Q M- ERNESTINE BROWN Secretary TUDE T CO NCIL A desire for self-government has been a characteristic of the American people from the very beginning. It is not surprising nor irregular that in the schools of America young people want to experiment with this same democratic philosophy. The Student Council is the core of this experimen- tation. Each student has the privilege of expressing his opinions and his ideas through representatives who are elected by each homeroom. These spokesmen bring out a multitude of ideas and suggestions at Council meet- ings which they attend once a week. They give weekly reports to their homeroom groups as to the business that is brought up in the Council meet- ings and the decisions that are made during the sessions. Election of the Student Council officers is the culminating event of the spring semesterls happenings. Following a spirited campaign, the convention is held. Students once again exercise their rights by voting. For the past two years we have been fortunate to use the voting machines which are used in our city elections. This privilege has been made possible for us by the Randolph County Board of Elections. During the year, our association functions through various committees. These committees are responsible for planning and guiding the activities of the Council. Service to the students and to the faculty is one of the main objectives of the group. Outstanding activities are Orientation Day for freshmen the week before school begins, the student handbook filled with helpful infor- mation pertaining to school life and school regulations. and a scholarship which is awarded to some worthy graduating senior. Other special activities include morning devotions. all schoolwide elections. Social Standards Day. and operating the school store. YVe commend our council and its adviser. The team did not shine as u unit. but u few individuals stood out. The Blue Comet matmen ure at the present experiencing their best season. Thus far, they have suffered their only setback to Thomasville. while winning over Xlooresville twice and Kan- napolis once. All except two regulars from last year's team returned, and these boys give the team the vital experience which they need. Coach lim Hurst has done an outstanding iob through the years developing our team. and his hard work is paying off. A wrestling clinic wus held in the Asheboro High School gymnasium in December. VVrestlers from different parts of the state gathered to learn new skills and improve the old ones, It was very successful and plans for another such clinic are being discussed.
