«» »«a,jS IJj M :iiiiww JUL =i U illL nil FOREWORD N the year 1750 the first white man visited the Kentucky region. Eight years later Daniel Boone, with a small party, marked out the Wilderness Trail, extending from Inglis ' Ferry, in what is now West Virginia, through Cumberland Gap to the falls of the Ohio. Along this pathway, as well as down the Ohio River, following in the footsteps of these trail blazers, came hundreds of pioneers, rough, hardy, determined men and brave women, who in defending their lives, their families, and their homes from the flaming torches and bloody axes of the Indians, earned for Kentucky the title of the dark and bloody ground. It is the purpose of this book to furnish a glimpse of pioneer Kentucky by pre- senting a few of the heroic characters who moulded its history. iiiiniiiliiuifi III ' I IIUII9 mm
