ASBURIAN Editor in Chief Sn Waite Managing Editor = “a _Yones Business Manager “Won Newman a 4 b: cs te Fa ae | | | 4 i THE ROAD NOT TAKEN Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. — Robert Frost Sethe espns, : ats i Sh al Fed cre sae ey eo et saa , ” 10 15 a ePgitiingy ie aS PO AO ee co cae, 2 attra ame , elastance AR puting Om ant WR AMOR cca 0s 242 eS : : cae | PaaS “A Re BS ate wit kas EP tod as oe jy? ¢ Fe , fee Sy Hoe engl ee 3 seats FE a ae al ASBURIAN Classes ... 18 Honors ... 40 Dorms ... 94 Organizations ... 118 Academia ... 144 S Outset 2 Events ... 204 Index Ads ... 242 Epilogue ... 268 , 4 Dr. and Mrs. Alan Moulton, Charlene and Kevin Could it be that four years have passed since we sang “Getting to Know You” at the campground? Then you were strangers; we wondered about you and you didn’t understand us. But now you are friends! You have been a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness in giving us a spe- cial group to whom we belonged. When we think of all the activities we have enjoyed with you — cabinet meetings, Sophomore musical, Junior-Senior banquet, ball games, prayer meetings, class fellowships — we are thankful you made us feel a part of your class. But more than these times together, we have appreciated the sincerity, joy, friendship, devotion to Christ we have sensed in working with you. With mixed emotions we now commit you to the One who brought us together and now sends us apart — to be His Ambassadors. As we prayed before you came, now we will keep on praying that God’s how-much-more bless- ing may be yours. With appreciation for the privilege of being Ambassa- dors, Alan and Yvonne Moulton That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowl- edge of God; 8 SENIORS Colossians 1:10 . ! ) 4 i 8 3 (Men, top to bottom) Ray Smith, Chaplain; Jack Vaughn, Student Faculty; Chuck Cole, Athletic Director; Donald Newman, Treasurer; John Waite, Historian; Greg Isaacs, President. STUDENTS 39 HONORS oa VW EHO'S WHO Steve Clements 42 HONORS Ten Asbury students have their names included in the 1983 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Campus nominating committees and editors of the annual directory have included the names of these students based on their academic achieve- ment, service to the community, leadership in ex- tracurricular activities, and future potential. Towanna Anstett, a Math major from Wilmore, Kentucky, said she felt very pleased and surprised about getting elected. ‘] regard it as an honor be- cause I was chosen by the people whom I care a lot about,” she said. Her future plans include attend- ing graduate school. Polly Eason Towanna Anstett Mary Margaret Bridewell, also from Wilmore, Kentucky, has a double major in English and Span- ish. She felt that being elected to Who’s Who was a sort of reward. “I always tried to work hard at grades — and in making people important.’’ Her future includes marriage in June and graduate school. Steve Clements, from Glensville, Georgia, won- dered, ‘‘Why was I chosen?” Now he feels a sense of humbleness. He added, “The faith that has been placed in me produced a responsibility for me.” His major is History, with a double minor in Philos- ophy and Greek. His future plans include marriage and studying Classics in graduate school. Polly Eason, an elementary education major from Scranton, Iowa, said that she felt “very hon- ored excited and surprised to receive this award.” Her future plans include teaching and possibly going to the foreign mission field. Elementary education major Cindy Shoaf, from Norfolk, Virginia, said ‘‘I feel very honored that I was one of these chosen because I know that there are many others in the senior class who are highly qualified for this honor.’’ Cindy’s future plans in- clude teaching elementary school and eventually going to a Spanish-speaking country to work with missions. Randy Vandemark is from St. Johns, Michigan. He is a music education major who feels that the qualities which made him eligible for this nomina- tion were “leadership, responsibility, and meeting a lot of friends.’”’ His future plans include going to graduate school. | | | ll Nancy Grout Nancy Grout, from San Antonio, Texas, is a vo- cal performance major. Nancy said, “This is a great honor because it is a mark of distinction and holds a reputation which is nationwide.” After gradua- tion, Nancy plans to complete graduate school and acquire a degree in vocal pedagogy and music his- tory, which will enable her to teach on a university level. Accounting and Business Management major Greg Isaacs has been very involved during his four years at Asbury. Some offices he has held include Freshman Class President, Class Representative to the Student Faculty Council, Student Body Trea- surer his junior year, and his present position as Senior Class President. Greg is from Galipolis, Ohio and plans to