We 3 °r9 et Of the thirty-two boys and girls who started to school in the first grade back in the fall of 1935, only eight of them, Betty Jean Daniel, Patsy Murray, Dolores Law, Geneva Ross, Sarah Watson, Leon Bryan, Bobby Holland, and White Adams, have come all the way to be members of the class of '46. Along the way members of the class were dropped and gained until now we have eighteen seniors who will receive diplomas in May. During our first year of school we were moved to the Baptist Church while the school building was being remodeled. Our teacher that year was Mrs. J. C. McKnight. We started the second year of school in the new school building with Miss Ella Jackson as our teacher. In the third grade we were taught by Mrs. Eudora Shingler, who is now Mrs. C. E. Thrasher. In Mrs. L. R. Whatley’s class, the fourth grade, we lost Polly Mann and gained Louise Harwell. The next year we were in the fifth grade under Miss Blanche Cockrell. Betty Davison and Whit Chambliss, two of the present seniors, joined us in Miss Jane Pitts' class, the sixth grade. In the seventh grade Nellie Paramore, John Bailey, and James Haley joined our ranks. This grade was taught by Miss Mary Bennett, who later joined the Women’s Marine Corps. The next year we were introduced to the rush and hurly-burly ways of high school. Having a different teacher for every subject confused us. That year we were joined bv Lauta Averett, Clotheile Kennedy, Carolyn Lumpkin and Ray Bridges. Our home room teachers that year were Miss Marion Tharpe and Miss Mary Hall. In the ninth grade our numbers had decreased to twenty-seven. That year we gained R. C. Watson. Mrs. John D. Raines and Mrs. II. A. Miller were our home room teachers. The tenth grade was probably the grade most enjoyed by the class of ’46. That year the school entered the district meet and won honors. The Junior-Senior Prom will never be forgotten by any of us. Miss Florence Baxter, who is onr senior home room teacher, was also our home room teacher in the junior class. During our senior year, we assumed the responsibilities and privileges of being the leaders of the school. We played basketball, worked diligently on the Hal- lowe’en Carnival, and took the lead in publishing an annual, to name a few of our numerous senior activities. Our high school days are rapidly drawing to a close. We do not fear the future, but look forward to it with the hope that it will hold pleasures and achievements similar to these we have experienced during our happy school days. 32
