Waters, D.D. Bishop of Raleigh Leadership, both educational and spiritual is afforded us by our devoted Bishop. Since Bishop Waters took over the diocese in 1945, he has built about forty new schools. Education at all levels re- ceives his constant and diligent attention. In this mission territory the Bishop neglects no means, however small, in his unbounded drive andzeal for the conversion of the diocese. He uses religious and laymen in the apostolate for souls. He takes special interest in the problems of integration. The Bishop invites generous girls to dedicate ayear of their lives to do mission work in the state. Lay- men are trying a new faith reviver, the cursillo. Through Bishop Waters' efforts the spirit of ecumenism is growing in the diocese. He says, lt takes people who are close to Our Lord to convert a missionary area. Herein lies our personal challenge to spiritual and intellectual action. However, His Excellency depends first and foremost on our pastors. To them, we are indebted for their personal interest in Asheville Catholic High and for the spiritual benefits that we derive from their abiding concern to equip us to meet today's challenges. 2 PRlNCIPAL'S MESSAGE My dear Seniors, How quickly the years pass! These four years have slipped by rapidly, and, what once seemed such a long period of time to you has passed before you ljfjilliglegjwit. Matters that once seemed momentous to you have shrunk in im- portance over 'the years. Great plansvof accomplishments that were to be have 15e'eitorg6Eeii'l Much has hapIETiEl iiilltHe'se'yeair's . You have grown up! S ' Ygogiihavelearned that much is accomplished by Time. Wounds are healedg wrongs and sbrfows'afreforgotteng catastrophes are softened. Time, however, is also relentless in its travel. Many of your wonderful intentions have been left un- fulfilled, many chores that were to be done somehow never came into reality. You have learned, I hope, that the present is the time for action. Plansfor the future are valueless unlesswthey some day become realities. Pr'0miSEesQ are worth nothni-gmuntily-V they are fulfilled. P ' Your life in the futurehwil'l'differ' little from that segment of it which you have just completed. Qodhas given each of you ajob to do--one that He has not en- Qpistedgto anyone .else--and He has-given you only one life time in which to do it. The remainder of this life will pass with the same sureness and the same 'swiftness as the past four years. The more you accomplish in the present as ou live it, the rless willpyou ,regret3f5y'5uS'review yearswpast. P ' ' YLq1nr,,,f,ptuf'e, success will ,depend greatly upon the habits and attitudes formed while here at this school. May you always have the wisdom and prudence to ptlace'jprope'r emph'a'si's an all your undertakings, remembering that it profits a man nothing if he gains the whole world and suffers the loss of his soul. Problems of this world shrink to a very small size when compared with the things of God. May you take with you from Asheville Catholic High School the realization that you were created for the service of God and will never be com- pletely happy unless you are fulfilling that purpose. . .All things are passingg God never changesg Patient endurance gains all thingsg Who possesses God is wanting in nothingg God alone suffices. fSt. T eresaj ZZ Z, fi. Rev. joseph A. Kerin 3 E' Wigwam fion President John F. Kennedy 1917-1963 The Seniors dedicate the Lamplighter to the late President of the United States, john F . Kennedy. Under God's providence john F . Kennedy stood before us as an exemplary Christian--as a man chosen not only to guide our nation's destiny, but also to sym- bolize and embody the youthful vigor and moral de- termination of the United States of America. The late President was a great politician, for he entered into public life with the same strength and confidence which characterized all his endeavors. By his election to the presidency, Mr. Kennedy brought our nation a giant step forward towards the achievement of its original commitment to grant equal justice to all men. Having entered into office, he struggled to erase the last disfigurement from the face of America--the denial of equal rights to some citizens because of racial prejudice . john F . Kennedy has been an inspiration to us by his practice of moral courage and his total dedication to American ideals. May the eternal flame be a constant reminder to our class and to all youth of the symbol of true patriotism . . the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans whom he expects to hold high this torch of truth despite apathy and opposition. We shall meet this challenge. 