secure a job with a major CPA firm in the future. Jon Roller, a music education major from Wil- more, Kentucky, said he was ‘‘very grateful for the support and encouragement my fellow students Greg Isaacs and teachers gave me.” He also said that this is an honor because he was elected by those whom he greatly respected. Jon’s future plans include finishing graduate school and becoming a music conductor. Beverly Sain, from Raleigh, North Carolina, has a double major in Accounting and Business Man- agement. Her class involvement has included four years of concert band, Class Cavinet, sophomore and junior years, Junior-Senior costumes director, House of Representatives of Kentucky Intercollegi- ate State Legislature, and present Student Body Treasurer. She says, “I feel very honored that stu- dents and faculty felt that I was worthy of this honor.” Cindy Shoaf Randy Vandemark HONORS 43 | | MR. 44 HONORS AND MISS ASBURIAN The Honor of Mr. and Miss Asburian is given by the senior class to two seniors who best exemplify Asbury College. Mr. and Miss Asburian are chosen because they possess the personal qualitites that Asbury strives to create. Hope Ury, an English Major from Warren, Ohio and Randy Ash, a Christian Education and Elementary Education Major from Flat Rock, Michigan, were chosen this year to represent Asbury College as Mr. and Miss Asburian. Chuck’s speech entitled, America’s-Social Murder, vividly described the crime of drunk driving. HONORS 51 52 HONORS Senior Chapel was a special time for each Ambassador. With Dr. and Mrs. Moulton looking into our faces we remembered our four years at Asbury. A highlight of Senior Chapel was the honoring of the Honorary Class Members. Dr. Victor Hamilton, Dr. Paul Vincent, Dr. Dennis Kinlaw, Dr. Clarence Hunter and Mr. Roy Lauter were all chosen by our class as honorary Ambassadors. Dr. Wm. Coker was selected as Honorary Class Graduate. Special tribute was paid to Dr. C.R. Hager for his dedicated service to Asbury College and our class. Dr. and Mrs. Moulton were honored as class advisors. The gift to the school from the senior class was broadcasting equipment to help with the installation of the new radio station. With an original arrangement of Great is Thy Faithfullness, and each senior a little teary eyed, Senior Chapel was a day of memories. NIOR CHAPEL HONORS 53 , | ' ; A a mre After four years of hard work and study Graduation Day had finally arrived for the Ambassadors. It was a pleasant day which created a sense of anticipation. Hughes Auditorium was packed with parents, friends and family waiting to see a loved one accept his diploma. The featured speaker for the Commencement Address was the Honorable Joe Frank Harris, Governor of Georgia. Greg Isaacs, the Ambassador Class President gave a summation of the class as a whole which was followed by the singing of Great Is Thy Faithfulness. As the two hundred and eighty eight graduates walked briskly from Hughes another chapter of their lives quickly closed. Yet, amongst the tears and farewells they realized that another chapter had opened. 2nd Commencement | e 34 ot VSS 2 4 es Eee ah Ge weet et ea sbur 1890 Caley 54 HONORS GRADUATION photos by Mark Kidd JUNIORS Treaaves ree sovesmenme es! 58 JUNIORS ae. oul Brian Smith and Kay Pullen, Mr. and Miss Herald. The Fellowship strives to spread the Gos- _ pel of the Lord Jesus Christ in all its activities and to _ encourage a committment to Holy living in all of its mem- bers. They seek to represent Asbury College and its princi- ples away from campus and here on campus. The SASF _ provides opportunities for fellowship, worship, sharing, _ service and evangelism for its members, and those in- terested in this work. _ The SASF is the largest group of Salvationist college stu- dents in the U.S. More Salvationists attend Asbury College _ then any other college in the country. The SASF band is _ considered one of the best Salvation Army bands. Besides the band other SASF groups include the girls choral group and timbrel players. This past year besides the weekly Salvationist meetings the SASF participated in many activities. Several concerts were held during the year. Fall quarter the SASF traveled to Paradise Valley, located: on the Kentucky-Tennessee line. Here, they held their annual SASF retreat. Both Winter and | Spring quarter they traveled to North Carolina and partici- | pated in the Azalea Festival. Besides this the group partici- | pated in the youth councils of Swoneky, chapel services and services at the U.M. church. The SASF is an integral part of Asbury’s campus and has become a highly re- spected group. SALVATION ARMY _ STUDENT FELLOWSHIP ORGANIZATIONS 125 126 ORGANIZATIONS ASBURIAN John Waite, Editor in Chief; Gail Jones, Managing Editor; Don Newman, Business Manager. “How does one even Start to put together a yearbook?” This question was asked by all of