Thirty and M019 ec? But, professor, do you think it will work? Of course it will work, Mary. I've perfected it. I'm sure now that it won't fail and I want you to be the first to try it. I'm not sure yet whether I want to. Ex- perimenting with a time machine that will put you ten years in the future is a pretty risky business but I'll try anything once. All right, fasten your safety belt-and you're off! Doesn't Asheboro look funny now? I guess it is because it's so much bigger, and look how tall the buildings are! What in the world is wrong with the school? It looks deserted. I wonder why, Oh, I remember now! I guess they have built the new building. Why, if it isn't Anne Hooper! How are you? Do you mean to tell me that you're actually teaching math in Asheboro High School? How wonderful! Who else is teaching there? I always did think Elizabeth Strider would make a good librarian. So Nina Walton is teaching commercial subjects. Who would have thought of it, and Margaret Kelley, too! Oh, is she just teaching shorthand? I guess it seems funny to some of the girls to have Carolyn Stewart and Maxine Davidson teach- ing their children in Park Street School. It must be some fun teaching both Maxine Brown's sons together. It's a good thing they both have dif- ferent last names-when I think of the trouble we had way back then. It seems right too for Harris to be coaching the boys' sports and Ruth Brower, the girls'. It seems the kids will not only have good teachers in standard sub- jects, but with Marie Kemp and Sue Page Mc- Leod teaching piano, and Rebecca Raper teach- ing the grammar grades singing, they ought to do well in everything. Yes, I heard Louise Rice singing on the radio yesterday. I think that it's really grand that Don Keever and Fred McPherson origi- nated Asheboros own station WANC. I think that their orchestra is slightly more than won- derful. Ogburn Ferree, C. C. Cranford, and J. W. Moore still play in it, don't they? I thought so. Let's walk up town for a while. I'd like to look around a bit. Thelma's Beauty Shoppe- that couldn't be Thelma Staley, could it? Mozelle Hooker and Mary Louise Ferree work there too? It's nice that so many stayed right here, though I guess Herdy and Claudine like New York. With a swell engineer's job like Herdy's-well, New York's the place. I guess George and Graham, Slim, have those jobs under control here. Why, there's Adger Wil- liams. Why are you running around like a chicken with his head cut off? I know it takes a lot of running, being a newspaper editor, so I guess I'll let you run. Are June Dickens and Cleo Spencer still working for you, Adger? I guess that journalism class put the bug in their ear. Well, if it isn't Eagle's Dime Store and look who's assistant manager-Reba Anne Lowdermilk. Geneva Garner, are you working here too? Thats wonderful! Another beauty shoppe-George Ann's, no less. Hi, George Ann! That hair you're washing looks familiar. Whose is it? Why, hello, Lucy. How are you and Harris getting along now? That's line. Why, Sarah Foust, I didn't recognize you, work- ing there, for a minute. It's good to see you again, Evelyn Kennedy, too-how are you en- joying married life? What a cute dress shoppe! Who did you say ran it? Earlene Hammond and Mary Lee Peele. They did well in that business. Hello, Peggy. Is Miss Mitchell still doing her social work? I think you and Pete Rob- bins, with her religious education, and Mary E. Buie, with her religious sermons, are doing this town a lot of good. Here comes Richard Swing with his mail, of course. How's business, Richard? Such ambi- tion! I don't think that I'd ever have it in me. Look across the street. Edith Trogdon, still wear- ing her sweaters, and chewing gum, Ten years haven't changed her one bit, What is this coming-a kindergarten or something? Why, my goodness, it's only Faye Rose, Ilene Whitley, Barbara Wright, and Lee Pritchard with their children. It seems as if all the old crowds still haven't broken up, though I can't imagine those paratroopers wanting to live in Asheboro. And look at Hal and Iames with their kids. I have to go over to Belk's for a minute. Is Willie Lou Morgan still the head secretary here? I heard Margaret Wright and Margaret
