CALM Moya ecy Strangs things happen to us sometimes and mysterious gifts sometimes fall out of the blue into our hands just when we least expect them. We had said we would never again be surprised at anything that happened in Asheboro, but when a news- sss , . . . paper dropped from the very air above us, we were willing to take back, the rash words we had spoken, for it was certainly a startling occurrence, to say the least, when we read the name and date, The Ash Can, june 5, 1958. Vffhere did it come from and what could it all signify? We were never ones to remain long in suspense when the means of gratifying our curiosity were at hand, so we opened the paper hastily and from the records of ten years yet unborn the future of our classmates loomed up at us. Let's read the Personals first, byline john Snooper Hilkerf' we exclaimed. It says here: Miss Doris Kearns left yesterday for Occoneechee on a buying trip for Baker's Shoe Store. She was accompanied by Misses Peggy Hayes, Hazel Hinshaw, Al- lene Brown, and Betty jean Ledwell, who are associated with a fashion designing company in Asheboro. Wii1frecl Hicks, star infielder of Bal- four Braves, has just signed a contract with the Boston Beans. Misses Peggy Lane and Clara 'jean Xlifay, in charge of the Music Department at Duke University, visited relatives in Asheboro recently. MissKMartha AnlLHausfer left Thurs- day afternoon for where she will be a member of the faculty at Newton- Conover High. Miss Bonnie Pearce and Miss ylfggioq teachers at Asheboro High School, left recently for Wiike Forest College where they will take a course in The Psychology of High School Students. Mr, Charles McPherson has recently opened a night club in New York City, The Ostrich Club . He seems to be creat- ing quite a sensation with his wonderful voice. Playing in his orchestra is Bugs Settlemyre. Mr. Max Vestal, Superintendent of Asheboro High School, is working on his PhD. at U. N. C., during the summer. A. C. Dunn and Max Lowdermilk, athletic coaches at Guilford College, were among the spectators who turned out to see the Blue Comets on their first day of practice. Coach Updyke, from Penn. State, was with them.' Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Lewallen of Gray's Chapel visited relatives in Ashe- boro recently. Mr. Lewallen, local Scout Executive, has recently started Scouting Campaigns in Randleman, Franklinville, Wortlixiille, and Pleasant Garden. Bob Poole brought his championship baseball team to Asheboro for exhibitions and tryouts the first of this week. Miss Doris Hoffman, Mrs. Bootie Scruggs fthe former Thelma Presnellj and Miss Mary Florence Smith, teachers in Randleman, recently attended a teach- ers' meeting in Asheboro. Miss Evelyn Ledford, famous woman lawyer, made the speech at this meeting.
