V AW Whiz Kids Quizzed ' seniors Kathy Blanton, Mike Piper, and Mark Karasik had the opportunity to appear on the TV show, It's Aca nic and to compete with 2 other area schools. The program is based on state-wide competition between high ools in academic matter. The team was sponsored by Larry O'Donnell, an American History teacher. Spending December at AW, Juan Carlos Fumagalli from Guatamala City, Guatamala, finds our school very different. His school year in Quatamala lasts from January to October, -but most kids go to a pri- vate school. Juan found our climate unbelievable, but enjoyed the cold and snow. Heather Davison, exchange student from Salisbury, Rhodesia, finds Rhodesia schools academically easier. In Rhodesia, all schools are segregated except the private ones. When going to public schools everyone must pay to learn, but the blacks pay less than the whites. Customs are about the same as in America, except for tea time at 4 o'clock. When Heather graduates she plans to study radiology and radiography in Cape Town. J Luis Flores Torelly, living in Puerto Aleare, visited Arvada West from January to June. Luis ranks sixth in backstroke competition in Brazil and was sponsored by a wildcat swimmer's family. 3' Ur. lIV Prom 1976 May 1 8 p. m. —12 Midnight Executive Tower Inn Flower—Lily of the Valley Colors—Emerald G Pearl Song— Feelings Band—J. After participating in the Camp of Champs summer clinic, sponsored by the National Cheerleading Association, the squad was read - to begin the challange of supporting all teams. It's a job, too, because besides thinking up new, modem cheers, keeping a smile in the worst weather or the most terrible score, they had to find energy from reserves they never knew they had before. The Pom-cats performed at all home football and basket- ball games, exhibiting many new, snappy routines. In addition to their band duties, the Pom-pons added to the excitement and spirit al- ready present at Arvada West sports events. jmdi Miryon pireK- 1ftro ®7- Re Ty3ihrtm ,;Tom- Rrouit- retfs RgtoTn Row -Kathy Hausdhild, Carrie Sengl man, TerriJiiaely., Laura ; kins, Christy Chapla, Debb p Lehl, Linda Emmons. v?'. a Gridders Have Successful Year Despite Injuries. though the A.W. football team was plagued with many injuries during the 1975 season, they were known for illing games and breathtaking conclusions. At the North Jefferson County League Tournament in early January the Wildcats estab- lished themselves as major contenders for the league title by defeating rivals Pomona and Ar- vada, thus finishing in first place. Jim Gibson, 6-10 senior, one of the state's highest scorers and rebounders, received the Most Valuable Player award for the tournament. Six-ten junior Scott Courts joined Gibson in being named to the All-tournament team. Coach Beckners' 1976 varsity team included Kent Blair, Jim Gibson, Tom Brunken, Rich Hartfield, Mike Buelter, Tom Petrie, Tom Stelmack, Scott Courts, Bill Davis, Mark Biren, and Randy Lehl. Although plagued by a frustrating season, the Wildcats developed many fundamentals that will hopefully help build them into a much stronger and improved team for the 1977 season. The Junior Varsity Squad consisted of Collin Wilson, a sophomore, and juniors Steve Reisenhauer, Joe Menchero, Aldo DelPiccolo, Randy Crane, Jim Carpenter, Mark Harris, Steve Young, Scott Rogers, Greg Antle, and Jim Chruches. Seniors Pat Burmeister and Jim Gibson, who placed 2nd in the 880, and 3rd in high jump, respectively will give the Cats ad- ded strength. Girl’s Track With only four returning letterwinners, Carla Del- Piccolo, Mary Dougherty, Rosey Eichler and Ro- chune Scroggins, this year's team looks young. But support from underclassmen may make the differ- ence and coaches Judy Temple and Virginia Mon- son, could develope this team into challengers for the league title. A busy season is expected for the girl's tennis team under Coach Kvamme, The strength this year will depend on returning players Mary Dooley, Danisa Baker, Kelli Guthrie, Vicki Mills, Kathy Evans, and Sandi Martini. One by one strange faces became friendly ones and smiles were meant for us. The days passed quickly, friendship began to bloom and love gained new meaning. As we came to know a little of each other we grew to know more of who we are and what we can be. It's hard for me to take my leave and accept that this has come to an end. But I take with me a new strength and I leave behind a part of me with each of you. As I sit here watching my friends, I look back upon our first day here. The changes that have taken place amaze me. I see strength. We have grown since the beginning; No more are we drawn back because of Fears we had then . . . Fears of rejection, Fears of revealing our true selves. The changes I see make me realize how lucky I was to be able to participate In the most important learning experience Of my life. Maybe our motto should be: We can do it; we were in Seminar. Joni Hansen Providing students with the opportunity to develop mind and skills in sport activities, the physical education de- partment made its program flexible. I Students learning from their peers has long been obvious, but a more significant observa- tion is that students learn more from teaching other students. And this is what the Every Student a Teacher program is all about; students teaching students. It provides an opportunity for students to be- come increasingly aware of their own creative talents and abilities. By reinforcing previously learned skills, stu- dents gain self-confidence in expression and assume individual leadership.
