I can’t promise you a rose garden. Promises should be kept once they are made. I can’t make one for the future because the future is unknown and so am I........tomorrow. But don’t worry about roses and tomorrow, share my warmth with me today. You can have rainbows and butterflies because today is here and so are we. Life must be lived today, you know. If you worry about tomorrow and don’t live today, suddenly you will realize that all you have are empty yesterdays. 2 8 10 and dinner made me sick. Why is so bad after all. 17 18 in the air, your work need not bfc lost; that is where they should 20 t Far Left: Senior Officers: Dee Whiteside; sec. - treas., Jack Darby; president Jerry Buelter; vice-president. The river passes us by each day and night, When the rapids come some may fall. But, there are good and bad times For us all. When did it all begin? Somehow I can't remember when. And now childhood is at its end. ‘ I think I'll follow the river. Till it joins that lake of dreams. At its end. On the river is where we all here met. And is where will meet again. Yes, We'll see each other At the rivers end. Here is were we'll pack up our dreams. And set them afloat. As we ride across in Destinies Dreamboat. They brought home both the first trophies for the District and the league as well as finishing third. Iieqjooj The Arvada West Football Team again proved to be able to play with the best teams in state. Although finishing in third place in their division, with a disappointing 7-3 record, they defeated Billy Mitchell, second in state, and fell only 7-0 to the state championship team. Wheat Ridge. Junior Rick Deforge was our only state representative and from all indications the Wildcats should have an excellent team next year. Returning standouts, Jeanette Deforge, Jan Smith, Theresea Hartman and Kim Sheets will provide the basis for a fine tennis team. As underclassmen re- ceive more experi- ence the team will become a definite state contender. 154 55 M The Volleyball Team ended their first season victoriously by beating Golden 15-7, 15-7. Their record was 7 wins and 4 losses. They finished fifth in the league. The team took second place in the Evergreen Tournament, where Donna Green was chosen M. V.P. She was also voted to the first team All-League, and Sherrie Colpitts was voted second team All-League. Volleyball 157 The Arvada West Soccer Team amassed their second winning season with a 9-2-1 record. Mike Allison, the 1 scorer is also the president of this studious group. Ed Ford - goalie, let by an average of only . 75 goals per game. The other officers of the club are Bill Sanders, v.p. and John Holmes, sec. -treas. In addition to their successful fall season they had a fine winning spring season. The Gymnastics Team finished the year with an ex- cellent 5-1 record in their tournaments. They crowned their season by placing second in the Jefferson County League. Terri Ileid, Lynda Nichols, and Cindy Pulver ably represented Arvada West at the State Meet. 161 Tm m 162 Golf Joe Putnam with Jeff Thulson, Nick Belloni, and Tom Schmucki led the team to a fifth place finish in league and district. Senior, Joe Putnam had an outstanding season placing sec- ond in state. In addition, he placed first in District and third in League. 163 AW's swimming team finished its 2nd independent season, coming through as a small but strong team. The team had no divers this year but could have easily gone unde- feated if they had. Swimmers representing the team in State competition were Carl Lindstrom, breaststroke; Rob Redic, butterfly; and the medly relay team. 16S Swimming The Arvada West wrestling team finished a very strong season with a 13-1 record and dominated the District wrestling tournament, humiliating second place Wheat Ridge by sending 10 wrestlers to state. Unfortunately only one wrestler made it to the finals Steve Bresler, finished an undefeated season by being crowned state champion at 155 pounds. The basketball team finished the year with a 6-12 record. Although dis- appointing overall, the team received outstanding performances from Sophomore Jim Gibson, and Senior Steve Nale. Underclassmen played a large part and because of the experience they received, next year's out- look seems very promising. Leading the field will be Tim Roberts, returning state champion in high hurdles, Randy Strandberg and John Hunsaker. Girl's Track Returning from last year's girl's state track competition are Donna Green, Terrie Heid, Mary Olson, Dari Wolter and Kathy Strandberg. With this year's added experience and prospects of strong support from other new team members, these girls should lead their team toward a peachy victory at the girl's state track meet this spring. 