They prepared for the parade by working in the mornings before school. The float was worked on by interested students who came up with the idea of the Fire Olympic rings. The production was one of total involvement from the crew, actors, and the fun seeking audience, both nights who re- sponded with standing ovations for the out- standing professional efforts by the actors which has become a tradition of our theatre. The set, which was designed by senior David Deanwith assistance from junior Sylvan Ruud, was commented to be the best set ever built at Arvada West. To sum up, it was another in a long line of superior productions pre- sented by the Arvada West theatre depart- ment. Sadie Hawkins The Sadie Hawkins Turn-A-Bout Dance was February 26, 1971 in the Arvada West lobby. The dance was a fund r a i s i ng project sup- ported by A.F.S. The band was Siddartha. This was the only dance this year where the people could wear grubbies. Turn-A-Bout Dance 24 Left, Mr. Okimoto and Mr. Havens give the cast directions. A very different play here at AW was UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE. The cast, consisting of 28 people, had to work closely in order to accomplish anything. The story is about a new English teacher in a run-of-the-mill school. The situation of proper proceedures not letting Sylvia Barrett do her way of teaching is funny. It is the kind of funny that hurts. Opening night, March 26, found the cast nervous and excited. For most of the cast, this was their first ex- perience in front of the curtain. The production was under the di- rection of Mr. Larry Havens with the help of Mr. Olimoto, the stu- dent teacher. I've had just...11 shouts Sylvia to Joe Ferone, a problem student. Long preparation worth It took her eight months to get here but Ghislaine Gros finds her stay in the United States in- teresting, educational, and fun. Native to France, Ghis- laine has come to Arvada West as this year's foreign exchange student. In France, school is just for learning, she eagerly ex- plained, but here it is fan- cier. Extra-curricular activi- ties are new to her, as are home - coming, and couples holding hands in the hall. Sporting of peace symbols offered surprise to Ghislaine also. I had never seen these peace badges in France, she commented. The French newspapers, radio, and some of her teachers gave Miss Gros the information that led to action. Last June prepa- rations to come to the U. S. were already being made. Her time was being spent graduating from her own school, taking tests, writing to Paris, having physical exams, and saying good-bye to her friends. Ghislaine had to be accepted by both Paris and New York associations before she could become part of the foreign exchange program. Home to the AFS student is an Alpine village in Southeastern France called Saint Michael de Maureinne. Colorado is much like Ghislaine's France, but she thinks spruce trees are a beauti- ful difference between the two. This bright, charming girl ad- mitted that she was a bit lost at first. She was glad that the AW Wildcats were so helpful and friendly. Arvada West and A- merica are both to our guest's liking, yet Ghilsaine Gros would never make her home anywhere but France. Ghislaine Gros France while for AFS exchange students Rotary Clubs International brought CLAES LOWGRENto Arvada West. He has lived with several Arvada area families because his pro- gram is set up so that every four to six weeks he lives with a different family. Arvada West in general, he explained is much bigger than the school he attended in Sweden. His schooling be - ganwith ground school the first nine years. After com- pleting these nine years, the Swedish student has three choices: either drop out, go to a trade, or go on to the gymnasium, a type of schooling equivalent to 12th grade and two years of junior college. Claes enjoys a multiple of things with sailing, skiing and mountaineering at the top. He finds the different varieties of cereal very a- musing. Arby's Roast Beef is among his favorite in Amer- ican sandwiches along with rootbeer for his favorite soft drink. He says he is also par- tial to tacos, something not found in Sweden's cookbook. Claes alsc rates as a top sen- ior when it comes to friend- liness. He has a smile for everyone and always has time to stop and chat. The question most of the male students ask Claes is if Swe- den is really the land of free love. Claes's reply is, No way. Those who were fortunate enough to know this interest- ing and likeable person will remember his usual expres- sion, far-out! If all the other Swedes are like Claes, one might consider moving there. Claes Lowgren Sweden The Miracle Above is Anagnos and the three blind girls. Right, part of the crews. Dramatic Acting wa s at its best in the spring play THE MIRACLE WORKER. One of the hardest tasks was the Southern accent. Everyone was ready for opening night, March 19. The story of Helen Keller took a lot of real concentration to present superiorly. Their dual meet loses were to Wheatridge and Grand Junction Central. The Wildcats lost the services of Dennis Applehans and Paul Salazar; both outstanding wres- tlers, when injuries forced them out of the line-up. It is a real credit to the Wildcat wres- tling team to end the season as District Champion and place as state winners, after losing two key performers. The District Tournament produced five district champions for Arvada West: Randy Sorrentino 105 lbs., Dick Sorenson 126 lbs., Stan Murphy 132 lbs., Gary Martin 167 lbs., and HWT John Roush. In the State Tournament, Sorrentino defeated three previously undefeated wrestlers on route to his State Championship, while John Roush finished a