CALLS S IAS TQ Four years ago a heavy cloud descended on “‘ole”’ Asheboro Hi; namely, a new class of ‘green’ freshmen. We were scared, yet thrilled to be high students at last. Now that we are ready to graduate, we are going to miss the school, the teachers, and our fellow-classmates. Lcoking back over the years, we remember many delightful things—the thrill of entering high school; our first annual (We nearly read all the words off the pages); our class rings (we went around waving our hands at every one for months), the excitement of planning and attending the Junior-Senior prom (We danced on clouds amid the beautiful decorations which carried out the theme of Stardust, completely forgetting the work and headaches of giving the dance) ; that wonder- ful Junior play, in which June Cheek, Eleanor Sue Allen, Jean Stafford, Joan Cross, Jo Anne Craven, Ermel Lee McPherson, Imogene Cox, Ronald Morgan, Ned Beeker, Gilbert Lane, and Marvin Galloway made up the cast. Perhaps we are more partial to this year because it is Our last; yet it has really been wonderful. At the first assembly we were given the privilege of sitting at the front of the auditorium, and march- ing out while all the other students stood. Cer- tainly this was a great thrill, which we had long looked forward to. Throughout the entire four years we have had excellent leadership. In our Sophomore year we 30 elected Howard Seawell, President; Bobby Bur- rows, Vice-President; Betty Lou Kearns, Secretary; and Frank Cole, Treasurer. Our Junior year Howard Seawell was again elected President, with Ned Beeker as Vice-President, Jo Anne Craven as Secretary, and Marcia Drake as Treasurer. For the final year, when we knew we must have good and dependable leadership, we chose for our President, Bobby Burrows; for our Vice-President, Ned Beeker; for our Treasurer, Betty Lou Kearns; and for our Secretary, Sue Dorsett. In 1946, our first year in high school, Mr. Guy B. Teachey was our principal. When he became superintendent of the city school system the next year, Mr. George W. Holmes, III became princi- pal. He remained with us two years. Last year he resigned in order to accept a position as assistant professor at U. N. C. Mr. Hatcher P. Story then became principal. About the middle of the school year we selected senior superlatives, colors, mascots, motto, and flower. Colors: Red and White. Mascots: Carol McCrary, Sam Rich. Motto: “Upon The Sea of Life, We Venture Unafraid.” Flower: Carnation. These years have been fun. Perhaps in later years, we shall look upon them as the best years of our lives. They will always hold a very promi- GIRLS Tale TOU nent place in our memories. There wasn’t just work those years; Every backward look brings a melancholy sigh. There were games, dances, and fun. We've nearly reached the parting point And we'll keep those in our memories, That separates friends, you and I. Where we'll cherish every one. All through those years, happy years, Some will falter and fall on the way; That were spent at Asheboro High, Others will rise to heights unknown; There prevailed that air of striving, But no matter how far our paths may lead, That air of “do or die.” Asheboro High School will always be “home.” Oh, God, we pray that you will guide And strengthen us for perils drawing nigh. Lead our footsteps towards the right As now we leave Asheboro High. June Cheek 31 LiAlS IP WH TL IL I, Doris Hoover, will all my troubles to Becky Kearns, as I'm getting tired of carrying them. Wonderful game Duke played today, don’t you think?” ‘Why yes, Ned, that was a good game. Where are you going?” “I’m getting off in Asheboro to see some old friends, and you?” “I’m going to Asheboro; I live there, you know. I left my family at home today.” “My, Marcia, we all had fun in Asheboro High School. At the time, we thought it very boring, but we really enjoyed it.” “Well, well, city limits of Asheboro! There’s the highway to ‘Possum’ College — 902. I hear they have made it a state-wide race track. Leon Brown, always finding a racket, had in- stalled parking meters down at the college and has made a fortune.” “You know, Ned, our class of ’50 hasn’t done half bad in this old world. Most of us are content with life. For instance, I’ve never seen anyone that looks so happy and content as did Bill and Joan. Oh, little Billy Lilly, Junior! He is really cute. I saw them in their new Hudson just the other day.” “Have you heard about Jo Anne and Alton’s engagement? They're going to be married as soon as Alton finishes college. He’s been there nine years—! 