Adult’s experienced wisdom is brought to the level of youth’s questioning motives by his conscious deter- mination to communicate. Minutes are always found for our orange chariots and their drivers, a boy’s service club and projects of service, a council created by and for the youth, and a constant plea for ad- ministrative services. For this and more we respectfully dedicate our 1968 ASH-HI- LIFE to Mr. Ellison C. Magruder. O€edication APPRECIATION Displaying an unusual talent for guiding and instruct- ing students is a person who continually gives of her time and self. In years past, she has been and will continue to be a valuable asset to the students of Asheboro High School. Along with teaching a full schedule of business classes, she has found time to take the many responsi- bilities of a yearbook advisor. This year as well as last year she has been a constant example of hard work to the annual staff. She is able to draw the best work out of everyone she comes in contact with by her subtle nature and optimistic spirit. With great admiration we would like to extend our appreciation to Mrs. Ernestine B. Presnell, our ASH-HI-LIFE advisor. He forgot to watch the clock and began to grasp the essence of the language. Noun declensions and verb conjugations followed and with them came long hours of thought and headaches. One enters Latin with apprehension but exits with strong study habits and an invaluable cultural back- ground. Liprary SERVES AS A SOURCE Of Information Containing numerous books, maga- zines, and audio-visual materials, the Asheboro High School library served as a central information source. Miss Katherine Buie, Mrs. Betty Presnell, and their assistants helpfully guided interested students in their search for appropriate materials. Even though there was a lack of adequate storage space, students and faculty used the facilities to a maximum degree. “Gee, I wish I could read,” sighs Rhonda McGill. It has to be here! zo StudENtS SURPRISED TheMseElLVEs ano their teacher sy Speaking french Within the boundaries of room 203, Madame Smith strove to pound some knowledge of France and its language into the heads of her schol- ars. Although the way was often eased by games, songs, and skits, these students labored through drills, orals, basic sentences, pronouns, and exams just like their Spanish “friends.” When it all seemed hope- less, students surprised their teacher Nepal re finds that French tapes are perplexing . . . thought-provoking . . . but excitingly and themselves by speaking French. lirerent! - a a Steve Covington and Meredith Nichols, two budding French students, learn to eat. 26 Romantic MaorRIO Revealed to Youthful Spaniards ees ee peel peo cen ‘cones nd — oe’ ed ‘wooo eed pone wooo a md “ The Turtle, alias Mr. Jarrett, entertains his Spanish class. 27 For 55 minutes Monday through Friday, 260 students journeyed from the classrooms of Asheboro High School into the midst of the wonders and glories of Spain. Romantic Madrid, sounds of Granada, the beauty of the Pyrenees, and the elec- tricity of the bullfights were re- vealed to youthful Spaniards. And yet, there remained the drudgery of drills, conjugation of verbs, and construction of basic sentences. But surely this was a small price to pay for a trip to Spain. =) Ole GH Ltt YR LPO LOE ILM SAA pi diy It all began with a book. 28 Mike Vuncannon checks Almanac for name of first president. 29 Opportunity FOR SelLf-ExpReEssion Because Americans have been accused of murdering the English language, Asheboro High School seems to be fighting a never-ending battle to atone for this felony. While students studied the structure of the language, they were also given an opportunity for self-expression through creative writing and public speaking. Parallel reading and philosophical discussion stimulated thought both in English and in other courses; indeed, English is an in- tegral part in the curriculum of all students. Self-Examination Made in Numanities Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? Such questions are asked in self examination by each Humanities student this year. Having been in- troduced this year into the Asheboro High School curriculum, the combina- tion of history, English, music, art, and sculpture attracted many sopho- mores. Trips out of town to view plays, dramatiza- tions of obsolete govern- ments, comparisons of an- cient and modern epics, and an analysis of the grand opera Aida high- lighted the activities of this fascinating course. During their three years of high school, students wander through the maze of mathematical terminology from general math to geometry and from Algebra I and II to Ad- vanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Observing this pro- gression of confusion was Miss Nelly Saravia, an Inter- national Exchange Teacher from Peru. — ¥ s oe 3 Saceme Sy re hone fA BS HEE OC mee O ee ® Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry students struggle to comprehend vectors. When the scent of rotten eggs came drifting down the hall, no insults were too harsh for the budding scientists who were responsible for it. Who cared if their lab re- ports were late, or if their equations wouldn’t work? Those students who mutilated poor innocent worms, frogs, and pigs deserved to be confused by physical changes, chemical changes, atoms, and molecules. Why did they bother? As outstand- ing members of the Class of 1968, these gifted stu- dents spent seven weeks of intriguing study, at Salem College. The local delegation included Candy Way and Russell Kilpatrick, who studied English, and Ann Harris, who played French horn in the orchestra. Upon the conclusion of the 1967 session, all three “graduates” agreed that the Gov- ernor’s School is an effective state institution in which there is an exchange of fellowship, an ex- pression of talent, and, above all, an enrichment of education. 41 the AsheBoro Nich School Marching Band Colorguards: Kneeling: Ellen Bunch; Standing: Deb Jones, Dianne Har- dee, Susan Edwards, Ginger Rush, Pam Jones. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Tate Blake, the 104-member Asheboro High School Chorus has been a welcomed source of entertainment. Pre- senting musical programs at both school and civic functions, the chorus has won city-wide acclaim for its performances. Two chorus classes were conducted this year for the first time. While Cho- rus II provided the less-experienced vocalists with beneficial training, Chorus I helped perfect the voices of advanced students. Whichever the sport might have been, the student learned a sense of team cooperation and individual responsibility through intramurals. ORGANIZATIONS Betas Nosted Olstrict Rally “How is a newspaper printed?” “What is the correct parliamentary procedure for this situation?” This year’s Beta Club tackled these questions and many others by planning programs that were interesting and informative. They displayed their willingness to share their club’s ideas by sending delegates to the state convention and by host- ing a district meeting at our school. In chatting with Gilles Besserro, an exchange student, they gained a special closeness to the country they study. An- other of their numerous projects was the collec- tion of gifts for soldiers in Vietnam, although the members’ main goal was to expand the world for about sixty students. Their activities affected not only the local chapter, tone, but reached across the world in providing gifts for our servicemen in Vietnam. On a state- wide level, Karen. It is a big world and the Future Homemakers of America en- joyed discovering it. As Vice-President of the State F.H.A., Karen Allen symbolized many future home- makers. Thanks to a man with a smile and much patience, we have managed to capture school life in photographs. He has been available to us from 6:00 in the morning until 11:00 at night, subject to all the oddities of the staff and their picture ideas. Had it not been for his continued coopera- tion, we would not have had such a fine yearbook for the last eleven years. We, the annual staff of 1967-1968, commend Mr. Marston Wright for a job well done. As the year progressed, we discovered that one ad- visor cannot do the impos- sible. Into our ranks came an understanding English teach- er to help with our gramma- tical errors and composition problems. For his patience and assistance, we thank Mr. David Gallemore. To Mrs. Dorothy Snyder, Mr. Richard Meissner, Dr. Keith Hudson, and all mem- bers of the administration and faculty for their patience and cooperation during the course of publishing our book, we thank you. bs Mr. Marston Wright, our man with the flash on the spot. 253 To Live this pledGe I Give myself From day to day, always.
