Panthers Win Own Tourney Ashland's seventeenth consecutive invita-I Chandlerville and New Berlin ended the tional tournament vvas one of the most suc cessfully managed and exciting in many years Opening the first round of play on Mon day at 2 30 Chambersburg du iped a big Chapin five 33 15 Ending the afternoon play Franklin nosed out Chatham 23 21 Plains walked on Modesto 27 12 in the first game of session tvvo Waverly ended the first day of the tourney bv trouncmg Mu1 rayville 33 19 Chandlerville came from benmd to tame Palmyra in the first game of the lower bracket Tallulas reserves performed most of the time to romp over an inexperienced Meredosia quintet 43 14 An improved Virginia five opened the second night s session against Bath by scoring an unexpected win over Bartholomews bas keteeis 31 29 in the last minute of play Perlm won a thrilling contest from Mt Sterling 32 25 to finish the first round of play On Wednesday night at 7 30 Waverly eliminated Pleasant Plains 52 17 to begin the quarter finals Chandlerville topped Tallula 21 13 to qualify for the semifinals The Panthers played for the first time 1 the tourney to tame Chambersburg 45 18 A capacity crowd witnessed Thursday nights games New Berlin defeated Vlr glnia and Ashland overcame Franklm 34 17 Semifinal play started Friday night with the four follovving teams remaining in the tournament Ashland Waverly Chandler ville and New Berlin ASIIL XND W AVFRLY IANGLF ported that the Waverly Ashland battle was one of the outstanding games played in Central Illinois this year The score never varled over six points du mg the vvhole game and the Panthers vvere tn top at the gun 26 22 Ashland s quintet took a 6 3 lead the first frame and were in the drivers seat from thls time throughout the contest At the half vvay intermission the score was 15 12 1n favor of the home team and 22 18 begin ning the last period both teams tallied four points the fourth quarter Robinson vvas the big gun vvith 10 points semifinals on Friday night with an excit ing and very close game Berlin out scored Chandlerville by three points the last hall LAST NIGHT OIF PLAY IS UNEVEN Chandlerville hit from all angles against Waverly in the consolation game to gain third place by a score of 38 30 The Comets got away with a fast start and vvere never overcome Ashland ended the annual affair by as tonishing a full house with a 35 9 victory vvhile a tight defense held New Berlin with out a field goal The score read Ashland 17 Berlin 2 as the Panthers retreated to the locker room at the half Berlin was held scoreless the third frame and each team scored seven points apiece in the last heat Qumley found the hoop for 19 points Principal Pittman presented the trophies after the final game Bob Aggertt receiv ed the first place trophy for the Panthers Sullivan stepped forward to be awarded second prize for New Berlin Harper high point scorer of the tournament and Chand lervilles representative vvas presented the third place trophy Waverly earned the right by the conduct of the players and the crowd also to take home the sportsmanship trophy Captain Morris was presented this trophy ASHLAND T Qumley D Aggertt Robinson Mau Lynn Mullen Iv PW BERLIN Sullivan Hurmis Marr Bergschnelder Page Roach Shuff F T 0 Thirty Five ' , .