perfect season with a 22-0 win-loss record- for first place at state. Junior Gary Martin lost a hard fought 4-3 decision in a championship match and finished 2nd, while Dick Sorensen wrestled and won three tough matches, to win 3rd place. AW Invitational Power Lift Meet-1971 Power Lifting is a relatively new activity in Colorado High Schools. Jefferson High conducted the first meet in 1968, Ranum High the second in 1969, with Arvada West sponsoring the last two in 1970 and 1971. The Wildcats finished 2nd in the first meet and have been the winners of the last three. Power lifting has proven to be a worthwhile activity at Arvada West and has offered an opportunity for many more boys to com- pete during the winter athletic season. Coach McGregor has worked with the Wild- cat lifters the past four years with much help from coaches Asbury and LaGrone. Scoring i s on the basis of four places (5, 3, 2, 1). Arvada West finished first with 56 points followed by Jefferson-8, Lincoln -6, Arvada-4, and Wheatridge-0. Best Lifter-The Best Lifter is determined by the Ravenswood formula which utalizes a co-efficient for bodyweight and total poundage lifted. The Best Lifter in this years meet was Ed Becerra of Arvada West in the 1481b. class. 1971 Arvada West Invitational Power Lift Champions. 70 Results WEIGHT BENCH CLASS PLACE NAME SCHOOL PRESS SQUAT DEAD LIFT TOTAL 123 1 2 1st Trujillo Lincoln 200 185 270 655 2nd Lambert Arvada West 155 185 280 630 3rd Perlmutter Jefferson 105 135 205 445 132 1 4 1st Dorrance Arvada West 165 210 415 790 2nd Maurer Arvada West 200 195 300 695 3rd Cain Jefferson 155 190 315 660 148 3 4 1st Becerra Arvada West 250 300 430 980 2nd Smith Arvada West 205 290 375 870 3rd Thatcher Arvada West 225 255 375 855 165 1 4 1st Kremer Arvada West 250 330 450 1030 2nd Blanchard Arvada West 250 300 425 975 3rd Pacheco Arvada West 235 300 410 945 181 3 4 1st Lammers Arvada West 275 325 450 1050 2nd Lyons Arvada West 225 275 425 950 3rd Arnold Arvada 255 285 390 930 198 1 4 1st Heinle Arvada West 225 325 500 1050 2nd Nance Jefferson 225 335 465 1025 3rd Pancoast Arvada West 225 300 465 1000 Heavy Weight 1st Roush Arvada West 315 345 535 1225 2nd Kinard Arvada West 235 350 500 1085 3rd Peterson Arvada 275 300 460 1035 New records: Dorrance Arvada West Dead Lift 415 Becerra Arvada West Bench Press 250 Heinle Arvada West Dead Lift 500 Roush Arvada West Bench Press 315 Dead Lift 535 Total 1225 We’ve got SPIRIT! These girls are primarily sophomores or girls who have not previously been in a choir. The main purpose of Girl's Cho- rus is to learn basic skills such as learn- ing to read music, learning the key- board, learning rhythms, and how to count time. Since Girl's Chorus is split into two classes, the girls had a better chance to develop their voice. Girl's Chorus is an intermediate per- form ing group. The instrumental music department, under the direction of Mr. George Dunkin, works throughout the year to provide entertainment for a vast number of people. During the fall, the band can be heard practicing early in the morning for half- time performance. The department also presents concerts throughout the year featuring the Dance band and Orchestra. Mr. Dunkin also teaches music theory. The vocal music department, under the direction of Mr. Monte Otto, includes the advanced Concert Choir, Mixed Chorus, and Girls' Chorus. Also working through this department are the Arvada West Madrigals. The vocal music de- partment is known for its fine choral presentations, blending hard work with quality. Presenting five different cultures, the AW foreign lan- guage department mixes basic skills with fun. Many classes enjoy international foods alongwith the language lab, reading comprehension tests, and pronunciation lessons. Most teachers agree that studying the culture aids in understanding the language better. The Latin and French classes use reading and comprehending litera- ture as a basic medium, where as Spanish, Russian and German rely on tapes, slides and the audio-lingual method. ' trs. Jackson and her French class take time out to relax after a tough Mrs. Vargas list-?::’ -ely to her Ed Staible, Patty Barrows and Mr. Celentano prepare for another on-the-street driving experience. Student drivers improve skills Mr, Byers prepares lesson plans while students catch up on read- ing assignment. Consisting of three levels of learning, the driver education department strives to teach students the basic skills of driv- ing through classroom learning, driving range training and on-the-street expe- rience. Students then become rounded in these concentrated areas during the eighteen week period of grading, and are better equipped to travel on the Colorado roads. Growing fast, as well as already being one of the largest departments at AW, driver education classes are in great demand. This department affords valuable training to all driving students. The world history area offers choices of study from anthropology to the study of modern man. Through the use of various lectures, films, handouts, and reading assignments, die world history team lays the groundwork for the understanding of man and his relation to his world. The American history team strives to relate the past historic events of the United States to the way the nation is shaped today. One of the more important facilities used by the team is that of the resource center. Also included as part of the social studies department are those of pyschology and economics. Testing is an important part of high school. Right: Don Gibbs, Bruce Moore, and Paul Reed work in Comp. Lab. Lower: Sophomores work hard in Composition I. English improves communication The AW English program is set up to give the stu- dents a background in lit- erature, language and composition. A variety of courses are offered with- in each of these areas. The area of literature of- fers the opportunity to read novels and short sto- ries, ranging from clas- sics to contemporary lit- erature. Language gives a background in seman- tics, mass media, read- ing, speech, and in de- velopment and structure of the English language. The composition 1 ab is useful in assisting stu- dents incomp classes and incollege prep. Full year courses are offered in creative writing, oral communications , foren- sics, theatre arts, jour- nalism, and publications. 