4 at KY ml? MIL Facult in Action In the words of our Holy Father, dedicated teachers shall shine as Father Kerin--Ann Rawding, Lisa Aguirre, Gene Gray, Ronnie Durner Father Kerin, the principal of Asheville Catholic, teaches religion and in his free time makes himself available to the students and teachers for information, conference or for whatever need or problem that they may have. Sister Agnes de Sales instructs Peter Fayssoux, Rita Ledbetter and Bar- bara Evins in the use of the card catalog. 6 Sister Agnes de Sales, S.C.N., librarian and English teacher, brings to her Work the latest methods in the field of grammar and litera- ure. Sister strives to give the Freshmen and Sophomores a firm foundation in English Arts and Skills. Out- sideofclass time, Sis- ter assists and directs students in finding the secrets of the library. Stars for All Eternit The pursuit of foreign languages is the key to many doors of happi- ness . . . above all the ability to meet, know and live in peace with people of other lands. Plan- ning, thinking, listen- ing, speaking, writing, and reading are some of the processes that must be mastered to excelin an active inter- course vvith our neigh - bor. To provoke think- ing the thematic ap- proach in literature is used by Sister Sara Ann in Senior and junior English classes. Lab in action ,i Basque, R.C.E. Father William Wellein Languages demand a great deal of effective teaching and practice. Mother Basque uses many teaching tech- niques and audio -visual aids. Here she moti- vates interest of her pupils in French litera- ture by historic pic- tures. The students have learned to sing, speak, and read French. ,E Sister Sara Ann, S.C.N. 7 Teachers of Science Ptribdftk Elqmqntg lb Sb naunqsqpsq 1. Mother K. Winters, R.C.E. What is the valence of sodium? What's Boyle's Law? These phrases are familiar to all chemistry students. This science really comes alive under the capable instruction of Mrs. Hancock. Biology becomes more and more interesting and ab- sorbing to the Sophomores as they study the living objects of the earth. Sister Columba points out the mysteries of each little cell and its functioning to maintain the Whole. Science courses stress initiative, ingenuity, and research. Under the guid- ance of Mother Winters, the Physics students ex- plore the secrets ofthe atom and space and solve the problems that make good scientists. Mrs. Floyd Hancock Sister M. Columba, R.S.M. 8 Teachers of Skills and Physical Fitness Man must seek eternally to acquire knowledge and apply it with wisdom . Kennedy Could he have been re- ferring to Modern Math, Geometry, and Algebra H7 Sister M. Daniel finds math an interesting sub- ject and a joyful experi- ence vvith diligent pupils. Father MeAvoy Physical fitness is for a strong American youth. Sports develop a spirit of cooperation and good sportsmanship among the team members. The annual field day meets the chal- lenge of those desirous of intramural compe- tition. Mr. Munday can not always count on a victory, but he does expect and gets good sportsman- ship. 9 Sister M. Daniel, R.S.M. For a student, preparing for a ca- reer in the business world, typing is a practical course. Father Mc- Avoy proves to be an excellent in- structor and has drawn many eager students to his classes. i i Coach Munday Lamplighter Staff Mary E. Belz, Advertising, Anita Rix, Assistant-Editorg Jane Brown, Editor, Marsha Lambert, Secretary, Tim Shotwell, Photography, fnot picturedj John Walters, Business Manager. The Lamplighter staff takes up the challenge that our late President Kennedy placed in youth. They catch the torch of light and vision and renew their think- ing and acting so that they might spark the school with their renewal of spirit. The staff chose for the theme of Lamplighter Action, Key to Success. The action designated here is united teamwork of faculty and students in class, in sports, in social activities, in prayer and in every avenue of the Church's work. No man's an island , everyone must share and accept responsibility and regu- late his action in the aspect of living with charity, understanding and generosity. In this attitude, the pictures of the Lamplighter portray Asheville Catholic I-Iigh in action, living, serving, and achieving her goals. 