Through both participation and observation at the various sports and rallies students let spirits soar. Homecoming and the activities that accompa- ny it are some of the best sources of spirit. Sophomores, juniors and seniors cheer and yell in the stands in support of the team. Participation peaks during homecoming as the classes unite. Spirit, which plays an important part in school life, abounds at A-West. Spirit Pride Pride is an important aspect of school life at Arvada West. It is evident not only in Athletics and Aca- demics but in outside activities as well. These areas have a tendency to overlap one an- other. For example, it wouldn't be uncommon to find top athletes in an advanced math class, or in the National Honor Society. All the students at Arvada West take great pride in the school. Having pride in their school and the community, they take pride in themselves. Perserverence The desire to set goals and accomplish them, is common among the students at Arvada West. They can only achieve these goals through perserverence, which becomes especially evident at registration. Classes and grades continually present problems which can be easily solved by - using perserverence. Students aren't born with this skill but usually obtain it during their high school years. Team Work At Arvada West, examples of teamwork can be seen everywhere. Students and teachers work as one. Teachers aiding students, counselors helping students, and coaches working with athletes are all examples of teamwork at Arvada West. Without the unique bond of friendship and cooperation between the faculty and the student body teamwork wouldn't be possible. It opens the door to success in any goal, no matter how high. Brain Work Careers and colleges encompass the minds of the student body at A-West. The Warren Technical Center and Com munity College aid the students as they strive for success. They apply brainwork in whatever they do to achieve that all important A . The majority of the students are work- ing towards a future. They want to be someone someday. Camaraderie For years, peers take priority over family especially parents. Sitting together at a football game, going to lunch together, and sharing little confidences — the embodiments of friendship. Being part of the group, being accepted, support ed by them, and walking through the halls hand in hand with your special person, are all part of the camaraderie, that endures throughout the high school years. The time shared and the fear of what lies ahead are all part of the elements of the unforgetable high school relationship. Gusto . . . Before spirit and pride may evolve there must be gusto — a love for living. Students at Arvada West abound in gusto. Evidence of gusto can be found in many places. The large number of students in- volved in athletics, the vocal fans at games and the appeal of the honors programs all show signs of gusto. A-West students are willing to jump in with both feet and give a total commitment. This enthusiasm for life is just one thing that makes Arvada West students so spe- cial. 16 Introduction 18 Activities . . . In an average school day at Arvada West, stu- dents go through a sequence of activities. Par- ticipation in various sports, choirs, clubs, and musical productions become a contributing fac- tor to the school's success. Many of the students are involved in out-of- school activities such as swimming, sailing, ski- ing, horseback-riding, and rock-climbing. These out-of-school activities are valued equally to the in-school activities. They give the students a sense of relief from the every-day tension at school. uTi _____- _ Time Out At Arvada West students take time out to do many things during the day. They rush to the nearest fast-food restaraunt, visit with friends and re- lax on the front lawn, during lunch a game of frisbee in the park, lounging in the student center, or sitting in a car and listening to the radio are all favorite pastimes. Free time during lunch periods and between classes is a vital part of ev- ery students day. 20 Introduction Unique . . . Arvada West possesses a special quality. The students at AWest have the ability to be unique. Students are able to choose from a variety of courses and activities. They can decide whether to play football or tennis, whether to march in the band or sing, whether to take computer math or home ec or whether to eat in the cafeteria or go out to Taco Time. Students are not regimented here. They can wear what they like, eat where they like and choose the classes they like. Each student has the ability and the opportunity to develop as an individual and to become his her own person. 22 Introduction lntroduction 23 Parties Students at Arvada West tend to be friendly, outgoing and very active. Carla Gentry Office occupations supplies me with the abilities I will need in the business world. I do things on my own and learn from my mis- takes. I've gotten a lot out of working in a business type office and this prepares me for my future goals, to become part of the business world. B u s • i n e s s Cheryl Langer The biggest part of counseling is the emotional ups and downs of all the activities offered at A-West, counseling takes the most self-involvement, but it’s great to know that every once in a while you have helped someone so much just to be listening. Kim Liske P e e r C 0 u n s e 1 Jag alskar dig, Colorado, is Swedish for I love ya Colorado. And I do! The weather, the school and the food are all great! To be able to sun bathe in October and ski in November, is there any place else you can do that? The school spirit is just great! We don't have anything like that in Sweden. No school colors, no fight song, no homecoming, no sports teams ect, and what's worse, no year- book! To have a few classes that you can choose by yourself is another thing that makes it more interesting to go to school. Nobody is ever going to like going to school, doing homework, etc, but you sure do your best to make it fun! Pancakes for breakfast, hamburgers for lunch and dinner with des- sert everyday, I love it! And in between some brownies, donuts and chocolate chip cookies. If I look like two donuts when I leave, I think I know why. Two things that are hard to do at A-W are not having fun and being on a diet. You have to try real hard to do either of them. Maria Clllsten I'm an exchange student from Taguating-Brasisia Brasil and spon- sored by the Super Rotary Club of Arvada. I said super because I love them. I graduated from high in Brasil. My school was one of the largest private schools that we have in Brasi. The