38 “Look, Marcia, there’s the Hoover building towering over all the rest. You know, it’s a pity she never married. She always said she wanted to be rich. She is just a typical career girl.” “That sign says, Vote for mayor and vote for Seawell. Well, old Junior turned out just as I ex- pected, once a leader always a leader.” “Look, there’s Robert Cox’s new Drive-In theatre, and the movie there now is ‘Night Train to Chattanooga’ starring Eleanor Sue Allen!” “You know, Ned, if it wasn’t for Margie Hud- speth Hines, and Imojean Cox (they're both de- partment heads) Belks couldn’t open their doors every day.” “Speaking of Belks, I saw June Cheek up there the other day choosing for herself a stylish hat. She has really made a fine English teacher. for Asheboro High School. She and the former Pat Hughes (she’s now Mrs. Skeen) are still best friends.” “T understand that Asheboro High’s football team has chalked up another victory under the able direction of Joe Trogdon with Sammie Clodfelter as his fine assistant. S.” “T had a delicious steak at Frank Cole and Chuck Zimmerman’s new cafeteria recently. They are doing a thriving business, and you can always see some of our old classmates dining there.” “Oh, by the way, Ned, on my recent vacation to New York I ran into Harris Johnson, who 1s co-starring with Ermel Lee McPherson in the new hit “North Atlantic.” He gave me a ticket to a pro football game, and you could have knocked me over with a feather when Bobby Burrows trot- ted out on the field with the Chicago Bears. We can be quite proud of Sarah Almond and Harlan Creech. Sarah is a famous author now and Harlan has gained tremendous prestige with all of his compositions. Robert Cronk has made a fine Army Captain; Charles Way is known all over the world as the second Walt Disney and has certainly prov- ed successful. I understand that Walt Krewson and his orchestra are to be here this week-end for a big dance.”’ “Yes b) Marcia, but what about all those who have stayed in Asheboro and are doing well with their varied businesses? For instance, Gilbert Lane ah has his own service station; Betty Simmons is di- recting a church choir; Bobby Connell has opened his own dry cleaning plant; Jimmy Moody is the mayor of Balfour; Donald Moore has recently been appointed manager of the local Rose’s Dime Store; Van Rich has his own print shop; Jean Stafford is a most efficient court stenographer; Bill Perdue has made an excellent Police Chief; and Bobby Dantzler is manager of the Colonial Food Store.” “It certainly seems as if many of the graduates of 1950 have gone to the top of the ladder, Ned, but we will not forget those who have settled down in or near Asheboro and have contributed maybe more than anyone to this old world by being useful citizens, model housewives, and fine businessmen. Stone as head football coach. Mr. Stone, a native of Trenton, New Jersey, has distinguished himself at Raleigh and Asheville as a football coach. His cutstanding Icadership and his ability to inspire the best from those under his guidance have brought forward such steliar performers as Charlie Justice and Jim Cain. Asheboro High School 1s indeed fortunate to have Mr. Stone here to develop our physical education program. The Asheboro High School Blue Comets came forth with the new look in 1949. They appeared in new uniforms, and under the leadership of their new coach, set up a new offense. The games won and lost cannot tell the story of the Blue Comets. Although they won only two games, tied two, and lost five, the Comets played aggressive and threatening games throughout the season. We are proud to have a fine team, as we have in the Blue Comets, to represent our school. Team: Burkhead, Dantzler, Funderburke, Trogdon,.Prtest, Renigar, Patterson, Allred, Baker, Holmburg, York, Jarrell, Kivett, Seawell, Bulla, Morgan, Hurley, Broadway, Connell, Coach Stone, B. Poole, Gallo- way, McCombs, Burrows, Wentz, Johnson, Smith, R. Priest, Hix, Evans, Hartman. 