Of the thirty-six original teachers, only Mr. Ashton, Mr Kramer, Mr. Rath and Mr. Passerelli remain. Cats Colorado Flag Couple Columbine Clouds Class Room In 1963 only 1,300 students attended Arvada West High School. Fifty-six courses were offered. During the first year only four students dropped out. AW now offers over 300 courses with an enrollment of 2350 students. Today Arvada West students possess greater independence than the founding students dreamed of. In 1963, all students were required to remain at school from 830-330. Loitering in the lobby was prohibited and hall passes were necessary. Any manner of dress, hair style or identifying marks which tend to call undue attention to a boy or girl will not be tol- erated. Such was the strictly enforced dress code in 1963. Students received stern discipline from the administration in 1963. The pupils were supervised before and after school and during lunch by the staff. Teachers were also required to moniter the halls during passing periods. C—-p Homecoming Illusions Hallway Home Ec. The ability to think-logically, and critically; to write in an organized manner; to read for comprehension; to speak well and listen continues to be an aim of the Ar- vada West teaching staff. Social activities filled AW's calander with Christmas fashion shows, Walt Disney movies and a Mr. Ugly contest All dances including Prom were held at the school. Interest in clubs fluctuated over the years with a beginning of 15 to an overwhelming of 35, then a decline back to the present 15 clubs. Yearbook Yawn Yell v ■' £ ' I v m. s Lr, Zodiac ARE YOU A Our zodiac signs are based on the month of birth; the Eastern zodiac (also made up of twelve signs) is based on the year. The symbols are animals, and the order is always the same: Rat (1900), Ox (1901), Tiger (1902). Rabbit (1903), Dragon (1904), Snake (1905), Horse (1906), Ram (1907), Monkey (1908), Rooster (1909), Dog (1910). and Boar (1911)1912 began the cycle again, with the year of the Rat To find your animal year, subtract a year number from 1900 to 1911 from the year you w£re born. The point is to get a remainder that can be divided by twelve. The year number you subtracted is your animal year. Let's say you were born in 1958. Subtract 1910 from 1958. You get 48, and this is divisi- ble by twelve. So your year is 1910, the year of the Dog. You're supposed to have the personality of people born under this sign of the Oriental zodiac. Another ex- ample: you were born in 1961. Subtract 1901. The answer. 60, is divisible by twelve. So you were born in the year of the Ox. by Mary Kenney ►AT PERSON ? the year of the RAT You're full of charm, but you love to gos- sip. Because of this you have many friends, but few life-long ones. You want a lot of materialistic things, and your thrifty nature will enable you to get them. You are also honest, ambitious, and full of self-control. 4.C' the year — of the RABBIT You are the luckiest of all! Success— especially financial success—is your hallmark. To most people you have an air of reserve, and they admire you for it. But to those you love, you're very affec- tionate. You're clever and you rarely lose your temper, but you're easily depressed. 4 . )! 11 O V, the year of the HORSE Horse people are always popular. You talk too much, but you always manage to say the right things! You excel at crafts of all kinds because you're quite good with your hands. You fall in love blindly— the regrets come later! ■m the year of the OX You're calm and collected, a good lis- tener and a good friend. You're also the most stubborn sign in the zodiac. You are quiet—but you're always thinking. Your biggest problems are love prob- lems-to you love is just a game. 'T % 4 the year of the TIGER You go from one extreme to another. You might be sweet and sympathetic one minute, cruel the next. You are also a rebel and an enemy of authority. Your motto is: Always put off 'til tomorrow what you can do today. of the DRAGON Dragon people are almost as stubborn as Ox people and a lot more short- tempered! But your fiery exterior belies rare sincerity and devotion. Many Dragon people don't marry—maybe because they are such worriers. the year of the SNAKE Your reputation as a serpent is based on your elusiveness— you're very fickle, especially in love. You have beauty and vanity—in equal amounts! You're also very capable and strong-willed, and you love to take charge. the year • V -1 of the RAM Ram people are very emotional and sen- sitive. Your artistic ability is such that you'll always have money and recogni- tion. Despite your talent, you're shy. You have what you need to be happy—but you must supply the motivation. n 3? -4 the year of the MONKEY Drs. Jekyll and Frankenstein must have been Monkey people. You are the mad geniuses, the scientists and inventors. You have a thirst for knowledge and are never boring. But you seem irritable toward those with less ability. You aren't —but you are sometimes insensitive. the year of the ROOSTER Though often the center of attention at gatherings, you are basically a loner You’ve been hurt and don't trust people Rooster-year people aspire toward impossible goals. Because of your confidence, though, others find you fascinating. the year u of the DOG Dog-year people are the most idealistic in the zodiac; you're scrupulously honest, very loyal, and your philosophy is: The best things in life are free. You have a dedp sense of justice and can always be trusted to keep a secret. the year of the BOAR Boar people have a kind of inner strength that no one can take away-you'll always be able to rely on yourself. You're honest, spontaneous, and well-informed about a variety of subjects. You're very courte- ous to others and always respect their rights Because many Boar people are shy, it comes as a surprise that they are very ambitious. Astrology has always served to enlarge our understanding of the world around us. In the ancient Mesopotamian world, as far back as 8000 B.C., man lived precariously beneath the open sky. His spirit was almost totally dominated by an up- per world of apparently infinite resources: thunder, light- ening, burning heat, eclipses — the heavens maintained an unpredictable barrage, spectacular and devasting beyond anything man could contrive for himself. The idea of celes- tial superiority — of looking upward for guidance — soon became a part of every-day life. Changes have occurred in recent years which promise to have a momentous effect on the progess of astrology, the new directions it can be expected to take, and the attitudes peo- ple are likely to adopt towards it Although the coming Age of Aquarius holds a new and special fascination for younger generations in search of mean- ing, astrology is for men and women of all ages and genera- tions. For astrology knows no frontiers, no age differences, and is no respecter of divisions between races or colors or creeds or generations. Astrological truths are for all of us and hold us all together in a human family. Astrology is a science and an art The mechanics of its sci- ence as well as the techniques of its art must both be under- stood if one is to become skilled in understanding and in- terpreting the influence of the heavenly bodies on mankind. But is astrology true? One must discover this for oneself. Knowing perfectly well that this cannot persuade you; that astrology works simply by telling about it and its history. To discover that astrology works today, one must join the 150th generation of practitioners.
