RD NTE 1944 HHDHHTE Puhhshed lay We fwahzadhg 675255 Ashland High School, ASh1and,Pa. 7944 V 1 IV LWZWLW GN THE following pages we have attempted to record the outstanding events of our high school days. This has been written by the students in their own wordsg thus the keynote of this book is informality. At times, an atmosphere of playfulness existed, but this was a result of our sense of humor and was all in the way of fun. And then, on the serious side, we believe at this time loyalty to our country is of greatest importance. Therefore, we have placed special emphasis upon patriotism by the building of good citizenship throughout our high school vears. '7 Ji l l 1J 4-n W ...A -y Leo-'H ..-T , LW fvnff Wffyffifi i aka! You are being given the opportunity to live in one of America's greatest crises. You can see history in the making. There have been other critical periods for this country from the very beginning faced great dangers. The republic was born in the midst of a revolution, it was torn by a war between the North and the South and it was tried by numerous conflicts in develop- ing the new territory. However, it survived these threats to become a leading nation in which the ideals of freedom and justice are held dear. America is strong, you must help to keep it strong. A hearty congratulation is extended to you upon completing the program of the Secondary School. People are interested in you and your plans. A helping hand will be extended. Join wholeheartedly in your daily tasks. Respect authority. Recognize opportunity. You will be plac- ed increasingly on your own responsibility to face facts and new condi- tions upon which you must make your own decisions. Your success will be determined on how well you meet your obligations. One of the most difficult problems will be to maintain a reason- able balance between varied interests and demands on your time.Time is never lost that is devoted to work. Blessings go with labor. VVork is ai means of living, but there are times when it is not living. Learn to live easily and gracefully with your fellow men. Strive to grow up socially and intellectually, but above all, spiritually. Man lives by love. joy. hope. faith and spiritual insight. Religion is human spirit, by the grace of God, seeking and finding an interpretaton of life experiences that put sense. worth, dignity. pleasure and hope into life. Religion is indispens- able. To build a life on any other basis is to destroy it. Life's a voyage and he lives long who lives well. XV. R. LECRON. WILHUR R. LECRON Ifn,lD. L. Xu ee It XYe're the Seniors ot' Ashland High 'Four years of study are passing hy . . . From grassy green Frcshies to Sophomores great From sophisticated Iuniors to Seniors sedate. In chemistry lah we boil and huhhle Liquids and hrews that give us trouble Seniors in Spanish find it quite a chore To learn to say, Si, si senior. In German class we write speeches and letters, But the teacher says the juniors are hetter. In typing class we have the goods. WVe sure can handle those Ifnderwoods. 0 In Business Law our members are uwhizzesi' 'Miss Cleaver calls them the Senior udizzesfy Shakespeare makes us writhe and toil And Chaucer causes endless turmoil. XVithout Miss XVeher the Mlu' Bond Committee, VVould have turned out quite a pity, For they were falling very short. Until we, the Seniors, say cd the Fort. Miss Quick had charge of our Senior play, XVith which we were able to make some 'Khayf' ,Twas The Fighting Littlesw . . . in three short acts And it was really funny . . . as a matter of fact. -'sn- to us is a familiar word XYhen we try to sneak out, itis always heard. If yon're caught it means your doom, For you'll spend your time in detention room. If we roar too loud with ha-ha's and hee-hee's, NVe soon hear Miss Strolmieiers If you please . H To our class advisors, Natschke and Pratt, XVC Seniors gratefully tip our hat. Many hoys of our class have gone to war And hefore it's over we'll send lots more. They're doing their duty on land and sea To help speed up that Victory. As far as musical talent goes Our class is really' on its toesl IVe,ve fifteen memhers in the hand And our Music Makers are something grand. Chairman JAMES BENSINGER BARBARA MINNICK ALMA XVEIR GRACE WETZEL H fgfmamfgdzfw FRESHMAN 19-10-1941 Those first memorable weeks of schedule-wrong classroomsw and all the confusion of bewildered freshmen were ours when we en- tered A.H.S. in 1940. VVe had the distinction of being the largest class in the school. We represented Ash- land, Lavelle, Mowry, and Helfen- stein. VVhen we became acquainted we elected our class officers. Presi- dent, Robert Mulligan, Vice Presi- dent, Paul White, Secretary, Jean Leffler, Treasurer, Daniel Snyder, Historian, Jean Heller. We took an active part in Stunt Night and had a representative in both the Thanksgiving and Christmas plays. Just as A.H.S. was becoming famil- iar to us we found ourselves about to enter our Sophomore year. SOPHOMORE 1941-1942 In our second year we felt we knew the ropes a little better. VVe again selected Robert Mulli- gan as our president and elected Daniel Snyder as Vice President, Evelyn Maurer, Secretary, Harry Natschke, Treasurer, and George Pearson, Historian. That year the Sophomores gave the Thanksgiving Play, A Thanksgiving Adven- ture, under the direction of Miss Weber. We then began to realize we were part of A.H.S. The mem- bers who took part in this play were Dorothy Adams, Alma Weir, Dorothea Davison, Rosemary Kle- ponis, Robert Mulligan, George Pearson, Joseph Feeney, Clarence Tabor, and Marie Theresa Farrell. In January we held our first dance. This gave our treasury a much needed start. We inaugurat- ed a new precedent by sending