After undergoing the regular freshman routine of getting in the wrong rooms, talking and chewing gum in class, and causing a general disturbance, we soon fell into the pattern of high school life. Returning the next year as sophomores, we felt like experienced high school stu- dents and began making life miserable for the new freshmen, thus enabling the seniors to tag us as silly sophomores . With various members of the class par- ticipating in different sports, we turned out more readily to the games and did our part in the cheering. Of course, we had the usual trouble with Bugology, Julius Caesar, and the Gallic Warsg but by doing a little studying and trying to pass a few of the tests, we were able to claim the title of juniors the following year. Entering our Junior year and feeling like regular upperclassmen, we immedi- ately elected our class officers. Those chosen to lead us through this momen- tous year were: Max Redding, presidentg Howard Cox, vice-president, Joyce Lucas. secretaryg and Barbara Allred, treasurer, Sad, upon losing Mr. F. D. McLeod, who had been our superintendent for two years, we were fortunate in having Mr. Guy B. Teachey, formerly our prin- cipal, to fill his position. Mr. George W. Holmes, III, came to take over the duties of principal in the fall of l9-17. After weeks of hard work and several misfortunes, we presented our junior play entitled, Aunt Tillie Goes to Town. Those making up the cast were: Barbara Cox, Patsy McCain, Bernadine Powers, Barbara Maness, Clara Lee Hare, Earlene .Ju-a ,Q ,166 Vestal, Sally Anne Kivett, Howard Cox, Bill Underwood, jerry Wagger, and Tommy Poindexter. The same year we discovered that grades counted, for only twenty-two of us were received into the Beta Club. Those chosen because of their high scholastic standings as junior Marshals were: Howard Cox, chiefg jerry Ward, Barbara Allred, Dixie Cannon, Emily Stone, janet Story, and Betty McCrary. Spring came, bringing the time for the annual Prom. The Junior Class spent weeks making plans and preparing dec- orations to carry out the chosen theme of Moonlight and Roses . The evening in this setting soon passed away, but was long remembered by everyone. The Seniors expressed their deepest appre- ciation. Beginning our last year with pomp and circumstance, we attained the desired height of dignified seniors . Keeping in mind that we needed wise leadership this last year, we elected as our class officers the following: Howard Cox, president, Alton Cummings, vice- presidentg Betty Holt, secretaryg and planet Story, treasurer. Chosen to serve us as class mascots are Ann Arthur and Jimmy Trollinger. Green and white are our colors and the gardenia, our flower. To make our class original, we chose a seal picturing a gold miner and a '49 Follies girl. Across the top of the seal are the words The Gay Forty-miners, and on the bottom is found our class motto. Onward ever, backward never . We find that after four years on one main highway, it has branched into SS ways. Some will find detours, bridges, and other obstaclesg some might even take a wrong turn, but many will travel the straight unhindered path. Even though hardships and difficulties may be en- countered, each senior hopes to find his goal through steadfast plodding. BARBARA Cox ,W SALLY ANNE lilVliT'l' Class Historians . Hanes won this heartbreaker 6-0 on an intercepted flat pass in the second quarter. The Comets played hard, aggressive football all the way, keeping All-State tailback jackie Cooke completely bottled up. Asheboro came back strong in the second game, running rough- shod over Mebane to the tune of 32-O. Redding, Bowen, Voncannon, and McCombs all ran well behind the beautiful blocking of the Ashe- boro line. The Comets made the long trip to North Wilkesboro for their first conference game and also their first conference win. Asheborols passing attack proved the difference in this close tilt. A toss from Redding to Bowen produced the touchdown that gave us the game 6-O. The boys in blue made it three in a row with a 19-O victory over an impotent Hillsboro eleven. The next week Asheboro played Thomasville in their only after- noon game of the season. The game was played on fairly even terms all the way, except for two long runs that spelled a 12-0 defeat for the Comets. james York Paul Trullinger Glen Hurley Gene Bowen Buddy Vuncannon Bobby Patterson Howard Cox Max Redding Wilscin Kidd Curtis McCombs fNot Pictured! is... 1 f-Q sl! 'Q CDF SEASGN Asheboro lost to a powerful Statesville team the following week 33-O in a hard fought battle. In their seventh tilt the Comets dropped a 24-6 encounter with Graham. Redding hit the line and went over standing up for Asheboro's lone marker. Asheboro resumed conference action the next week against Kan- napolis, losing 19-6. Red Hurley's running was the brightest spot in the Comets' offense. Albemarle downed the big blues 20-6 in their last home game of the season. The Comets traveled to Monroe for their last game of the season. Although Asheboro had been blessed with fair weather in every previous game, they were forced to play on a field covered with water. The Comets battled Monroe to a standstill the second half, but could not overcome the 19-U lead that was piled up against them in the first half. This game was marked by the Comets' usual scrappy and spirited game. be Iuninr Seawell Odell liuett l-iobby l5L1l'I'im's Ioe ldrogtlon ., .J-list? Coach Wfarren Hawkins' team has height, speed, and ability to hit the basket, plus scrap, spirit, and teamwork. Of the four pivot men, Hal and James York and Tommy Poindexter are all well over six feet, with Seawell just under the six foot mark. Red Voncannon, Jerry Wiirtl, and Sammy Clodfelter are the three men from last years squad, with Bobby Patterson, Max Red- ding, Bobby Burrows, and Raymond Bingham capably filling out the eleven-inan roster. ln their two warm-up games before Christmas the Comets downed the Asheboro Panthers 415-Sl and Robbins 36-28, The Comets showed they could hit the basket consistently in both of these games. Asheboios pivot men completely dominated the backboard at all times, while the outmen worked smoothly on offense and displayed a close knit defense. ,x This seasons edition of the Blue Comets' basketball team is one of the most promising in years, and it is expected to rank high in the South Piedmont Conterenee, 59 17111111 mz1'.'
