SIMPSON PRESIDENT The smiling man in the smiling quartet shown above is our president, Thomas W. Simpson. The other photo- genic people in the picture are his wife and his two daughters. While Mr. Simpson's genial expression may not have the bubbling exuberance beaming from the faces of the two charming young ladies seated between him and his wife, his manner is every bit as pleasant while he is at work as it appears in the photograph on this page. And yet, Mr. Simpson is a man who gets things done. He has brought Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute to its present place in the community college system. He has striven constantly for its expansion. His unceasing con- cern and planning for the institution which he heads are evident in the present projected fourth building with all the increased facilities it will house. He has taken part in many statewide activities to further the development of community colleges. As a member of the industrial council of the Chamber of Commerce, he has concerned himself greatly with the expansion of existing industries and with the attraction of new industries to this area. He has been involved in a study of health occupations and with what this institution might do to create programs of training in this field. He has been serving on a committee to implement the new vocational-technical high school facilities for the City of Asheville. His main task, of course, is still to preside over the ever more vigorous functioning of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute. This he does effectively and good-humoredly, a friend to student and staff member alike. IO
