O0 of llfg, chapterl ln the fall of 1939 we the graduatlng class of 1936 having completed an Introduction turned the page and started the first chapter of our Book of Llfe Now agaln ready to turn a page this tame to start a different chapter of our book we pause to take a fnnal look at our furst chapter the frrst and most lm portant the foundation of the others that will follow The fnrst few pages deal wuth our trials and trnbulatlons as Freshmen There amldst blots and frnger marks are accounts of our frrst adventures IH hugh school among new classmates and teachers There were the tradltlonal lnltratrons which were none the less real and meanjngful to us It IS true that we were a llttle green and tlmld at frrst but our wlllrngness to work and our enthuslasm over our work more than made up for our lack of experrence Who of us can forget the Inner terror we expernenced when we went to the l.atln and the Algebra classes for the first few days or the relief we felt when we found that these subjects were not the utter lmposslbjlltaes that we had expected? When we had secured a good grrp on our lessons, some of us turned to the actjvltles of the hrgh school for further beneflt and enjoy ment We were exceedingly proud of the honors that our members brought home from scholarshjp music and speech contests Now that we have ourselves fnrmly establlshed ID Ashland Hugh School antlcrpatnng new and different things, we shall skrp the uneventful days of our hrstory and come upon the story of our Sophomore days which were more full and eventful than those days preceding At this time we encountered Caesar and Euclid, who are still causing the downfall of many pupils but who drd not prove so disastrous Most of us passed them wjthout mishap Now we reach the point where the story takes a deflnlte shape, the part whlch contains the more Interesting and memorable events of our history We fnnally attanned the exalted posrtlon of Juniors By thus trme we had become the nucleus of the various organrzatlons and actnvltles of the hugh school and were becoming more and more a part of the soclal llfe The class of 36 was really organlzed as such during this year The class offlcers were elected and advnsers were chosen Rrngs and puns were Under the guidance of our capable leader Edgar Koehl Jr we launched a drive to rarse money Qur chref source of funances and lncrdentally the occaslon for our dramatic members to drsplay thelr talent was the Junior Class play Three Cornered lVloon, a highly amusing comedy This play was very well produced and presented to a most appreclatlve audrence The receipts of the play went toward fjnanclng our brg social functron the Junior Sensor Prom, whlch was quite successful even to the point of pleasing the Senrors Qur attempt to paper the boys gym ID an effort to transform It Into l.lttle Amerlca was not all that was deslred as the paper simply would not stay Intact and continually dropped off The scholastic slde of our program succeeded well too ln the thrrd year of our endeavor, we mastered French and Spanrsh and undertook the fascrnatlng but odorous subject of chemistry Our representatives to contests stnll contrnued to wan honors We were very proud of our boys who worked for the glory of Ashland Hugh School on the grrdsron and the court Qur Junror year passed so swlftly that It seemed no time at all untll we came to the few remalnnng pages on which to lnscrlbe out last rem ,rks As we reached our fnnal year we took on a new dlgnlty and took ourselves quite seriously as befnts a Senror We found that clubs social actlvltles, athletic competltnon and honor and scholarshjp seeklng took almost more tnme from our lessons than we could spare, but there was no shlrkrng our duties With Clay Donges as a most able leader, we carried on the business of our class For a class play we presented the popular comedy Growing pains and then prepared ourselves for the honor stretch We clalm the dlstlnctron of bejng the fnrst class In Ashland l-llgh School to graduate an caps and gowns We have found them most uniform and effective We have now fnlled the space allotted for our fnrst chapter There remains nothlng more for us to do but to go out to seek more maternal for future chapters IU our Book of Life Frances Griggs . 1 I I .