us on the 1983 Asburian staff. We were inexperienced, yet in working together we strived to pro- duce a yearbook which we could be proud of. Every Tuesday, “work night,” brought most of the staff together to type, write, organize and just have a good time. With the support of our advisors, Barb Smith and Dr. Charles Keysor, we worked endlessly to keep up and meet our deadlines. Although there was a lot of work we had many good times. Picnics, movies, parties and lots of food, helped make it all go faster. After all of this the 1983 Asbur- ian staff is proud to give to you the 1983 Asburian. Since the club was dormant the previous year, there was nothing from which to build, so it had to be started from scratch. Hopes and goals of the club were to develop fellowship and pride among the HPER majors and professors, to provide graduate school information and to promote professional- ism in health, physical education, and recreation, and to serve the student body in providing lead- ership in these areas. The club raised money fora base and from that started a newsletter, the “Fit- ness Corner” in the Collegian, scholarships for HPER club juniors, and even came one day short of having a club ski trip (it got melted out). Hager has served very capably as president for Asbury College. His 50 years in the field of education, as well as his previous experience as Asbury’s interim president, gave him the proper credentials for this position. But more than these credentials, we students have seen the love that Dr. Hager has for Asbury. His warmth and sincerity have been evidenced by his genuine smile and greetings to all he meets around campus. Dr. John Oswalt, president-elect for Asbury College, has worked with Dr. Hager over the past several months in order to make the transition period smoother. During the last week of chapels this spring quarter, Dr. Oswalt said that, as he has gotten to know Dr. Hager, he has found him to be “a large-hearted, open person ... who has genuinely served, from the president’s office, Asbury College. As students, we have been struck by his great concern for our salvation and growth in Christ. “I do not want to profess more than I am willing to live,” said Dr. Hager in his last chapel address before leaving the office of president. He is aman who truly does live as he professes, and has proven this by his love and gentle spirit towards the students, faculty, and staff of Asbury. Phillipians 3:13-14 SPORTS 175 I Ne 176 SPORTS The 1982 Eagles posted an impressive season. The schedule to be played was the roughest that Asbury soccer has ever seen. Even with the tough schedule, the Eagles posted a 7 and 9 season. Post season play was the real victory for the Eagles. “The games we lost in the season were only stepping stones and building blocks for those games we played in Our post season.” The post season consisted of the K.I.S.A. in which the Eagles took first place. They started the tournament by beating U.K. They then went on to play Northern Kentucky in K.I.S.A. soccer. The Eagles triumphed against Northern Kentucky in sudden death and won the K.I.S.A. Tournament. “I was proud of the team and the way they played this season. They were able to learn from their losses and keep their spirits high in order to do their best at the end of the season,” said Coach Zweifel. The 1982 Eagles had an oustanding squad, but it was the last season for eight of the Eagles. Ron Bradbury, Steve Kidd, Dave McKain, J.P. Rader, Steve Reyes, Danny Williams, Ed Zinn and Jimmy Zweifel were the seniors on the team. The K.I.S.A. and N.A.I.A. District 32 ALL STAR players were Steve Bodden and J.P. Rader. The Eagles also host the Wilmore 10,000 Meter run in which the team placed second. “Even though Cross Country is an individual sport, this year’s team was very close. All the team members helped push each other in order that they all might do their best.” (Bill Sietz) There were only two seniors on this a | year’s squad, Bill Sietz and Mark Purviance. eck Coach Wiggam is looking forward to next year with another strong team of returners and new runners. SPORTS 179 This was a year of transition for the 1982 Volleyball Team. Eight of the twelve girls on the team were new. But even with the team’s newness they still managed to hold their own when playing many tough teams like E.K.U., which the Eagles defeated at Berea. There was only one senior on this year’s team, Connie Williams, who has been one of the outstanding players in the past four years. With only one senior leaving the squad this year, Coach Pritchett is looking forward to next year when she can mold the team’s experience and bring next year’s Eagle’s to a winning season. 