During the first year we had a multi- tude of troubles. Getting to class on time seemed impossible when there were only three minutes to gab and reach the next class. Our text books were never in the right place at the right time. Our home work seemed to be a flood accompanied with wind and thunder. In spite of all this the seniors inspired us with awe. We studied very hard, hoping to be in their place in three more years. Wfhen our Sophomore year began, we felt qualified to be called silly sopho- mores. We giggled at everything that was said. At the beginning of the year Mr. Car- penter, our principal, went to Elkin. We hated to see him go, but were very for- tunate in having Mr. Teachy come here as our principal. At the beginning of our junior year everyone began to feel rather important. All became more interested in football games and the basketball games. Some of us were hoping to be lucky enough to be tapped for the Beta Club. Late in the year fourteen of us were tapped and ini- tiated into the Beta Club. The class chose as its ofhcers Winfred Webb, presidentg Max Lowdermilk, vice- presidentg Margaret Price, secretaryg jo- anne Grimes, treasurer. In the early spring of 1947 our class rings arrived. All juniors made it con- venient to wave their hands about a great deal in order to show off their rings. That spring the class gave a play to raise funds to entertrin the Senior Class. The play was entitled Here Comes Char- lie. Bobby Strickland, Mary Moore Lov- ett, C. A. Holt, lane Cox, Marilyn Walk- er, Keith Shealy, Gerlene Cox, V. U. Pul- liam, 'loanne Grimes. and -lodie Pugh made up the cast. Our junior-Senior Prom came in late April. That was a great event for all who attended. We tried to give .1 very attrac- tive dance, as the Senior Class had given two dances. Moonlight Serenade was our theme. The last of May we were all rushing around studying very hard and eramrning, for final exams were coming up and we surely did need to make good on them. On September 4, 1947, we entered the doors of Asheboro High School as digni- hed seniors. Our class is a rather small one, with only 79 members. We shall all be glad to graduate. but shall miss our Alma Mater. This fall we lost our principal, Mr. Guy B. Teachy, who was promoted to the position of Superintendent of City Schools. In his place came Mr. George W. Holmes, who is filling the position admirably. After thinking about it for a few weeks, we elected our class othcers. They are Keith Shealy, presidentg Raymond Up- dyke, vice-president: Faedene Ragsdale, secretaryg C. A. Holt, treasurer. We chose as our mascots Billy joyner and Sally Stedman. Our class colors are red and white, and our flower is a red rose. Our motto is Not Finished, just Begun. The history of the Class of '48 will not end the night we receive our diplomas, but it will continue as each member goes his or her separate way. May each of us realize his greatest ambition. c. jane Cox, Cfr1.l',f H ir! c11'j.111. - -v eliowf unc! We had said we would never again be surprised at anything that happened in Asheboro, but when a news- sss , . . . paper dropped from the very air above us, we were willing to take back, the rash words we had spoken, for it was certainly a startling occurrence, to say the least, when we read the name and date, The Ash Can, june 5, 1958. Vffhere did it come from and what could it all signify? We were never ones to remain long in suspense when the means of gratifying our curiosity were at hand, so we opened the paper hastily and from the records of ten years yet unborn the future of our classmates loomed up at us. Let's read the Personals first, byline john Snooper Hilkerf' we exclaimed. It says here: Miss Doris Kearns left yesterday for Occoneechee on a buying trip for Baker's Shoe Store. Playing in his orchestra is Bugs Settlemyre. Mr. Max Vestal, Superintendent of Asheboro High School, is working on his PhD. at U. N. C., during the summer. A. C. Dunn and Max Lowdermilk, athletic coaches at Guilford College, were among the spectators who turned out to see the Blue Comets on their first day of practice. Coach Updyke, from Penn. State, was with them.' Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Lewallen of Gray's Chapel visited relatives in Ashe- boro recently. Mr. Lewallen, local Scout Executive, has recently started Scouting Campaigns in Randleman, Franklinville, Wortlixiille, and Pleasant Garden. Bob Poole brought his championship baseball team to Asheboro for exhibitions and tryouts the first of this week. Miss Evelyn Ledford, famous woman lawyer, made the speech at this meeting. XWhew! lt seems we've reached the end of the Personal Column, we said with a long sigh, Is that Mr. Still's picture on the front page? No!it's Vance Frye and his Slippery Seven Orchestra. Because of the lack of experience and weight the Comets lost to a much heavier and better experienced ball team. The next game the Comets came home to win over a highly favored Mineral Springs eleven by a close margin of 2 to tl. The Comets had learned much from the week before and could not be stopped. Muss McPherson was a stand-out in the line, while Redding ran well in the backheld. The score came in the fourth and linal quarter. when the visiting team was backed against its own goal post and was trying to kick out, but a bad pass from center and a hard charging Comet line, which smeared the kicker before he could get the ball off. decided the game. A The next week the Comets played Lexington. one of the strongest teams in the state, and lost by a score of 61 to tl. The following week the Comets met a strong gridiron machine from Thomasville, The team looked good at times, but couldn't hold the Tommies down, who ended up on the big end of a score 27-0. The next week the Comets took to the road again only to be de- feated by a powerful gridiron eleven from Statesville. Playing the hrst half almost on even terms, the opponents came roaring back in the last half to win by a score of 5-4-6. Redding was the boy who scored for the Comets. The next game was played on the home held. The Comets who looked better in this game. held the visitors down to a score of 25-6. f K Y. i ii' , ' ' .gates at .r . 1 . - . k K sys- t X, it A X X as - VN 3 x Q I ' i 5 0 T SUMMARY Concord, which was one of the strongest teams in the conference, thought they would run away with the Comets, but the outstanding running of little Atlas Dunn held them backs. Asheboro's only score came from a pass from Dunn to end, 'LUpdyke . In a non-conference game the Comets played Hillsboro there and lost by a score of 33-14. The Comets weren't out of the running until that third quarter in which the opponents scored twice to go out in front for keeps. 'Updyke and Dunn scored for the Blue Comets in this game. After the trip to Hillsboro the Comets went to Albemarle to lose by a score of 26-13. The game was closer than the score indicated. It was in this game that Little Atlas Dunn , Asheboros speed mer- chant, made one of the most spectacular runs of the year, going 70 yards for a score. Frye, end for Asheboro, also looked good, intercepting an opponents lateral and going about 60 yards before he was dragged down from behind on the 5-yard line. Kidd hit center for the touchdown and Asheboro's last score. STM ' The last game was played at home on Lindly held against one ol' the strongest teams in the northern part of the state, Asheboro ended up on the short end of a score of 46-6. All the boys fought hard in the last game of the season but couldn't stop the powerful North Wilkes- boro eleven. The Blue Comets this year with a great guy for a eoath and a lot of good material hope to do wonders on the Lourt. Coath Hawkins brought to Asheboro a new system ol' basketball, the double-pivot which the boys arent used to yet. but by time the regular season starts they hope to be working like a machine. The big boys in the pivot slot are the following: Redding. York, I-lilker. Poindexter. Redding, .1 big boy, 6 ft. 4 in., who came up from the junior Varsity has the looks of being a real man under the basket, York. .mother tall man, rw ft. 3 in.. who saw attion last year is also shaping into a good pivot man. Hilker and Poindexter. two more rw tooters. also came up from the -lunior Varsity. Out front we hnd the fol- lowing boysi Holt, Lowdermilk, Wfard, Dunn, Mc- Pherson, Voncannon, Clodfelter, Caviness. From this group Lowdermilk, Dunn, McPherson, and Voncannon are lettermen. Vlfard, Clodfelter, and Caviness came up from the junior Varsity and are showing up well. All of these boys are looking good in the warm up games and are pushing each other for a starting berth. In the three warm up games the Comets have won two. lost one. In the first game the Comets beat Denton but in the next game they lost by two points to Robbins. The next week the Comets traveled to Denton to trounce them by a score of 52 to 15. Wlith these warm up games behind us and several more before us, we shall open our season in the South Piedmont Conference with high hopes for the season.