187 The CLAW staff wishes to salute those senior athletes, whose pain, sacrifice, nd effort on the practice field served to lunify a group into a team on the playing uield. As an exchange student, I am sponsored by AFS (American Field Service) International Scholarships. I came to take the senior year, live with an American family, and mainly to participate in the community life and school system. The purpose of my organization is to promote peace and rela- tionships among the people from different countries. I'm enjoying the year here, everything is new and different from the weather to the kind of food. The region in Brazil where 1 live is the south part in the state of Sao Pauls. Our weather is warm during most of the time. Our language is Portu- guese and the population is a hundred million people. We have 22 states and 4 territories, and our capital is Brasilia. Our school system is a little differ- ent. Our classes normally start in March and run through De- cember. We have winter vaca- tions in July, and summer vaca- tions from December to the be- ginning of March. Inspite of having many colleges, we still have to take general exams to get into them. Usually the exams are about physics, chem- istry, biology, mathmatics, social studies, Portuguese, Eng- lish, French, or Spanish. But some of these subjects change depending on the area that your taking, from profession to pro- fession. My town is a small one, with many farms of coffee (which is our important agricultural pro- duct) surrounding it. I am 18, and 1 have 3 sisters and two brothers, 3 older and 2 younger. I'll leave the USA in July, and I think this year will be a good one for me. Even though we become homesick, new experi- ences and responsibilities are worthwhile. It is important to know different people and un- derstand their way of life. 224 BRAZIL My name is Havord Haugan, and I am from Norway. My first big surprise when I arrived in America was the big cars and houses. The schools are different here than those in Norway, because you have to do more inde- pendent work here. The teachers are very nice and helpful, and I really like the students. American football was very confusing in the beginning, but after a while, I learned to under- stand it better. My fa- vorite food here is tacos, and my favorite sport is skiing. I also enjoy the big mountains, my fam- ily here, and the whole state of Colorado. The whole year has been a big experience for me. NOR WA Y 22 5 226 Outdoor Lab Camp is a great experience! Arvada West stu- dents go to Evergreen with sixth graders from surrounding schools to teach subjects ranging from mountain climbing to wildlife; from survival to forestry. Sometimes it is even difficult to determine who is doing the teaching? 228 230 232 As gasoline prices rose and quanti- ties diminished, many found it more economical and ecological to ride the bus or bicycles. Scandals in local and federal govern- ment-Watergate, the energy crunch, oil cutbacks, tax evasions, impeach- ment talk, and truckers strikes were only a few of the events that created student awareness in our govern- mental process. With paper shortages - especially the kind used for decorating the Senior Court - Homecoming just won't be the same. Athletes and infants across America may be greatly in- fluenced by the high cost of milk. k utu yu; Girls’ and Boys’ State was held at CSU in Fort Collins from June 11 to June 16. High school students from all over the state were put into government parties and debated political issues. Boys' State: L-R Bruce Techentien, Steve Judd, Jerry Buelter, Tim Hoops, Paul Krumm, Stuart Shepard, Bill Johnson. Girls' State: Standing, Debbie Shipley, Cindy Newton, Tanya Hamilton. 2J4 237 238 Perhaps you have seen an unknown man lurking in the hallways and be- hind trees, carrying a camera. No, the man is not an undercover officer collecting evi- dence. The mystery photographer is more commonly known as Mr. Benjamin Benham. Don't underestimate this man even though he travels in plain clothes. More than once a terror-stricken editor lias asked his aide, and he lias always come through to save the day. In a more serious vein it is with our deepest thanks that we affec- tionately dedicate this yearbook to MR. BENIAMIN BENHAM. 241 Yearbook But I like orange for the cover. It should match the inside pages! If you think making a small de- cision like that is hard, try meeting a deadline if half of your pictures are still being developed. If we can bring a girl here from Brazil, we ought to at least be able to recruit some boys from A.W. CAMPUS LIFE Man you really wouldn't believe this crazy club. We started the year with a burger bash where everyone was treated to the world's largest sundae. Other fun things included a boy-girl game of flamingo football, sponsor- ing a haunted house and dressing like a re- frigerator. The club has it's serious side dis- cussing different problems and feelings of the average teenager. Remember 7:17 pm! You can easily understand why this club is a suc- cess. CHESS CLUB Although I had some difficult matches, the most chal- lenging moments this year were trying to keep out of the $! photographers way! DEC A 1 figure it this way, what would we kids do without this fantastic club’Probably become leaders of labor unions. Seriously though, I'm really interested in leadership and marketing, which DECA helps develop. FRENCH CLUB 1 love French food, but I know I'm getting fatter by the mouthful. Too bad my vocabulary doesn't increase as rapidly as my waistline. 