system of education there is different from here. We have six days of school instead of five. We cannot choose the subject. We have to study 10 subjects plus physical education. The schedule is alternated and we have six classes daily. The school year is from March through November with a break in July. Since our seasons are different, our summer vaca- tion is from December through February. Everything is new and different here. I enjoy the classes and the teachers have been very helpful to me. This year will be a great experience in my life. I am sure that it will bring me many pretty memories. Seniors won Homecoming We had school year-round Punk was a joke Sophomores didn't go to parties Prep was in Seniors had seniority Knickers were stupid Temp 1 was run over The snack bar was open at lunch The drug policy was strictly enforced at A-West Howard ran the snack bar You could take books from the library without being caught Everyone took off to the Great White North Colfax was just another street Nobody knew who Pac-Man was The Stones farewell tour came to Boulder Tuna came in cans and now it comes in groups High school seemed so far away . .. now it's come and gone and ... Everyone who participated in the activities had a good time. The assemblies really helped to encourage school spirit. The different days included this year were: class color day, punk rock day, and school color day. Some of the activities that students participated in were: pancake breakfast, hall decorating contest, superman contest, marshmellow eating contest, cakewalk, water balloon toss, softball game, tug-o-war, powderpuff football game, and the car-decorating contest. The homecoming football game was played against Lake- wood. The Wildcats were victorious with a score of 14-7. During half time, royalty was crowned. Teresa Guida was voted Queen and Steve Linton was voted King. Senior attendents were Sandy Tracy and Dave Rosener, Libby Watkins, and Matt Mason. The junior attendents were Jerrilyn Jelinek and All Lqurita. Joan Borgerding and Chris Wilson represented the sophomore class. The dance was held Saturday night in the student center, featuring the band Roundtree. They lost their opening game to eventual State Runner-up. Columbine, who kicked a field goal in the last few minutes to win 14-12. Arvada West then went on to post nine straight victories before bowing to Air Academy in the State Playoffs. The year's Football highlights included big wins over Pomona and Arvada to cinch the Arvada City Championship; an important victory over undefeated Wheat Ridge in the Northern Division Championship Game; defeating Lake wood in the Inter Division Playoff to win the Jeffco Championship and qualify for State; initiating a new, productive, rushing defense; being able to platoon and use so many players; tremendous Senior leadership, emphasizing together- ness, hard work and fun; a giant steak dinner sponsored by Bernards and the Arvada Kiwanis; the annual banquet featuring The Jan Pease Senior Awards; the Inseparable Helmet given to Jan by the Seniors; being the Best Defensive Team in the State: being rated 8th in the State Rankings; the Sophomores playing in the League Championship Game for the third straight year; and a highly impressive program record of 19 wins and 5 losses. Manager Scott Shoenberger Richard Dale Byrom March 28, 1955 - Nov. 22, 1981 Rich was a highly respected student athlete at Arvada West High School from 1970-73. He was a member of the 1972 State Championship football team, and was selected as an All-State defensive halfback that year. Although many colleges had doubts about his size, he was awarded an athletic scholarship to Adams State College, where he became a four-year starter and an All-Rocky Mountain Conference safety. After graduating from college. Rich became a successful businessman in the sales field. During this time, however, he missed the association with athletics and volunteered to work with the Arvada West Football program. Shortly after the 1980-81 season it was discovered that Rich had cancer. In June of this year it was expected that he would live only a week or two, but. according to his mother, he was determined to see the football team through the season. The ultimate compliment was that as a person Rich was liked by everybody and he liked everyone. He had an unusual gift for being able to relate to all kinds of people. As a coach, he was positive, enthusiastic and caring. Consequently, he contri- buted a tremendous amount to the school community. Rich was a fighter, and continued to coach when his physical condition barely allowed him the strength. His positive, never-give-up attitude gave us all a standard for handling our own difficulties. Most important. Rich showed us the value of setting priorities and that there are more important things in life than winning or losing football games. So it is those of us associated with Arvada West Football owe a debt of gratitude to the Byrom family for sharing Rich with us. Brian McGregor The Arvada West Football Team FRONT ROW. L R John Oyer. The girls' team placed well at the Denver Invitational (fifth), the Lower Division Race (third) and at the Ara- pahoe and Boulder Valley Invitationals (ninth of more than thirty teams). At the extremely competitive Jefferson County Soph- omore League Meet, the boys' team placed second and the girls' team was fourth. The volleyball team finished a strong 22-3 season with a heartbreaking three game loss to Arvada in subdistrict, which kept the Wildcats from making a third consecutive appearance at the Colorado AAA State Tournament. One week earlier Arvada West had defeated Arvada on their court to clinch second place in the league and the cham- pionship of city of Arvada. A highlight of the season was the 1st place finish at the Doherty Invitational Tournament. Each of the 5 victories was a 2 game win. Everyone on the team played well. The 1981 team distinguished itself by establishing a new record of 19 consecutive wins. The old record of 16 was set in the 1977-1978 seasons. 19 wins will be a tough mark to beat. The team had to overcome great odds after the loss of last year’s seniors and the introduction of a new coach. The team overcame the odds and advanced to a tie for second place in the league. Mary Carmody was the leading scorer with Amy Lormand a close second. The team had 12 players on the field at all times and had no stars, Everyone worked to win each game. The team was fortunate to have great depth which many times was the key to winning games. Hard work and team play paid off and took the team to state.