1982 Volleyball Team: Back row; Diane Myers, Julie Pate, Sharon Rodgers, Elaine Rogers, Deanna Lester, Cod Rita Pritchett. The team had a tough schedule and was unable to post as good a record as they would have liked to. It was a very cold and wet season and this made it hard for Coach Tom Harper to get his team prepared for their season. The one thing the team did produce was the “Asbury Athlete of the Year,” J.P. Rader. This was not J.P.’s greatest season but out of all the athletes on Asbury campus, he has been the most valuable sportsman that has come our way. We are proud of J.P. and Connie Williams, women’s athlete of the year, and we hope that Asbury’s sports continue to produce such fine athletes, scholars, and Christians. Darryl Collier, Ady Luyk, John Wettlaufer, Mike Mozley, Tony Mills and Dave Hoag represented Asbury at the National Christian College Athletic Association Track Championships. The highest award taken by Asbury at Nationals was fifth place in 110 high hurdles by Ady Luyk. Being your sponsors was worth all the time and effort we put into it. We ask that you will always re- member to pray for us, as we re- member to pray for you. This is a very special school, we have alot of beautiful memories. You play a large part in those memories. May God continue to bless the Contender. Class as you earnest- ly contend for the faith. We love you, Beth and Stan 206 EVENTS CONTENDERS “Do you think someone is following you?” “Did you love your mother?” ‘‘Do you have a fear of public restrooms?” All of us remember these strange questions from Freshman Orientation. But, that week holds so many more memories. The Contenders arrived on September 2cd, to a wonderful wel- come from Beth and Stan. Crazy games on the practice field, a talent show in the gym, and lots of food everywhere helped to make the freshman class feel more at home. The upperclassmen who were on campus chuckled at some of the overheard remarks; ‘‘Is this all there is to Wilmore?” ‘I'm so confused.” ‘I have to live here for a quarter?” ‘‘This food sure doesn't taste like mom's.” “I'll never learn everyone's name.” “When do we sleep around here?” ‘‘What’s an R.A.?” And of course, ‘‘How do we get to Lex?” Contenders, welcome to Asbury! cS TER FO ee a Top: Red rover, red rover, send Grover right over. ONE WITH “You might need a new God.” With this incredulous state- ment, Dr. Arnold Pra- ter opened Fall Re- vival. All of us needed a time of rebirth, re- generation, and re- dedication. As quarters wear on, studies become more tedious and wearisome. Dorm life becomes dull and routine. Even going into Lexington has become a habit. This year during Fall Revival, Dr. Prater presented a revival of restoration. He great- ly facilitated renewal. Dr. Prater’s charac- ter sketches of Old Testament figures such as Daniel and the McDaniel burgers added special insight into everyday Chris- tianity. In addition to his humor, Dr. Prater was inspiring and en- couraging He emphasized the fact that God helps even with the overwhelm- ing frustrations Of ev- eryday life. The altar calls came from a spirit of love and genuine concern for souls. Lives were Changed as many sought to be one with Christ. Let us remember the challenging words of Dr. Arnold Prater: “If God is too big to help you, then He's too big. If He’s small enough to fit into your head, then He's too small. If He’s ei- ther of these, you need a new God!”’ CHRIST LLDPE ALL ALAA LLL EOS PR People to People In order to Keep our campus aware of missions, and to intro- duce the freshmen, the Foreign Missions Council once again held the Foreign Missions Banquet. With the close of the Fall Revival, our hearts were prepared to hear of God’s work throughout the world. The banquet was held on Monday, September 20, with the main theme being ‘‘People to People.” Rev. James A. Hord was the speaker. He brought a message which gave us several new in- sights into the ‘‘world of missions.’’ The Foreign Missions Council also added special music which helped make the evening very meaningful. “Anytime you can put a thought or an idea — even just a phrase — in somebody's head, they may go around humming or singing it for the next three weeks or even years. When that happens, there’s com- munication taking place.’ This quote by Kansas’ guitarist keyboard player composer Kerry Livgreen sums up the per- formance of Steve and Annie Chapman. While building a rapport through their humor and geniality, Steve and Annie spoke directly yet sensitively about personal rela- tionships. What ministry could be more pertinent in an age plagued by high divorce rates? What could be more relevant to a society offended by selfish morality in dating? Thank you Steve and Annie for reminding us that we love only because we were first loved. This five-man contemporary sounding band performed at Asbury last year. They received raving reviews and a sincere in- vitation to come back. “Glad” is from the northern suburbs of Washington D.C. They travel year round to perform at high schools, colleges, festivals, and concert