Pollyanna Baskets to classmates who were absent for many days. And time went by! JUNIOR 1942-1943 And now the age of sophistica- tion-our Junior year. Our treasury swelled by leaps and bounds. We had lots of fun at all of our dances but especially at our famous Christ- mas Dance. This year we were also busy selecting and ordering our class rings. Then came our school paper, the Black Diamond, and from the Junior class, fifteen be- came staff members. March found Miss Weber and twenty-six Juniors busily working on the play What a Life ,the smash hit of the season. You didn't forget the Junior Prom, did you? On the night of May seventh. The Hotel Loeper Ballroom held a festive air. The girls lengthened their skirts and piled their hair high and the oppo- site sex donned their best suits. Ivan Faux and his orchestra pro- vided the star dust. Along with our numerous pleasures we took time out to face the responsibilities of our nation at war. We put the Second War Loan Drive over the top with Ashland High School stu- dents buying S4,193.00 worth of stamps and bonds. SENIOR 1943-1944 And now.the home stretch! Under the' leadership of Robert Mulligan, president, Daniel Snyder, Vice President, George Pearson, Treasurer, Jean Leffler, Secretary, Helene Gabel, Historian, we hope to make this a better year. Under Miss Quickis direction our thes- pians gave us The Fighting Lit- tles as our class play. A super production! For awhile We thought we wouldn't have a year book-but here it is! They got busy organizing the project that originated in the American History Class. A governing body of four was elected and christened the 'iBonda- det-rs. The stage was set and production was under way in April 1943 during the United States Treasuryis Second M'ar Loan Drive. Bonds were sold to the tune of S50,000. On two other occasions, the bond salesmen aided the financial success of Uncle Sam's Treasury. To maintain and extend throughout the school and community the high standards of Christian characteri'-our own TRI-HI-Y. To help carry out this motto the club elected Presi- dent, Grace YVetzel, Vice President, Nancy Gearhartg Secretary, Peggy Hardnock, lVorship Leader, Miriam Baurg and selected Miss Cockill as its advisor. Brother to the Tri-Hi-Y is the HI-Y. Senior, Junior, and Sophomore boys swell the ranlls of this organization. They're led by Daniel Sny- der, President, Robert Mulligan, Secretary, and james Bensinger, Treasurer. Mr. XVitchey guides them aright. Music, folk dances, sports events, and happy faces crowd Memorial Field as A.H.S. observes its annual MAY DAY celebration. The climax of the day is the crowning of the senior May Queen by the lady-in-waiting. This year, Grace VVetzel will don the regal robes and Regina Seaner will crown her queen. Another entirely feminine group is the HOME EC CLUB. The members propose: to do something for the community, something for the school, and something for themselves. Of- ficers? Oh. theyire Burleigh Kehler, President, Marie Schilling, Treasurer, and Louise Brecker, Secretary. ATHLETICS are well spoken of in Ashland High. Among the various organizations is the FOOTBALL team which was captained through many victories by Leonard Zataveski . . . Close on the heels of football is BASKET- BALL. Led by Captain Harry Knock, the fleet- footed quintet launched many successful skir- mishes . . . The list would not be complete it BASEBALL were not included. Come spring all eyes tum toward the baseball diamond XX which is the site ot many exciting experiences for both fans and the team . . . Because our athletes must be guided by older and wiser heads we hay c Coaches NVillis Pratt and Llovd Daub . . . CHEERLEADERS-do just as the nalne implies. Those red-skirted girls are at all the schools games bobbing up and down in the tempo oi the cheer. Junior and Senior girls who are members of the GIRLS GYM TEAM spend their meeting periods achieving better coordination, better physical fitness, and better health via dances, games. tumbling, and exercises. The fruits of viewed at the animal Gym held each spring. their labors are Team Exhibition know the P.P.Mfs? They're the the service clubs, an outgrowth of Do you youngest of the Current History Class of '46. P.P.M. is the shortcut for the Patriotic Patch Movement. For identification the members proudly sport patches of various brightly colored bits of ma- terial sewed to their sweaters. These patriotic students also promise to mend, darn, stitch, and patch until their clothes can no longer be worng to huv at least one war stamp a weekg and to have their parents invest the money thus sav- ed in VVar Bonds. And don't forget our ever popular GIRLS CHORUS. It is composed of high school girls under the direction of Mr. Roy P. Steeley . . . Among the music groups in Ashland High are those top notch entertainers, The MUSIC MAKERS, familiar to all the dancers at the school. The orchestra is an organized group with Secretary, Bob Mulligang Treasurer, George Pearson, and Business Manager, Iaclc McConnell .... A mong the organizations Mr. Steeley leads are the school ORCHESTRA and the BAND: the latter resplendent in the richly- colored unifonns of cardinal and navy . . . The two young girls who play the piano for .is- semblies and special occasions are Seniors, Betty Rudy and Marie Teresa Farrell. Mystery, romance, laughter, tears-it's stu- dent thespians at work. These dramatic individ- uals of the Senior Class produced the well-bred amateur theatricals in Ashland High. Since the scene of the play was laid in the office of the principal of Central High Schoolf one encountered the personnel of any such institution plus the faithful and unfaithful following of the afore-mentioned Henry.
