CLASS PROPHECY OF 39 I am slttlng at my desk under Pxttman s nose 1n the Ashland study hall makmg a man sxzed attempt to concentrate on my Enghsh lesson w1th a very reallstlc ladxes axd sess1on on my r1ght In a last desperate effort I bury my head ln my book and am soon lost ln Henry Dav1d Thoreaus hterary creatlon, Walden I always fancled myself hav1ng a cabm ln the woods on the shore of a lake as Thoreau has 1n Walden, far far away from the hectlc hfe of the Ashland hlgh school and those prodlglous Englxsh asslgnments The ladles ad sess1on grows to a sllght whlsper and soon d1m1n1shes entlrely as dusk gathers around my sohtary cabln on the lake As dark ness settles around me the moon peeps over the pmes on the oppos1te shore and 1n thxs quletude, I begm to dream The moon emerges from the pmes nts rays send a sllver path across the lake dlrectly toward me and my mlnd veers from the present to the long hard years of the future I seem to see my classmates and faculty of the old A C H S approachmg on thls sllvery path as they wlll be ln the years to come Leadmg the parade IS a busy f1ll1ng statlon attendant, located ln Tombstone, Arlzona none other than my old classmate Bob Aggertt A dark gxrl IS next I am not surprlsed to fmd W1lma Anderson She xs hap plly marned and IS havmg trouble wlth her eldest son Walter Lee II He has the hablt of walkmg out west of town every weekday ex enlng for seemlngly no reason at a Next I see a man so comely that he m1ght be taken for a woman It IS Bern Benjamln He IS runnmg a dalry products factory and speclallzes 1n a b1g cheese Heres my old fr1end Les Blakeman Blake has become a carpenter 1n the Sa hara Desert and bullds a very Sp8Clal two car garage A successful look1ng producer was next to tread the sllvery pathway Although hls speech was somewhat hmdered by the presence of a huge stogle 1n h1s large faclal aperture It IS stlll sounded somewhat luke a typhoon meander1ng across the waters Thxs rather breezy gent IS none other than my old sxde klck Bud Caswell, producer of the 1nternat1onally famous Caswell Follles As Bud blows past me a gentleman who loooks rather muslcally 1ncl1ned approach es me I should have guessed It he was Sld Campbell He dldnt have much time sand he had to get back to h1s work rmgmg the three chxmes between programs over Ashlands foremost radxo and televlslon statlon P U N K The next person seemed to be takmg h1S tlme Very unusual I thought when I learned he was Wack Johnson, turned WPA worker I notlced on hxs shovel a unlque Slttlng attachment of wh1ch he Sald he was the lnventor and from Wh1Ch he expected to make m1ll1ons A member of tl1e fa1r sex next approaches my humble lake shore It IS Emma Jean Pnce an old classmate Her pos1t1on IH busmess IS that of asslstant postage stamp hcker for Sears 8.1 Roebuck The lady next approachlng me walks wlth the llght, a1ry tread of a dancer Anna Mae Bryant or1g1nator and star performer ln the latest creatxon the Feather Dance The lady succeedmg the feathery personage gnves me lmmedlate knowledge of her pos1t1on as a housewlfe Who but Shmny Logan She tells n1e she made a well meant effort to become a career glrl but succumbed to the successful wooxng of Wack to whom she was haopxly marr1ed A rather cornulent lady IS next to be 1nterv1ewed Rlta Wankel by name She I learn 1S a pancake baker for a Iworthwestern lumber company She once baked flapgacks for the Champxon of flapjack consumers and he llked her art so well that they were happlly marr1ed She saxd she could bake a pancake ln almost any shape known to the culmary professxon but couldnt compare wlth the outlandlsh examples of the lowly pancake to be found perched on the heads of modern women A man w1th extlemely long ha1r wh1ch had been dyed black was next to approach me He was Jack Robmson only he had substxtuted off for the last three letters of