halls. Intense excitement prevailed at this year's performance. The group played selections form their new album, ‘‘Cap- tured in Time.” The sounds of “Glad” will linger and dwell in the lives of those individuals who were touched by the evening. Concerts As students and faculty prepared for the evening's pe. formance, many were filled with uncertainty. Severa! feared boredom. But, these and many others soon found that not only was the evening inspiring, it was also ex- citing. The quality of their music was exquisite. It was the music of professionals. They made their debute in Paris in 1961 and have thrilled audiences across America and Europe. They are the Bryan and Keys duo. This fall, they came to Asbury for Fall Artist Series. Keith Bryan is an American trained flutist. He was awarded the Performer’s Certificate by the Eastman School of Music. Karen Keys studied with Cecil Genhart at the Eastman School of Music, also. She, too, received the Performer’s Certificate. Performing with the duo was David Vanderkooi. He is a cellist with the Blair String Quartet. Kathy Troccoli performed in the Grill on October 18th, with Mike Warnke introducing her 45 minute concert. Kathy Troccoli, a native of Brooklyn, New York, attended Boston's Barklee School of Music for one year. After becoming a Christian in 1978, Kathy began singing at church related events and eventually opened for the group “Glad.” Her concert was a success. EVENTS 211 Crossroads Thursday, October 21 marked the eleventh annual Asbury College President's Conference weekend. During President's Conference (merged with Homecoming a few years ago), high school students visit the campus as perspective college registrants. That evening was Homecoming Coronation in which a queen was crowned. The coronation is an elaborate affair including the Presi- dent's Conference-Homecoming Banquet, the Coronation, the Homecoming Concert, and the Queen’s Reception. This year’s Homecoming Queen is senior, Polly Eason. The Home- coming Concert was performed by Larnelle Harris. This year’s Presi- dent's Conference-Homecoming theme was Crossroads. This year’s President's Conference- Homecoming Talent Show, ‘‘Seasons”’ was per- formed in the Seminary gym on Friday, October 228 There was a mixture of serious and comic performances among the different acts. The acts ranged from a visit from Santa and male ballerinas to backup by the stage band and several solos. The audience was led from sea- son to season by the comic duo of Dan and Danny; however, the hosts of the Talent Show were David Currell and Diane Nelson. The entire cast sang, ‘‘We Shall Behold Him” for the finale. Silvio and Federigo?!?! It's difficult enough to keep track of it allon paper, but when six young lovers become caught up in the masquerade of Lady Beatrice and the hilarious bumblings of Truffaldino, no one is really certain who loves whom. A TIME TO REMEMBER While most people are enjoying fall and preparing for the harvest during October, Asbury is busily preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas at Asbury is characterized by dorm parties, Angel-Mortal Week and caroling. Caroling is the highlight of the Christmas celebrations. Dorm parties are a time of sharing the love of Christ with your friends while at the same time enjoying good fellowship. Above all, Christmas at Asbury is surely a time to remember. EVENTS 217 New Year's Eve: A Knockout Winter Quarter began with a bang as the So- Cial Life Committee once again offered an excit- ing New Year’s Eve lineup. The evening began with the showing of the movie “Rocky Ill,’ starring Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire. The annual New Year’s Eve watchnight service was broadcast live over WJMM (FM 106). A New Year’s Party was held later with breakfast following in the cafeteria. Right: Syivester Stallon e portrayed Rocky Balboa. Bottom: Going off to training camp, Rocky and Adrian bid a tender farewell to their son, Rocky Jr. The 1983 Senior-Alumni Banquet was more than a success. The Ambassador Class was hon- ored by the Alumni Association by an elegant shrimp and roast beef dinner. The Alumni Board was presented and an evening of music and inspiration followed. The senior class looks forward to becoming a part of the alumni of Asbury College. This year the Foreign Missions Council chose the theme ‘‘Watchmen Awake’ with the Con- ference verse being Isaiah 62:6-7. The speaker for the 1983 Missions Conference was Mr. David Bryant, a Missions Specialist with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. The Cruse Family has emerged as a major force in Contemporary Gospel Music. Led by parents, Joe and Nan- cy Cruse, the group includes their children along with their children’s spouses and grandchildren. When every- one sings it is a rich blend of harmonies that reflects tra- ditional roots. At one time they did 320 