10 SENICRS Ring Symbolism A class ring is not only a beauti- ful band of gold, which compli- ments the wearer's hand, but it is also an emblem which sym- bolizes accomplishments of the student during this period of his life. Scholarship, Loyalty, Fair Play, Ambition, Idealism, and Comradeship are among these accomplishments. Rings, in gen- eral, have a glorious heritage. They are symbols of love, loyalty and affection--symbol of wealth and power. They are a mark of distinction. To the senior, the class ring is an everlasting momento of his high school career. This par- ticular ring was designed by the Class of 1964. It has on the crest a lamp of wisdom and the school seal, with the meaningful Words Fides-Caritas, Virtus-Sapientia. The blue faceted stone set in green gold makes the ring a creation of beauty. Ring Blessing Senior Class Officers Anita Rix Treasurerg Tim Shotwell, Vice-Presidentg Dolores Sparacino, Presidentg Marsha Lambert, Secretary In one of his last radio broadcasts before his death, Pope john XXIII expressed confidence in young people who hold the world's future in their hands. He said, It pleases us to confirm Our paternal confidence in young people who hold the world's future in their hands. Encouraged by lively faith, fidelity to prayer and the interior life, and enriched by the Holy Eucharist, the young know how to give witness, and by example, to carry the doctrine of life to many souls far from God who await this good news eagerly. Bearing wit- ness to Christ's principles is our apostolate, our life. We have the world in our hands ready for action. We have re- ceived these principles from our alma mater and now seek in God a light to guide our steps in certainty of doctrine, in peace of conscience, and in justice and charity extending to every order and sector of human life. 13 MARY ELIZABETH BELZ Belzie Glee Club 1-2-3-4, Cheerleader 3-4, Class Secretary 3, Newspaper 1-2, Pins 'n' Pans 4, Latin Award 2, Annual QAdvertising Editorj 4, National Honor Society 3-4. The administration realizing that the foremost objective of aCatholic education is to grow in holiness and spiritual stature, organized the curriculum around religious activity. The annual retreat, given by Rev. P.j. Gilvary, SJ. was a quiet time during which we were able to ponder the true sense of values and our purpose in life. Each Friday We are privileged to hear Mass and to receive Holy Communion. The Mass provides us with an opportunity to pray for each other and to renew our good intentions to carry out the goals of Asheville Catholic High. We are further blessed to hear Father Kerin's timely remarks on some pertinent theme or virtue each week. Father has arranged a time when we students may go to confession. Reading material and pamphlets on vocational careers are available at all times for interested students. ggi 1, Friendly Advice Peaceful Prayer 26 D ' 1 1 V' 1 1 5 ! This isa dynamic and critical period in the history of our country, and it is necessary that We recognize that an active interest in questions involving the public Welfare is essential. There is no better laboratory for imparting the democratic principles to future leaders than their own organizations--The Student Councils. Student Councils provide the proving ground for young Americans' knowledge, understanding and ex- perience, and a sounding board for their thoughts, Words, and actions . Not only will participation in the Student Councils strengthen our democracy but it will guarantee its success . Students trained in these characteristics set forth more competently to ac- complish their life work in society. This year four from Asheville Catholic High School join the ranks. The Bishop Haid Chapter requires an average of85 in scholarship, the unanimous recommendation of the faculty, and student excellence in service, leadership, and character. Candidates fulfillingthe requirements are received into the societybya solemn induction ceremony. Membership is permanent but failure to meet requirements will result in expulsion. Expulsion from one chapter of the society deters mem- bership in any other chapter. Bishop l-laid Members are expected to bear the flaming torch of truth and to encourage others to follow its light. 43 Music and Arts Mirror Thoughts of the Times 4-:rd 1-1-lg.. A.C.H. Within limits, every studentmay learn to enjoy science and want to further his science education. ln time the students may become useful members of the science community and certainly better-informed citizens. Asheville Catholic High offers four years of science: Physical Sci- ence, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This is the second year the school has participated in a local and regional science fairs. Science is not deadg rather, it is living. Inquiry must be present, answers must be accepted as tentative.
