Ashland Nlne Has Bug eason The Ashland hrgh schools 1938 baseball season was one of the most successful dra mond performances for A C H S rn many years The local nrne won nme out of ten games rn the past season and the Lrttle Srx con ference champronshrp trophy Athens hrgh defeated the Panthers for the only set back rn the conference and the entrre season The Lrttle Srx conference baseball trophy was the frrst trophy ever to be won rn baseball competrtron by A C H S Past records do not rndrcate the accomplrshment of thrs feat before lN1neteen dramondeer performers reported at the frrst call for practrce on September 1 Four letter men were left behrnd from last years squad to carry on A C H S s dutres on the playrng freld Glenn Qurn ley last years fly catcher rn center drrfted rn from the green pastures to glrde off the mound wrth a most successful season Glenn won srx games whrle Drck twrrled two games and lost one Robrnson resumed play rn the hot corner for the thrrd con secutne year and Lefty Aggertt was still roamrng around frrst for the fourth season Three newcomers completed the lme up for the rnfreld Rlakeman was on the recervrng end and exhrbrted great performances through out the season Mau crrcled sec ond base wh1le Caswell s hrttrng and freld rng as a short stop strengthened the Pan thers Left freld was well occupred by Bob Qurnley whrle Lynn covered rrght Danen be ger worked seven and one half rnnlngs behrnd the plate and drd 2752 frames of utrlxty work rn the outfrelds Mullen the local s left hander saw duty two full games on the knoll, wrnnrng both contests The season was opened at Ball townshrp hrgh school wrth an 18 12 vrctory beneath a blrsterrng sun Mau led the attack wrth three hrts and Mullen allowed the opponents srrc srngles Thrs game taught the Panth ers much and helped toward a successful season Ram Halts Panthers Lanphrer became the second v1ct1m of the Panthers rn an 8 1 scrap after a heavy downpour had halted the contest rn last half of the second rnnrng Members of the local baseball squad were astonrshed at the dra mond on whrch the game was played The contest was staged at Washrngton park on the frnest dramond ever played on by any four Vear member of the team Drck Ag fertt went the route holdrng the opponents hrtless Ashland was off to a good start wrth frve hrts The Panthers returned to the local dra mond for the frrst home game on September 16 and trampled Easton 23 4 for a confer ence wm Glenn Qurnley prtched wh1le Caswell smashed out four hrts, one berng a homer Wlxoms lads recerved 23 hrts The second home game was agarnst Alex ander wrth a 17 5 vrctory Ten runs were tallred rn the flfth rnnlng by the locals wh1le Qurnley set back the foes wrth three brngles n seven frames xof play Athens Is Onlv Vrctorrous Team The largest crowd to attend a local hrgh school baseball game durrng the year turn ed out to wrtness Ashlands one and only set back of the season Athens tallred frve runs the frrst two frames to trrp the Panth e s rn a 9 6 contest A three run rally by the Ashland crew rn the frfth rnnrng fell hort after lynn and Drck Aggertt ground useful hrts wh1le Ashland connected for Clgllt A. rally rn the thrrd frame helped the lanthers to a 12 4 vrctory over Petersburg rn September 28 B Aggertt led the hrtt rs behrnd Qurnley s frve hrt twrrlrng Fraughoer s baseballers came through wrth hree hrts and two runs rn the last half of the seventh Thrs vrctory was number two wrn rn the Lrttle Srx conference Late lnmng rallres saved the they were vrctorlous 7 3 over 'tlullen turned rn hrs second wrn on on the opponents dlamond was the second contest played ander locals and Alexander of the sea Thrs game wrth Alex Imal Game Cmches Conference The Panthers matched dramond abrlrtres agamst Greemrew and opened the month of October wrth a ln 4 conference vrctorv G Qurnley stopped the rrvals wrth four hrts whrle team mates collected 16 brngles B lContmued on Followmg Pagel Tw enty IN me l I . , . . .