concerts per year, they have now moved down to 200 to 225, trying to work more on songwriting and recording. Most of The Cruse Family songs are orig- inals, written by Nancy, Cin- dy, and Becky. EVENTS 221 me Woman IS Required to Pay The woman is required to pay. This is the idea behind that time- honored Asbury Tradition called TWIRP Week. It is that one week out of the year when it becomes socially acceptable fora woman to askaman out. And to pay for the date. This week of exciting surprises is high- lighted by two main events; the An- nual Valentine Banquet and Women's Open House. Women’s Open House is a special time of the year when men can visit the women of Asbury in their rooms — at least for two hours. ! This year, Valentine's Day was not only a day of romance but a day of sports and competition. As the crowd poured into the gym the air of excitement was high. The first game between the Heralds and Contenders started off the night. The Contenders played an excellent game but the Heralds prevailed and ended the game victoriously. The feature event of Spirit Day was the routine given by the cheerleaders. In between the two games the fans cheering squads combined efforts to present an enthusiastic cry of ‘Go team Go.” The second game between the Ambassadors and Victors went quickly and ended with the Ambassadors in the lead. Overall Spirit Day was a day of enthusiasm and added a lot to the entire basket- ball season. From ancient Greece to a modern drugstore, from the garden of Eden to an Asbury class- room, love has been an essential part of our lives. That was the theme of the Contender class talent show, ‘‘Always and Forever.” The script was completely written by the cast. Many of the skits were centered around songs and were humorous in nature. There were three solos featuring Liz Gerald, Heather Hinshaw, and Jake Hanselman. ‘Girl Talk’, asong written for the occasion, gossiped about famous cou- ples and slammed the Abury male. The men quickly roared their approval as King Arthur's court sang ‘‘Submission.” The first act was summed up by a rendition of ‘‘A Time and Place” from West Side Story by Beth Waters and Jake Hanselman. “Tonight,” also from West Side Story, was the chorus used for a group choreography by the entire cast to open the second act. Even the most hardened heart was touched as they saw clerk David Donaldson strive to save his girl- friend from the infamous ‘‘Babyface’”’ Nelson later in the act. Following a number by the Andrews Sisters, the 50's Gals, singing ‘‘Match- maker,’ expressed the universal longing to find that someone. The show then quickly brought us up to the present showing several scenes from Asbury life. There was the nervous feeling of asking for the first date; the agony of the empty CPO box; realizing how funny Changing TV channels can be. Beth Waters and Hal Hamilton closed the show with some se- rious thoughts on romance and the meaning of love. The Contender class was pleased with the enormous success of the 1983 Freshman Talent Show. 224 EVENTS 225 Sea a aa Wd = Pa ea} ad TT The night of Saturday, Febru- ary 19 was the culmination of months of hard work, hard prac- tice, and much prayer. The Victor class presented ‘God Has Always Had A People” by Bill and Gloria Gaither with the heart felt desire that it would touch the lives of the audience as it had their own. They believed God answered their prayers. The musical featured soloists Lisa King, Susan Millard, Lori Black, Jennifer Hubbard, Beudy- boy, Punahele, Keith Doverspike, Renee Jones, and Dave Sanders. A trio number featured Eric Grimes, Margaret Barnes, and Ruth Reitz. Debbie Owen nar- rated. Chuck Bradley and Nancy Cummings were co-directors. The tension mounted as they prayed together just before en- tering the auditorium. All the “what ifs’’ vanished with the words, ‘‘Fearnotlam with thee; | will never leave thee nor forsake thee.’’ The Lord Kept His promise. Only eternity will reveal the real results of the Sophomore musical ‘God Has Always Had A People’, but if even one indi- vidual was as blessed by the per- formance as the cast was in re- hearsing and learning it, then they would be satisfied and con- tent. EVENTS 227 — acumen verte imation tionnaire Seman Artist series Hughes Auditorium reverberated with laughter, applause, and beautiful music Sat- urday evening, February 26, as the cele- brated London Savoyards presented selec- tions from the operas of Gilbert and Sul- livan. Perhaps it was the overwhelming energy of the performers which delighted the au- dience. There was no doubt that the four singers and their pianist, Richard Balcombe, enjoyed themselves, for they effervesced a Spirit of fun as they performed. Perhaps it was the stupendous musical skill which astounded the audience. With- out the help of microphones, the musicians filled the auditorium with beautiful sounds. Whatever the reasons, their performance was well received. High points included soprano Patricia Cope and tenor Geoffrey Shovelton’s playful rendition of ‘‘Were You Not to Ko-Ko Plighted”’ from ‘‘The Mikado.”’ eae fe i i A DP ay os ee eee CEO ete ? a N N wn be Za i aa Artist Series Hughs Auditorium re- sounded with the joyful noise of the Louisville Or- chestra which performed at the Spring Artist Series. The talent of the Orches- tra was demonstrated by their magnificent perfor- mance and the Skillful direction of Conductor Robert Bernhardt. The Louisville Orchestra has been a leading musical talent for its community since 1937. It is this excel- lence that was witnessed by Asbury on Friday, March 25. Moments of Praise It was a time of celebration. An aura of worship permeated Hughes Auditorium. With their eyes on God, Silverwind conveyed the true message of Jesus’ love. They sang with their whole beings; their faces glowed, their hands were raised, and their hearts were overflowing. The evening was filled with rejoicing, singing and praising. Silverwind showed us not who they were, but who they were here for. It was truly a worship service. There were testimonies of praise as well as moments of intercessory prayer. It was a personal time of one body lifting our voice to God in praise. ‘‘God inhabits His people's praise.” The speaker for the 1982-83 Holiness Conference was Dr. Allan Coppedge. DECADES Most sophomores dream of accomplishing two things successfully: the Sophomore Musical and the Sophomore Grill Party. On April 23 the latter of these goals was realized. When the evening first began, no one was sure what would happen. Among the many things that did occur, an umbrella didn't open on cue, the light circuits blew, a main performer was missing, and the show was an hour late getting started. This sounds like it was a disaster but it was quite the opposite. The theme of the evening was ‘‘Decades,” and it was directed by Don Kosin and Lisa King. Some of the highlights were the skits, “Wizard of Ozburg” and “‘King Tut.’ Other memorable points were some excellent group songs as well as a humorous slide presentation which was narrated by Scott Busby. 232 EVENTS a SPRING PLAY — TARTUFFE On April 28, 29 and 30, Asburians traveled back into time to the old world of the King and Queen of France. To the world of Tartuffe, a world filled with love, hate, deceit and conceit. Tartuffe was a satire on religious hypocrisy by Mouliere. The acting talent presented in this year’s spring play was marvelous and beyond compare. The actors truly presented a message which we should all take time to heed. The play was direct ed by Bob Albright and assistant director was Mary Calhoun. EVENTS 233 For the past several years around the month of April, Wilmore has been converged upon by eight to ten thousand people who are attending the an- nual Christian Music Festival, Ichthus. This year was in no way an exception. However, everyone remembers which groups performed, what the weather was like, and how many people remember or even realize how many Asburians are involved either directly or indirectly with Ichthus. Students help with securitym video taping, concessions, seminars, devotionals, Bible study groups, counseling, stage crew, and numer- ous other jobs which aid in the production of this event. These two pages attempt to show that involve- ment in someway and to show appreciation to those that did help. Appreciation goes to these people for one day the King will say to them, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the king- dom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For | was hungry, and you gave me drink: | was a stranger and you took me in ... The opening scene was appealing with its generous splashes of color and constant motion. Kathy Nelson and Beng Santos were underrated as the Exotic Sideshow Girls, and the horses were something else. Inspired casting provided a Julie (Julia Wheeler) who exuded innocence and good will, and a Billy Bigelow (Dave Currell) whose brusque manner betrayed an inner conflict which led to his death. Emily Wood gave one of the better dramatic performances of the production as Mrs. Mullin. Kandy Ireland was sufficiently goofy as Kathy Pipperidge; she was full of energy and sany unrelentingly. Other cast members included Jeff Wilson as Enock Snow, Mack Covert as Jegger Craigin, Melanie Kring as Nettie Fowler; and while Martha Salazar professionally portrayed Louise Bigelow she also coordinated the choreography. “aR O LAN iete Set J2V BH AD eh dT Mer , (SERRE SRE RRA Ray Decale teR Ain enS mie HON) SENIOR RETREAT EVENTS 241 INDEX ADS AaAaAa Abery, Karen S. 201 Lafayette Ave. Suffern, NY 10901 Abery, Kenwyn ]. 201 Lafayette Ave. Suffern, NY 10901 Abner, Shirley RR 1 Box 495 Oneida, KY 40972 Acevedo, Jorge A. 204 East Main Street Wilmore, KY 40390 Achenbach, Jean E. 21 Market Street P.O.
