The Diamonds played well against their opponents but bad breaks led to their downfall in many games. The first game, played at Schuylkill Haven, was a 19-13 loss for the Diamonds. The score was 7-6 at halftime but the Hurricanes came back in the second half to defeat Ashland. Ashland being on the rebound for the next game handed the Ducktowners, Gilberton, a 39-6 setback. Against Kulpmont the Diamonds played their best brand of ball but lost in the closing minutes when a bad pass from center spoiled their drivcg score 18-13. A rainy and muddy night set the stage for Ashland's 37-0 victory over Shenandoah. FOOTBALL The team traveled to Mahanoy City to hand them a 19-6 setback. St. Clair came to the Diamond stronghold and the result was a 7-7 tie. Again a bad pass stopped the Ashland drive from scoring a winning tally on the three-yard line. At Mt. Carmel the Diamonds suffered an 18-7 upset. The Diamonds were in command until the final three minutes, when a fumble gave Mr. Carmel its first score. The next game was played in ice and snow as Frackville tied the Diamonds 6-6. Ashland traveled to Shamokin for the final game where they suffered a 19-0 loss. This was the last game for twelve seniors, including eight varsity regulars. This organization consists of sixty-three mem- bers and is under the direction of Roy P. Steeley. The band participated in many activities gluring our voyage. It provided musical en- tertainment at all football games and was the center of the cheering section. During December the Christmas Concert was pre- sented. The annual Spring Concert had to be postponed due to Mr. Steeley's illness. BAND One of the highlights of the year was on November 24111. Along with many other bands from eastern Pennsylvania this group of young musicians attended the Pretzel Bowl game at Reading where they were entertained, as well as entertaining. Mr. Stecley has done a hne job in pro- moting music appreciation in A.H.S. As a small girl she possessed winning charm and, at the climax of the year, this rising young miss became Junior May Queen. Now, twelve years later, this same girl was chosen to reign over the annual May festivities, when the students of A.H.S. chose Marcia Miller to be their May Queen. 1940 marked the beginning of the class of '52 and on May Day of that year it was noted that various fu- ture seamen graced the small white platform at one end of Memorial Field. The queen, lady-in-waiting, and crown bearer hailed from the 10th St. school building, while mem- bers of the court were chosen from lst, 10th, and 17th St. school. To the right we present you with a picture of how they looked on that day. Reading from left to right they are: Marcia Mulligan, Jane Brassing- ton, lady-in-waiting, John Hurley, crown bearerg Marcia Miller, queeng Kay Romberger, Diane Waldnef, Janet Zerby, and Rosann Hannon. Each year, May Day exercises are built around a central theme. Tnls year's program was held in honor of the mothers, trim exercises, and graceful dances all were executed with practical precision for the en- tertainment of the public. As in previous years, the highlight of the day was the crowning of the May Queen, after which she and her court took their places on the plat- form to view the day's events. Now, on the opposite page we give you our sailor's delights. In the center-Marcia Miller, May Queen. Left to right clockwise: Patricia McLauchlin, Lady - in - waiting. Elinor Trathen.
