boys combined to make a real team. tl. V.
