We remember those days held no high significance . . . but now they have become to us the most treasured ones in our lHCIUOI'V. Now today as we look back, we see what A. H. S. really meant to us .... glorious friendships, the day of the Blue and White when cheers rose above all, and defeat was far away, books and learning - - all were important. What if we are sentimental. These years will always reign supreme in our memories. 2 THE scHooL BOARD Q 45 qw. OF If -'wi ' 01? ASHEBORO CITY SCHOOL bxlg 7!1x NIR. GUY B. Almond DEDICATION ...,.. i To the two who have gone far beyond their call of duty to serve their students and fellowmen - VVe the Annual Stall of 1951 dedicate our Yearbook. VVe remember when we were freshmen how they helped to keep us from feeling so green and the way they guided us as Sophomores and juniors. Now that we are leaving, we wish to make this dedication as a small token of our appreciation for unselfish service. To one, Miss XVood, for her ability to instill in us her love for great litera- ture, and to the other, Miss l,assister, for her patience and thoroughness not only in teaching but her help in nmking' this publication possible. SICNIORS NOT PICTURICID llcnry Allred Duris Clark -lunniru l-'raiik Lloyd lfurr Billy Henson 36 1 Class History Our last year as students of dear 'ol Ashcboro High is too quickly drawing to an end. Never again will we dream about the school dances, football games, class plays, and all the wonderful times we have spent with our friends. lt seems only yesterday that we entered A.H.S. as a regular bunch of green freshmen. At first' the going seemed tough, but soon we fell into the high school routine. How big we felt w hen we became Sophomoresl XVe were always reminding the new freshmen of their upperclassmen . Our next vear was filled with excitement, trills, and work. ln that year of I9-W we formed the Student Council, an organization each of us was proud of. That same year Klr. George XV. Hohnes, lll, our principal, accepted a position as assistant professor at L'.N.C. To fill his place came Xlr. Hatcher P. Story. After weeks of hard work and practice we presented that marvelous junior play entitled, Spring Fever. David jarrell, Harry Anderson, XYalter Yount, Charles Burkhead, Paul Davis, Doyle Craven, joan Carlton, Becky Kearns, lris Chriscoe, Nancy Stradlev, Sara Trollinger, Audrey NVest, Betty NVrape, Bonnie Burge, XYavne Cibson, jimmy Scott, Paddi Koorice, Sara Alatthews, Xlarv Sue Haskins, Betty l.ane Humblei David Sumner, Charles Holmberg, Bobby Davis, and jimmy lflynt made up the double cast, XVe will never forget the prom we so excitedly and proudly gave the deserving Seniors. Although the evening in its beautiful setting of 'fBlue Hoon soon passed away, it will long be remembered by everyone. Beginning our last vear as dignified seniors, we were fortunate indeed to come into the modern, new school building so long anticipated. lt was like coming into high school again-we didn't know our way around. Time came for selecting the Senior superlatives, mascots, colors, and Hower. XVe chose as our inascots-twins Alike and Steve Lovell, and Linda Gray Cox. Our colors became blue and silver, our flower, an American beauty tredb rose. Each year we have had excellent leaders. Officers our Sophomore year were Harry Anderson, president, james York, vice-presidentg Bonnie Burge, secretary, and Earl Dennis, treasurer. ln our junior vear Harry Anderson was again elected president. Lynn Priest was chosen vice-pesident, with Elizabeth XVatson as secre- tary and Stella Kemp as treasurer. Our last year David jarrell was elected president. G race XValker vice-president, joan Powers, secretary, and Richard Kemp treasurer. Twelve years we have worked, laughed, and shared our troubles. The time is drawing nigh when we IULISK separate. Each one must choose his path to tread hoping in the end to reach his goal. XVe had a past, present, and future at A.H.S. now, we only have a past, but we will reminisce in that past - we will remember. BONNIE BURGE. historian 37 Memoriessof Asheboro High l. 'm 1 .lv 4. 5. Txyelye long years have gently slipped by, And lo! Vile are SENIORS at Asheboro High. lt doesn't seem possible for us to be, Ending all our school activities. All through these happy, peaceful years, XVe've shared our heartaches, joys, and fears. These precious memories have entwined, Around our hearts like clinging vines. XVe'll ever cherish Asheboro High, O'er all things which in memories lie, Because that's where we've spent our schooldays, ln a thousand different ways! Some of us may err and falter, Some may rise to heights unknown, But regardless where we wander, Asheboro High School shall be home! Oh, God, we pray that thou wilt help us, XVorthy citizens to be. The comets are all out this season, from the beginning, to seize the championship. They were runners-up in the tourna- ment at Statesville last season but are out to win the South Piedmont Conference this year. Lettermen back with the Comets this year are: james York, Harry Anderson, Max Connell, and Bobby Morgan. New grounders are: Don Funderburk, David U' Elliot, Gilbert Cagle, Marvin York, Charles Loggins, and jr. Morgan. Don Bulla was also with the team last COACH WARREN HAWKINS year. Center, james York, and forward, Harry An- derson, are co-captains this year. The Comets started the season by contesting Robbins. We won this game. Siler City was next on the list, however, they were not too much trouble. Reynolds our next opponents, whom we had feared, defeated us by 20 points. We traveled to High Point the following week where we were defeated by 12 points. XVe were I1Ot discouraged by this defeat and the following week won over Monroe by a margin of 30 points. 'fliannapolis means trouble, stated coach Warren Hawkins at our last practice before the game. VVith this challenge from our coach we went into the game with a determination to win - when the final whistle blew, the score was 42-28 in favor of Asheboro. Coach Hawkins and his cagers are a group that Asheboro High School can be proud of. Team - Bulla, Connell, M. York, Elliott, Funderburke, Cagle, Loggins, Anderson, J. York, jr. Morgan, B. Morgan, Coach Hawkins. GIRL'S BASKETBALL TEAM Basketball season for 1951 began with a bang. Around seventy girls arrived the first day to try their luck at this great sport. ln order that a greater number of girls might participate this year, Miss Glisson made plans for a junior Varsity team as well as for a Varsity team. Back on the Varsity for their last year are Lois Pugh. joan Powers, Grace VValker, and Elizabeth :ff Xyatson, as forwardsg as guards, Golda Garner, Paddi 5' 9 lxoonce, Becky Kearns, Becky Presnell and Donna Ruth Brown. Girls on the Varsity who will still be Coach here as members of the 1951-52 team are Dolores Hen- .xNGlfl.YN GLISSOX son, Squat Cockerham. and Clara Mae Needham as guards. H The team chose as their co-captains. joan Powers and Becky liearnsg and as their managers, Peggy Barnard and Frances Albright. The girls started their season by winning the first five games. These games with .Xlouroe and Concord were Conference games. lt is hoped that through co-operation and team work this team of 1951 will live up to all that is expected of it. lieam: .Xliss Cilisson - Coach, Needham, Brown, XYatson, XValker, Saunders, Presncll.