66 (A) eChucks (7) opp (13) “Don” (19) “Bob”’ (25) “Rocket”’ (4) “Chicken”’ (10) “Charlie” (16) “Marv” (22) Benny BOYS BAS itera First Row: Beeker, Clodfelter, Dantzler, Patterson, Ccnnell, Bulla e Second Row: Morgan, Seawell, Anderson, York, Burrows, Elliott, Coach Hawkins. Mr. Warren G. Hawkins, popular athlete and assistant football coach, is the Blue Comets’ basketball coach again this year. He has had remarkable success with his Asheboro Cagers producing in 1948 a team which captured second place in the South Piedmont conference. Mr. Hawkins, called “Buddy” by admiring students, was particularly outstanding in basket- ball at Appalachian, where he graduated in 1947. 70 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Uttar Ns Cockerham, Koonce, Powers, Henson, Pugh, Kearns, Brown, Presnell, Walker, Needham, Saunders, Baker, Trollinger, Wrape, Garner, Humble, Maness, McPherson, Marion. Managers: Peggy Barnard, Elizabeth Watson. With the return of nine lettermen, the outlook for girls’ basketball is indeed bright. The team elected as their Co-Captains Grace Walker and Paddi Koonce who will be their leaders throughout the year. For the first time the entire first string is made up of Junior girls, and although the official season has not begun, the girls hold the title of ‘“undefeated’”’ during the practice games they have played. The probable starting line-up reads as follows: Pugh, Powers, and Walker on the forward end and Garner, Presnell, and Koonce as the guards. Others seeing a lot of action during the game will be Trollinger, who has a nice set shot, and Kearns, a short guard but quick on the break. But after all, ours is a team and there is no individual starring. Let us remember that it takes all eighteen to put us where we are! liss Glisson We have been very fortunate in having with us for the past four years Miss Angelyn Glisson, who is an excellent Girls’ Athletic Director. Miss Glisson hails from Hawkinsville, Georgia. She attended Georgia State College for Women, and came to Asheboro High School highly recommended. Miss Glisson introduced intramural sports in our high school and during the four years they have become one of the outstanding highlights of the year. In the past, she has produced many winning teams in girls’ basketball, and we feel sure she will continue to do so in the future. 72 ( THE BASEBALL TEAM OF 49 First Row: M. Connell, Saunders, B. Connell, Miller, D. Jarrell, Broadway e@ Second Row. Poole, Hudson, J. Jarrell, Shelton, Renigar, Burrows @ Third Row: York, Seawell, Redding, Lewis, Cagle, Moody e@ Fourth Row: Coach Burroughs, Carper, Clodfelter, Hartman. Managers: Charles Holmburg, Lynn Priest. A number of our best lettermen have returned to the diamond of old A. H. S. From the Junior class, we have Sammie Clodfelter, who shows much promise of being a good man behind the plate; and Tiffany Hutson, who has pulled us through many a rugged contest, is on the mound again. Junior Seawell, a first baseman with an enviable record, comes in again to take honors for the “Comets.” To add more punch at the plate, ‘Jake’ Jarrell, a fast man in the field and a hard hitting outfielder, is here again with the same zest he exhibited in the 48 squad. Bill Miller, another good outfielder, is right along with Jake and is expected to make a record worthy of approval. Bobby Burrows, another number one ball player, who helped the “Comets” out of many rough spots in his junior year, is right here again with all his speed and accuracy. The Sophomore class has its share of good men coming in again. Max Connell, who held shortstop through the former season and showed much promise for the oncoming seasons, and David Jarrell, the boy that held the hot corner down, are ready to go all out again for the team. Harvey Broadway did a splendid job at the second sack and showed evidence of quite a hitter, too. His premises are good. James York proved his worth as an outfielder and came in again with the same gcod spirit and ability. 74 76 Comp oropid of HSHEBORO MOM SIER Y MILLS Z Comp [; men ls O McCRARY INDUSTRIES McCRARY HOSIERY MILLS.
