Business education has an important contribution to make in the development of economic literacy of all Arvada West High School students. It provides an occupational instruc- tion program for students desiring careers in business, as well as instruction for students who plan programs requiring post-sec- ondary and higher education in the field of business. As consumers, workers and citizens, students should be able to interpret economic issues which affect them and to manage their economic affairs efficiently and wisely. Business classes help develop an economic understanding of how the business system operates and of the importance of wise consumerism. The Arvada West business department, through its classroom instruction and on-the-job training programs, is helping to devel- op students with personal, social and economic competencies. Betty Hosman Business 39 40 The 1984-1985 school year has been one of change and growth for the English department. We said fond good-byes to Mrs. Foster and Mr. Donaldson, who both transferred to Bear Creek as assistant principals; Mr. Schaaf. who transferred to the Tech Arts department; and to Mrs. Bergland and Ms. Poe who went on leave. While it was difficult to lose such outstanding people, we were fortunate to find excellent replacements so that stu- dents continued to receive superior English instruction. Without Mrs. Dengerink, Mrs. Jaworski. Mrs. Snyder, Mr. Bock and Mr. Hynes, the year could have been difficult for all; with them, the year proved to be funfilled, productive and stimulating. The department continues to offer over forty-five (45) different courses in composition, literature, language, oral communica- tions and special programs. The English curriculum is a source of pride for the nineteen (19) department members who dedi- cate themselves to making Arvada West best! English Foreign Language Judy Evans Belly Gleaton Mary Malone A boom year in Foreign Language—French, German, Latin, Russian, Spanish! Great frustration: shortages of books, class- rooms and teachers! Great satisfaction: the achievement of many students involved in a study which will enrich their individ- ual lives and may just eventually contribute to a civilized, peace- ful world! Gt Gt Humanities Jolene Knapp The Autonomous Learner Pro- gram for the Gifted and Tal- ented provides an opportunity for motivated students to dis- cover and explore areas of in- terest. The class allows the in- dependent student to create his her own program of study through self-discipline in an at- mosphere of imagination and creativity. Home Ec. Kathy Wood Beth Hays The Home Economics department at Arvada West provides students with the opportunity to gain skills that will assist the student in being successful on the job as well as in family life and independent living situations. With a rapidly changing technology that is quickly reaching the individual in his or her home, we feel that it is important for students to be aware of management skills to make the best use of resources and to gain and practice communication skills that are vital in every aspect of the human existance. Home Economics at Arvada West is much more than just ' ‘cooking and se wing'It is designed to prepare the individual to be successful in their future living environment. 46 The social studies focus on people, on the world, and on rela- tionships between the two. In brief, the social studies are those instructional courses, programs, and projects that are designed to assist students to understand, analyze, react to, and act upon: The relationships of human beings to the world in which they live. The relationships of human beings to other human beings. The relationships of human beings to themselves. Larry O'Donnell Jan Pease Jim Pierson Mike Barrows I mda Diftord Ellen Edmonds Rich Feely History Rob Blnford Lee Courkamp Dave Harris Jolene Knapp Student enrollment in math courses continues to in- crease each year. Courses offered include Math Comp., Math Level H, Algebra -Selected Topics, Algebra I, Informal Geometry, Plane Geometry, Al- gebra II, Trigonometry, Math Analysis, Calculus, Mathematics of the Financial Industry, and Statistics. This past year the Computer Programming classes were placed under the heading of Computer Science and therefore no longer count as a math credit. Math Media Center The Library Media Center is the core which provides teaming resources and accompanying services within the context of the Arvada West's curricular design. 50 Music Monte Otto Bob Zachman We believe that music should be a vital, living force in the life of every person. We provide music at Arvada West High School to contribute to the self-realization of each individual with particu- lar emphasis on his aesthetic, intellectual and social develop- ment. It is our purpose to develop musical responsiveness, under- standing, knowledge, skills, attitudes and habits in all students so that they may know the joy of both producing and consuming music. Through a creative approach to the elements of timbre, rhythm, melody, harmony and form we aim to acquaint each student with the basic structure of music so that he may continue to grow musically throughout his life. Si Art The visual arts has a most important task when educating stu- dents. It is our duty as art teachers to heighten the visual and sensory awareness. Art improves our quality of life and