250 FBLA, FHA, FT A FBLA-- Man that popcorn is going like hot cakes. No wonder, because it is so delicious and it’s worth it. This really lessens the torture of selling it. FHA-- Wasn't that talent show hi- larious? I'm talking about the dis- trict HERO-FHA meeting held at our school. I must admit though, that meeting the girls from other schools was the best part. FTA-- Well I don't know about the profit, but selling those Smile for Clean Air buttons was really worth while--that is to me anyway. When you stop to think about it, it helped our environment that much more--right? GERMAN CLUB The German Club, with steins in hand, Eat franks and speak of Father Land. Those who want to join the team, Partake of eggs and shaving cream. GAA This year had to be the greatest for sportsmanship and teamwork, another example of achievement of goals through scoring them. HERO Isn't food lovely? If there's one thing 1 learn in this club, it will be how to prepare a seven course meal like this. KEY CLUB Are your interests locked in community affairs? If they are, perhaps our club holds the key . 256 LATIN CLUB Our club denies the presumption that Latin is dead . The highlight of the year was the annual Saturnalia. Everyone dressed in Roman attire for the God Saturn. LETTER ME NS CLUB Muscle men with little brains Lift weights all day to ease the strains Of heavy class work they must do And still maintain a three point two. Medical Careers I hope the next guest speaker won't need a volunteer, I’ve already given an arm and a leg. 257 NHS Community ser- vice, leadership, character, and scholastic achieve- ment! What do you have to be, Mr. Perfect, to get in the club? Of course not. I'm in the club. Our Place Soc hops, movies, by the score, Leave your two cans by the door. Come inside and join the fun, To keep you busy, these are done. 258 259 Oh, boy! Student Council tonight. Get the check list--pencil, paper, poster, Concept 6 info--it's all here. I hope every one shows up. But why shouldn't they? What else is there to do on a Monday night at 6:30? 261 2b2 264 267 I sometimes wonder what thoughts run through our teachers minds when they're by themselves: Let's see, three tests and a short lecture shouldn't be too much today. Or, It sure is nice having a private parking place, but the walk is murder! Or, A pencil makes a great pacifier, but I’ve never really cared for the-taste of wood. 270 One of the nice things about Arvada West is that it provides so many opportunities for me to learn and things to do: fixing my skis in shop, participating in a group discussion in English, taking a Fortran W. computer programming course via video- tape from CSU, or simply inter- rupting my history lesson to stare at the photographer! 271 274 Boy, do I have a problem! Three first hour classes . . . how did I ever get into this mess? Surely someone in here will help me out. I'll never be able to decide for myself whether I need Calculus or Typing II or Home Econom- ics for a career in Drafting. Wait a minute! Since when is Mrs. Jones a counselor??? Frances Colson 275 Jody Deering . 0 ' i John atty Blankenship 276 Let's see . . . Three language classes, two literature and three literature and three composition, but only one period to take English in! How will it all fit? I don't suppose Bionomics counts as an English credit, does it? 278 280 284 285 286 When I was a sophomore, I took biology and I learned about heredity, ecosystems, micro- organisms and plants. Then when I was a junior 1 took physics and I learned about energy, mo- tion, vectors and how to keep a good notebook. Now I'm a senior taking chemistry, and I still haven't learned how to blow up the world! 287 291 292 Art-it's everywhere: in the display cases, in the halls, on the gym walls, in the auditorium, on the front lawn, they've even done something to the walls of the student center! Now if tliey could only do something to the lunches in the student center....... 295 I can’t believe it! Just think, in one quarter of P. E. I learned to do 50 push-ups in a minute and a half, run 600 yards without turning blue, and hold myself in a chin-up position until my arms freeze in that position. I wonder what's in store for next quarter when we play COED softball! 297 r 298 This quarter, if I can take Wind En- semble 5th period and Jazz Ensemble 3rd, I’ll be able to fit in Male Chorus 6th period and Music Through Listen- ing 7th. Then with my Music Assist- ant class and the musical. I'll have just enough time to take my required classes (IV '2fe ni Librarians must have the most aggravating job in the world----every five minutes they have to in- terrupt their conversa- tions in the office to come out into the library and tell us to be quiet... 300 302 ------------------------------------- Today's menu: Spaghetti with Meat Balls or French Dip Sandwich, Green Beans, tossed salad, apple pie and milk. Every day I try to eat a well- balanced meal for lunch, but after three Milky Way's, a sack of potato chips and a coke in the morning, it's kind of hard. 303 306 308 We compete all our lives, with friends, and with foes, with our- selves and others, but with the greatest competitor of all.. .fate. ill We are bom, we suffer, we love, we die, but the waves continue to beat upon the rocks, the seed of time and the harvest come and go, but the earth remains.
