In Elizabethan Writings it was deemed fashionable for the author of a book or a volume of verse to present an argument, Wherein he lay before his readers the reasons for the appearance of the Work. Because this edition of the BLUE AND WHITE is so radically different from its forty-one predecessors, we trust that We may not seem too presumptive if we outline here the background of this volume. There are many ways of approaching the task of reporting the history of a school-year, that task which We assume to be the responsibility of each yearbook staff. For these past forty-one years, BLUE AND WHITE Boards have followed what we like to term the catalog style of presentation. The advantage of this method is its simplicity: it involves no great elaboration of style nor coordination of pictures and copy. On the other hand, its simplicity is also its failing, for far too often the result is nothing more than a report of the fact that certain people were in attendance at the school during that year. That this is limited in its appeal is obvious. In an attempt to overcome this difficulty, the forty-second edition of the BLUE AND WHITE presents a new make-up. We like to think of it as a report in story form of the events of the year. We hope that this will present not only a truer picture, but a more interesting one as well. This idea is a radical departure from the conservative traditions of the past and may heap down on our shoulders coals of fire. Neverthe- less, We trust that this experiment will prove to be a volume well Worthy of the time and effort We have expended in bringing it to publication.