develops our sensitivity to become full human beings. Art forces ourselves to form inward for an answer. It helps us to explore ourselves and excersize our creative thoughts. We exer- cise our creative thoughts by learning new skills, discussing of the past, and experiencing the present. Our goals in Art to communicate, as we communicate through speech and writing, our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and dreams. -4s artist we think, feel, and project a vision of the future. Visual arts develops discriminating taste, creative potential, and an appreciation for life. Practical Arts Tom Anderson Drives Ed is a program of classroom instruction and actual on the street driving experiences. The program is designed to instruct and provide students with the knowledge, skill and attitudes necessary for sate, efficient and effective operation of a motor vehicle. Bob Drew Tom Fincken Bobbi Scheer Phys. Ed. 54 Physical Education classes are a combination of activities and are not directed to any certain grade level. Any Student may elect to take any course or combination of courses offered each quarter with the following restriction: A level I course must be completed prior to enrollment in a Level II course unless permission of the instructor is obtained. Any course may be repeated for credit with the instructor's permission. In all physical education classes, maintenance of overall fitness is a major objective. Enhancement of the mental, emotional, and social qualities of each individual through active involvement is the goal. Remember getting a shower in Unified Science when Mrs. Maruna watered the plants? Remember finding a live iguana on your desk when you came to biology? And trying to dissect a pig for two weeks without toughing it? Remember the “Slinky” that somebody else streched out of shape so it wouldn't make waves down the hall? Remember the final in chemistry: the great nylon pull? And trying not to strangle your partner with your 12 foot strand? Re- member Mr. Ward's daily rabbit feeding? We hope you also remember to question those “scientific state- ments you read in the paper and that you have a better under- standing of the living and nonliving world as a result of your Arvada West science courses. Tech. Arts Technical arts, as a part of general education, provides the oppor- tunity for students to develop active vocational and avocational interests vital to achieving success in tomorrow’s complex and promising society. A variety of courses in Auto Mechanics, Drafting, Electronics, Metal Working and Wood Working are offered to help today's student develop specialized skills, understand the place of industry in our society and pursue individual interests. Exceptional Student Programs are designed to assist students in reaching their full potential in academic, social, emotional, behavioral and vocational areas through the support and facili- tation of both regular and special education. An individualized program is implemented to meet specific needs of each individ- ual student. Instruction is provided in Language Arts, Math, History. Jean An- ouilh, hosted a cast and crew of new faces to the stage, with a sense of the sanctity of human dignity and enough honesty to produce such a difficult tragedy successfully. The first part of Sophocles trilogy entails Odeipus’ re- alization that he has killed his father and married his mother by whom he has had four children. The second part deals with Oedipus' time in exile and impending death. He gives his throne to his sons decreeing they will reign Thebes in alternate years. At the end of Eteo- cles’ rule he refuses to give up the throne to his brother Polynices the two engage in Civil War killing each other. Creon, their unde, becomes king. The third part, Antigone, be- gins with Crean’s edict that Eteocles is given a state funeral and Polyn- ices is left to rot. Antigo- ne, rebelling against the order not to bury her brother, is caught and put to death. Antigone 185 The spring musical. Carni- val was presented on May 9. 10. 11. 16. and 17. Yearbook Under the direction of co-editors Debbie Mon- toya and Tracey Kessler, this year's yearbook staff spent many hours and a great deal of effort trying to produce a cre- ative and interesting yearbook. The staff se- lected the GREATEST DA YS OF OUR LIVES as the theme in order to re- flect the high school years here at Arvada West. k Newspaper The newspaper staff, under the direction of sponsor, Linda Bellacome, and co- editors Anne Cicero and Cathi Hay, worked through- out the year to publish a quality paper. Different types of stories were printed, along with tet- ters to the editors, in an at- tempt to reach the entire student body. 189 The Arvada West Speech Team has enjoyed one ot its most successful years ever. We attended over eighteen tournaments, in- cluding National Forensic League activities. Never once was Arvada West not represented in final rounds. Over ten students reached final rounds during the year, and most of them were tro- phy winners. A. W qualified for the state tournament and placed second in our state district standings in so doing. Special achievments in- clude numerous trophy awards for Steve Wunch in Humor, multiple finalist awards and a second finish in Boy's Ex temp. Student Government is composed of highly moti- vated and responsible stu- dents from every grade that are given the