GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Miss Gene Dhexkl Coach Starting practice early in October long before their first game, this fighting band of Bearkitties worked long and hard to give Ashbnrn a good team. For a while this labor seemed lost but the climax showed their labor had not been in vain. The highlight of the season was the defeat of the team's most bitter rival. Syca- more, by the one-sided score of 46 to 19. This success was re- peated by another drubbing of Sycamore later in the season. Defeats by other teams were easier to accept in view of these victories. Front row: Anita Robinson, Jewell Tomlinson, Laura Sue Whittle, Dolores Law, Geneva Ross, Peggy Zorn • • • Back ww: Christine Watson, Nellie Paramore, Cynthia Scott . . . Not in picture: Jarrell Baker, Carolyn Lumpkin, Patsy Murray. 27

BOYS’ BASKETBALL We have been very proud of our basketball team since practice began in October. While there are not too many victories to celebrate, we can feel a satisfaction in the interest shown by the boys; a large number came out for practice. The sportsman- ship exhibited by the team on all occasions proved the worth of athletics in character development. We have a few victories to our credit. Sycamore, Rebecca and a tie with Vienna. The team was not made up of seniors, but contained a large number of underclassmen, so we can count on a strong basketball club next year. Mr. Sam Jones Coach b rout row: Hay Bridges. Paul Knowles, Bobby Holland, Whit Chambliss, Jimmy Luke. Hughes Sims . . . Back row: John Bailey, Everett Gamer, Mack Scott, R. L. Peacock’ R. C. Watson, Donald Padgett. 26
