RANCK, Business Manager TI-IE ARLY in May of the year 1790, Bishop Francis Asbury was summoned from Maryland to attend the first Methodist Annual Conference of Kentucky. After asking God for a safe journey through the mountains, the Bishop, accompanied by escorts, set out for Kentucky by way of the Wilderness Road. w v n 1, The party made their way to Mas- terson's Station near Lexington where the first Conference took place. At this meeting Bishop Asbury projected Bethel Academy which was soon built on a high bluff near the present site of High Bridge, Kentucky. n rs Even though the Methodists of Ken- tucky endured great sacrifice to main- tain the new school, the hardships of a frontier country became too great, and Bethel Academy went out of existence about fifteen years later. ln 1890, exactly one hundred years after the founding of Bethel Academy, Asbury College came into existence. It was to perpetuate the work and noble ideals of Francis Asbury, the first bishop of the Methodist Church in America. wr rv vb rv rr WEE: 51.02 BJ .- ,AE