opportunity to do service projects for the school and community, and to exhibit and develop lead- ership abilities. Highlighting the year was the canned food drive which surpassed last year's total by hundreds of cans. The following events were sponsored by student Gov- ernment: Homecoming, several Faculty Staff lun- cheons, Snowball dance, Sadie Hawkings dance, Prom, Paper drive, Santa Grams, Vala Grams, and of course the multi-purpose school store. This year's officers are Mark Clark, President: Steve Martinez, Student Body Vice President; Lisa Olson, Secretary: P.J. Dun- kin, Treasurer: Frank O'Donnell, Senior Class President: Holly Piester, Ju- nior Class President: Drew Wallace, Sophomore Class President. Student Government is sponsored by Mr. Jawor- owski. k Under the direction of Mr. Ashton, the Arvada West Interact Club is a school and community service or- ganization sponsored by the Arvada Rotary Club. In- teract serves at the Rotary Travelogue programs at the Arvada Center and assists with the foreign exchange students. Michelle Stokes from Harare Zimbabwe is our Rotary exchange stu- dent this year. During foot- ball season Interact contin- ues its support of the foot- ball team by selling pro- grams at the football games. Apart from all the service oriented activities the Inter- act members get together throughout the year for par- ties. and every year during winter vacation a ski trip is planned. To finish our the year, in April a few Interact mem- bers attend the Rotary Dis- trict Conference at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colora- do Springs to report on In- teract 's activities through- out the past year. In May the annual dub banquet is held to initiate the members and officers. Last year we enjoyed the dinner and play at the Heritage Square Op- era House. SI 194 Interact 196 The 1984-85 school year proved to be a very suc- cessful and productive year for HERO. One of this year's major projects was the catering business. This business is student owned and operated and has ca- tered over 30 events during the course of the year. Our business boomed and the company grossed over $10,000. Due to the suc- cess of the catering busi- ness, several students had the opportunity to attend leadership conferences that spanned from coast to coast. Conferences were held in such cities as Chica- go, Portland, and New York. As the year ended, members traveled to the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs for State Confer- ence. The Arvada West HERO Chapter dominated the conference. Members received seven gold med- als, thirteen silver, two bronze and the spirit award. Chapter president and state 1st vice president Lib- by Marks won the Out- standing State Officer Scholarship for $750. All in all, the Arvada West HERO Chapter showed once again that they are really HEROES. F.H.A X During the past year. FHA set out to do many projects and finished them all. This year's theme was “Young at Heart and we worked with the elderly. We also put on a talent show for them. We attended two district meetings-Greely and Colorado School of Mines. We attended the National Cluster meet- ing in Portland. Oregon and state convention in Colorado Springs. This year we also had social events-Halloween, Christmas, and a spring party. The social events increased membership and strengthened old friendships. We would like to thank Mrs. Bauder for all her help. She let us do our own things and we learned a lot from that. Also, thanks to Mrs. Taylor, our chapter mom, for all her support. Members-Michelle Tay- lor-President, Linda Scherer-Vice Pres.. Van Cambell In its first year, the A-West hockey team established itself as a contender in the High School Hockey League. A-West, along with the other rookie teams, Pomona and Arvada, surprised the critics with their ability to compete with established teams such as Cherry Creek and Heritage. Veteran coach, Jim Douglas, through his dedication, ted the team to a winning season capturing fourth place in the league standings behind Heritage, Littleton and Cherry Creek. The enthusiastic crowd helped inspire the players with their support. Even though the stands were packed in the first playoff game, A-West fell from a 4-1 lead to be defeated by Pomona in the third period. While the majority of the players attended Arvada West, a few at-large players from other schools also participated. One such player, defenseman Van Campbell became a favorite of the A-West fans. Goalie Jeff Grimes, also an at- large player, was able to keep the goals scored against Arvada West to a minimum with the help of the defensemen. Team Captain Jim McGovern from Arvada West, led the entire hockey league in goals scored with over 20 goals. 287 Sport Candids Sport Candidi Jteraoboo □ Q LETS FRAME IT DO-IT-YOURSELF AND CUSTOM FRAMING PHONE: 423-1658 RALSTON PLAZA SHOPPING CENTER 12367 West 64th A venue 164th and Ward Road) Office Furniture • Sales • Rental Printing Business Machines Rubber Stamps Machine Service • Rental office Supplies Calculators Telephone 421-3628 422-3767 9306 West 58th Avenue Arvada Plaza Shopping Center Arvada, Colorado 80002 Computer Supplies Arvada, Colorado 80004 HOUSE OF CARMEL Religious Goods Books BUSINESS HOURS Monday - Saturday IOOO AM - 5:30 PM Except Tuesday ’Til 9:00 PM Closed Sunday Jewelry Engraving Gold Hot Stamping What you feed your body lasts 8 hours.