h1S name and was billed over all stage screen and radlo appearances as Robmoff composer of operas and worlds flnest Vl0llYll'St I was shocked at such a drastlc Llex en - .i . . . , . - . . . . . . , ' 1 . . , . . . CLASS PROPHECY OF 39 change, remembermg the blond halred Robmson that used to be the Class of 39 s foremost Jazz addlct A prosperous lookmg bus1ness man next confronts me It IS Bob V1ands who has rlsen 1n the ranks from offlce boy to owner and presldent of a large but and Bolt manufacturmg concern The next 1nd1v1dual has me completely puzzled After mqulrmg as to h1S xden tlty I learn he 1S Elmer Mullen a m1ss1onary who Just returned from the depths of the Afrlcan Jungles A tall lady followed the eccles1ast1cal mdxvxdual She I soon learned, IS Mary Re1ser She was very happ1ly marr1ed to a leadmg Congressman Wexdebottom by name She enjoys Washlngton D C soclety lmmensely and has a speakmg ac qualntance wxth the F1rst Lady A man shouldemng a broom IS next ln the processmon None other than Clarence Copeland who now IS ch1ef Jamtor 1n the Old Ladles home As the l1ne moves on a beauty operator confronts me It IS Jeanette Wankel She sald she operated her own shop 1n Txmbuctu and IS runnmg a spec1al on mud pack for the removal of freckles The couple follovung presented a very sad story Jack W1ll1s and Betty De Weese When Betty, 1nnocent of the consequences refused Jacks proposal Jack en hsted 1n the Fore1gn Leglon for a lxfetxme perlod Betty regrettmg her hasty de mal never wed and became a spxnster Next was a lady whom I haxe no dlfflculty 1n 1dent1fy1ng as Harrlet M1ller She tells me that she was recently marrled and slnce her marrlage has glven up her hob by of catchmg w1ldl1fe because all she had ever been able to catch was one Camp bell fcamelj The tall person followlng could be none but Glenn Qulnley Glenn had glven up trxmmlng heads and chlns to become a travelmg salesman for the Long Green Plckle Works Last but not least was a bug game hunter, better known as Brmg em Back Dead Devlln As I converse w1th h1m I learn that he occaslonally sees John Maurer go mg through Ashland 1n the lower berth of h1s Dr1vate Pullman better known as the rods of a C 8: A boxcar There are a few other straggllng behlnd the mam l1ne the flrst IS Helen Graff who had gnen up her frlends and all other earthly connectlons for a hghthousekeep er on the Galapagos Islands She was followed by a whlte halred and Whlte mustached gentleman who could be no other than George Walker He had crossed a thlstle Wlth a soybean and produced the most dellclous mushroom He was ln mg comfo tablv on the royalty from h1s botanlcal endeavors The mustached gent was followed by a rather large man who had the appear ance of a farmer It IS Mr Ihttman who luns a wery prosperous ost11ch farm 1n Yucatan I learn from h1m that our esteemed fI'19l'lll and coach Gordon Wlxom had run l112.t11fYlOI'l13.l bureau on the Isle of Caprl until the poor fellow dled of apoplexy fol lowlng Melba Reld s unexpected proposal of maruage A waltress follows our dear prmupal and who could It be but MISS Grove who runs the Greasy Spoon hamburger Jolnt 1n the Sandwlch Islands I asked her 1f she had encountered W1mpy and she answered that he hadn t got that far yet Followmg the wa1tress IS a leadmg fxlm actress and comedlenne I am complete- ly dumbfounded when I learn she IS Melba Rexd She says she IS starrmg ln the current cmema attractlon Llfe and Works of Gracle Allen Fndlng the parade IS a nlght club hoste s, none other than Fmma G Dum She IS now s1tuated ln Smgapore Just as the moonht path was agam clear across the lake, unobstructed by human f1gu1es I axxol e to the realism that somethmg hard had hlt me over the head atcompamed by a belllgerent VOICE from behmd Hey Buddy, can the snorm Im tryin ta read I resumed by concentxatxon on Walden To elve . . . . , . . . .