120 Upper Left: Kathy Laughlin demon- strates acting in Theater Arts. Up- per Right: Jacque Adams works on crossword puzzle in Advanced Reading. Left: Panel discussions play a large part in Mass Media. Math and Science Mr. Ashton, Scott McGlochlin, and Jim Haggard are hard at work in Chemistry class. The inquisitive faces of Math students. courses challenge insight Taking the square root of a negative number or usingthe computer to find the area of a sphere are some of the problems students en- counter in mathematics. Gaining a mathematical background, students may later apply it to their personal lives. Subjects offered include geometry, math analysis, and algebra II trig. The use of the computer incorporates algebra II trig. and will be a course requirement in the future. Teaching students the wonders of nature and the molecular theory are a few of the goals of the AW Science program, offering sever- al levels in all classes, appeals to everyone. Dissecting pigs and frogs and examining microscopic organisms in biology, students attempt to answer questions concerning the human body and its functions. The physics department combine modern math with space age science for interested students. By mixing compounds and observing reactions in labs the students of chemistry are led to develop ideas about all concepts of matter. the living world. Chemistry students explore the molecular 1 23 world of matter. Chemistry class, hard at work. Business offers on-the Above Shorthand II class takes dicta- tion. Right Bookkeeping I students learn their debits and credits. Below Shorthand I students try to read what they have written. Job training There are opportunities in busi- ness for every student at AWHS. A student may take general busi- ness courses, or if they are seri- ously thinking of business, they may achieve on-the-job training. Courses range from those of a half year notehand class to a two year course through D.E. for on-the- job training. In between there are typing, shorthand, business law, consumer economics, as well as those of office occupations, secre- tarial practice, office machines, and bookkeeping. No matter what type of business a student wishes to develop his tal- ents, the AW business department has a course that is just right for that student. Left Office Occupations, with Mrs. White, duscuss on-the-job problems. Below Typing 1 students review their errors. The boys take a moment to learn instructions and new preparations for cooking. Variety is spice in Home Economics Delightful creative costumes and the scents of cookbook recipes are the containing activities ofhome economics for boys and girls. Some of these students will become the future home makers. Girls become deeply involved in designing new outfits to suit their taste. Tech-arts important to students Drafting students discuss new designs. Skilled hands at work Students in wood and metal shop work on independent projects. Both shop classes send exhibits to the Industrial Arts Fair. The metal shop classes chose their own projects throughout the year, but in addition they study different aspects of their vocation. Drafting classes also follow a simi- lar pattern by choosing their own pro- jects. While 55% of the student body will never make it through college, these students are developing back- ground that could be used in later life. Metal shops develops handy and useful skills. Students absorb new electronic skills. Physical Education develops fitness Nearly eighty per cent of Arvada West's stu- dent body devote at least one hour each day to their physical condition. Modem equipment, and varied programs help make phys. ed. a vital and active class. Among the activities in the girls gym classes are bowling, field hockey, gymnastics, volley- ball, modern dance, golf, track and field, ten- nis, and basketball. Football, basketball, speed ball, soccer, wres- tling, track and field, softball, and weight training, help keep the boys very active and in good physical condition. It pro- vides an insight to all areas of learning and knowledge. For con- venience, the library is open nights to Arvada West students. Students learn about current events through magazines. Students use valuable time for study in the library. Students Assist Teachers In the courses of the year, teachers ac- quire paperwork which they are not al- ways able to complete. To help them in these tasks, students are assigned to departments to do only this work. Stu- dent assistants gain valuable skills in office work. With this help, teachers are relieved of some of their time con- suming tasks. In this course, students answer phone calls, type papers, mim- eograph tests, and run errands for the teachers. In the science department, assistants also prepare materials such as chemical solutions and lab equipment while earning one half credit in science for the year. The library is used to its complete capacity. May D F Art award winners. 131 1. Dr. William D. White Principal 2. Dr. Jack Koselak, Associate Principal 1. Furman, DeLacy 2. McLellan, Gerald 3.
