A PLEA FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF OUR SCHOOL GROUNDS In compiling the record of this year's advance- ment we should not neglect mention of the improve- ment in our school grounds. A coating of blacktop has been put on a large space at the front of the building, a flag pole founda- tion has been built and curbs have been made at the sides. The lawns have been even and seeded. We are grateful to the Rotary Club which has planted a row of pines on the west side which will someday provide shade. We also give thanks to the Telephone Company for the shrubbery, and to the people who planted it along the curbs. You will agree that these improvements add much: however, this is only a start. I would be nice if some trees were planted on the lawn behind the school building. Climbing vines could also be planted in various places around the gymnasium to relieve the bare appearance it now has. Hedges might be planted by the south end entrance and along the road on the west side of the building. The road going around the building does not have pavement and becomes rutted in the spring. Tarring this would be an added improvement. The large field behind the building could be surveyed and graded into a baseball diamond, and two softball fields, one for the girls and one for the boys. lf these were built, practice would be much more convenient, time would be saved, and all our activities would be concentrated at the school. There is also room in the field for a tennis court, a track course. pole vault pit, and other facilities for sports. Ezra Libby ACHS SPORTS Cross Country - We won the Aroostook Champion- ship for the second straight year. Our fine team brought home Ashland victories in all our Aroostook County meets this year. Winter Sports - Our winter sports began late this year due to poor snow conditions. The schools which we compete with are: Fort Kent, Caribou, Madawaska and Stearns. We won second place at the Caribou meet, first at Fort Kent, and are looking forward to further victories. Basketball - The Varsity Basketball season started with a new coach, Ralph Baxter, in charge. Their first game was with the faculty team over which the Varsity won an easy victory. Their first chance at actual playing and getting acquainted with the competition that they would have throughout the season was at the Round Robin at Easton. There Ashland won a victory over Mapleton. Throughout the season the Ashland boys have slowly battled their way to five victories out of sixteen games. Under Coach Grant the Junior Varsity passed a good season considering their competition. They played fourteen games, winning seven. During the season, several boys were discovered who should bolster the Varsity next year. Baseball - Our baseball team will have slight changes this year due to the fact that we have a new coach, Ralph Baxter. We have a turn out of thirty boys for baseball but the positions these boys will play is not certain because the coach has not yet worked with them. We do expect Ashland to have an up and coming baseball team this year. Sheldon Casey

Senior 611155 flistary In the fall of 1952, a group of uncertain students began their long journey through high school as Freshmen. Mr. Charles Partridge and Mr. Verne Byers were our advisors and prevented us from straying from our path. We chose Betty Casey as our President: Chrystal Craig, Vice President: Leah Bragdon, Secretary: and Gladys Cote, Treasurer: Donald Prue and Sally Baxter represented us in Student Council. Freshman Reception was soon upon us and we were forcibly initiated and became full fledged high school members. Our largest money-making activity was the Freshman's First Dance. Before we knew it, June came and we happily put away all thoughts of school for the summer, We returned in 1953. ready to resume our studies. Ralph Baxter and Burton deFrees be- came our new advisors. We elected Earle Weaver as President: Sonja Reed, Vice Presi- dent: Chrystal Craig, Secretary: and Sally Baxter, Treasurer: Dana MacDonald and Gladys Cote were sent to Student Council. Because of the resignation of Gladys, Chrystal Craig was elected as her replacement the latter part of the year. The big task of sponsor- ing Freshman Reception proved a real success. Again June came and we were ready to enjoy our vacation. We came back to school in 1954 as Juniors, realizing a big year ahead of us. With this thought in mind, we chose Dana MacDonald, President: Sally Baxter, Vice President: Carlene Fleming, Secretary: Earle Weaver, Treasurer: and Sonja Reed and Sheldon Casey, Student Council members. In November of 1954, some of our classmates became members of the National Honor Society. In an assembly, Earle Weaver, Chrystal Craig, Sally Baxter, and Dianne Drew were selected. During the early part of 1955. we pre- sented two plays, I Remember Mama and Mississippi Melody, under the direction of Mr. deFrees. In April, Junior Exhibition was held, with ten students participating. Earle Weaver and Chrystal Craig received highest honors while Norman St. Peter and Patricia Pelletier were named second place winners. Earle further proved his speaking ability by winning first place in the Central Aroostook League Speaking Contest, Boys' Division. In May, the long awaited Junior Prom was held. The gym was decorated in delicate spring colors and received the admiration of all present. Another summer lay before us and we anticipated the day when we would become Seniors. We assembled for our final year in 1955, by electing Dana MacDonald, President: Earle Weaver, Vice President: Sally Baxter, Secretary: and Leah Bragdon, Treasurer. Sheldon Casey and Sonja Reed represented us in Student Council, with Sheldon as President and Sonja, Vice President. November marked the addition of Melvin Gragam, Sonja Reed, Gladys Cote, Leah Bragdon, and Evelyn Soucier to the National Honor Society. We soon began the tremendous task of producing the Echoes of ACHS. Sally Baxter was selected as Editor of this project. In December, under the direction of Mrs. Rose Tilley, we presented, 'Curtain Going Up, a comedy, which was very favorably received. In February, Sally Baxter was elected by the faculty to represent ACHS as the annual DAR Candidate. In April we journeyed to Quebec City for our Senior Class Trip. We leave our high school days behind, our motto, Seize the Opportunity, uppermost in our minds. Although each of us goes his own way, we will often think of one another and of our experiences at Ashland Community High School. Chrystal Craig
